The same background can be found in Akira, I remember seeing this when last resort first came out, but why and how?

Aha, my absolute favorite topic.

It seems to me that the programmers at SNK really liked Akira; there are a lot of references.

It's a little new, but there's always K9999 to think about.

Where's Shito???? :)

It is similar.

But then again how many city-scapes like that have appeared in various games and movies?

Tons

Chances are it is just coincidental, besides....AHHHHHHH!!! POWER LOSING CONTROL!!! ARGH!!!

Could you post the Akira picture for us to compare to? I never saw Akira so I don't know.
But I agree, that background in LR is still one of the finest i've seen ever.

Here's a list of every Akira allusion I could think of relating to the Neo and its games:

- In the same level of Last Resort, the boss emerges from a giant crater. The same crater is also in Akira [caused BY akira]

----------------

- The second level in last resort resembles the flooded remains of Neo Tokyo [see below]

<img src="http://www.bbakira.co.uk/stills/kaneda/kan31.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://images.webmagic.com/klov.com/screens/L/zLast_Resort.png" alt=" - " />

----------------

- KOF series and the Idea of destroying a city via a powerful satelite from space reminds one of SOL; the orbital satelite which was used to try to kill Tetsuo via laser blasts from space.

----------------

- K9999 vs Kusanagi in KOF2002; when you fight as these two, they exchange dialogue that occured between Tetsuo and Kaneda in Akira

----------------

- Read K9999's profile; it sounds EXACTLY like Tetsuo's personality. [Doesnt like authority, likes motorcycles, etc]

----------------

- K9999's SDM [see below] is a mirror if Tetsuo's loss of control.

<img src="http://www.bbakira.co.uk/stills/tetsuo/tet40.jpg" alt=" - " />

----------------

Hmmmm...I pretty much think that's it.

Excellent, thanks KA! Yes it is quite obvious I agree.

BTW, from one shooter fan to another, I'd like to play 2P with you someday. Nobody plays shooters with me as they die so fast. In Konami games, they always took my guys (ie select+A+B) and always wanted to do up, up, dn, dn, L,R,L,R,B,A,Start.

Yea, but i´ve got a question for you!

Who don´t like AKiRA??? shame

Even "Last Resort" is one of the best shoot-em-ups around!!!

And K9999, really reminds me on "Tetsuo"! Just check out his SDM- or some Moves/Animations...

good times; if you're into shooters too, check out <a href="http://www.shmups.com" target="_blank">www.shmups.com</a> and the board there; its the only other one i go to regularly.

Rip off or not, that game still rocks and the graphics are fucking well detailed for a '92 game.

Last Resort is also known as the first Neo Geo game featuring slowdown ( Thank God ! ).

I love that 1st Stage background tough. Fucking nice. buttrock buttrock

@ Kid Aphex.

K9999 'Moon' (i think) Move where he sweeps a wave around him is identical to the move Tetsuo does when he is fighting kaneda in the rubble - check it out on still frames on your dvd.

I used the stills as wallpaper on desktop for a while.

Has anyone collected the original graphic novels - They are definately worth the purchase as there is much more of a story there and some of the characters personalities were tweaked for the film.

Anyone who is reading this thread and has not watched Akira - shame on you !!! wink

Honestly, it is definately something that should be in your dvd collection.

Doesn't that mecha in Last Resort look an awful lot like a Hy-Gogg from the 0080 Gundam series?

People have seemingly not noticed also that the Last Resort ships you control are actually rip offs of Lebia Maverick's SPINNER from the SILENT MOBIUS manga and Motion Picture. When the game starts we get a good view of it coming towards us. Well go check a manga edition of Silent Mobius or the old (badly dubbed Streamline) Movie and you'll see, not only did the ppl rip off AKIRA Backgrounds, but they liked Kia Asamiya's Cyberpunk Para-Normal anime as well.

Other notables are:

Top Hunter's Mecha = Walker Machine Xabungle

Guess I wrong was.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen Akira and I didn't even notice that, nice catch.

Now I have to go play Last Resort...

One of K9999's win poses:
K9999 turns his arm into a drill, talks and follows it up with a burst of laughter.

"Kore mo...ore no chikara na no ka?!" = "Is this...also part of my power?!"
Of course even Akira found its core aesthetics elsewhere. Below is storyboard panel for Blade Runner. Amazingly, nobody on the internet has a decent pic of the city in BR, which looks exactly like Neo Tokyo, righfully so, they're both set in 2019. Anyway, anybody who likes Akira and hasn't seen Blade Runner I advise you to do so IMMEDIATELY.

Here's something that'll blow your minds away, find out who voiced K9999 and then find out who voiced Tetsuo, it'll blow your mind away.

(if that wasn't subtle enough, and your drunk or something, THEY'RE VOICED BY THE SAME GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

NAM 1975 is a direct ripoff of Apocalypse Now.
The character looks like Martin Sheen, the intro is the same and the flame thrower guy looks like Marlon Brando.

The voice of Kusanagui in Kof2002 (not Kyo, i mean the hidden kyo kusanagui) is the same voice actor as Kaneda's in Akira.

The voice of k9999 it the same as Tetsuo... go figure

The graphic novels are a great accompaniment, however you will only get the most out of them if you really get into it.

Best bet, just pick up the dvd, it should be pretty cheap and is usually available in most retailers.
