Shoto? And Various Questions

I've been playing Capcom fighting games forever and I am just now getting into SNK fighting games. I've been lurking on these forums for about a week now and I am very impressed with everyone's knowledge and dedication. Anyway, I have a few questions I hope you guys can answer (and I'm sure you can, they're not difficult).

First of all, what is a shoto? I keep hearing you guys saying that SvC:C uses shotos too much. What is a shoto?

Second, I'm going to get a KOF game for my Dreamcast really soon and my choices are between 2001 and 2002. Having never played either I would like to know which one you guys feel I should purchase. I think the strikers are cool and fun, but they can be kind of cheap. And on the other hand I like the idea of classic 3 on 3 but is it too boring without strikers? If you can't tell I'm very new to the series and was brought over because of Capcom vs SNK 1/2. Additionally, what type of replay value does 2001/2002 offer aside from the VS mode? Not that I need a ton of things to unlock to keep me playing or anything, but you must admit it's a nice incentive. I'm just not terribly sure if KOF is known for having stuff to unlock. I also heard something about a puzzle game in 2001? Is that in 2002 as well? Does it suck? And one last question: Is Rock in 2002 becuase I love that character.

Thanks in advance guys! This place is awesome.

Well, okay... Shoto is short for Shotokan, meaning the style that Ken, Ryu, Akuma, and I guess, Dan use. But really, it's about dragon punch, uppercut, hurricane kick, such that in essence, each of the three can use the same strategies.

In the KoF universe, the equivalent would be like the Kyokugenryu's (Ryo, Robert, Takuma, Yuri, and Marco), although they are much more varied than the Capcom shotos. Personally, I don't like the Kyokugen fighters much at all. Neither does Eiji Kisaragi.

If you are getting a KoF for your dreamcast, I'd recommend KoF 99 Evolution, then 2000. I don't know if 2002 is out yet, but I doubt it.

And Rock isn't playable in any KoF games yet.

Good reply, I thought that's what shoto's meant and thanks for clearing that up.

2002 comes out on the 19th of this month. I'm going to have to pass on the '99 suggestions because my friend already has that version and we've been playing it a lot recently. That's why I was thinking it might be cool to get 2k2 because 99 uses strikers and 2k2 doesn't, it would be like having both options readily available to play.

No rock, huh? That sucks. Is he a Fatal Fury character or something?

Any other suggestions from people?

Rock is a character from the latest Fatal Fury chapter, Garou: Mark of the Wolves. The problem is that MOTW occurs years in the future, so Rock is just a kid during the KOF timeline. He appears as a kid in 2002 during one of Terry's win animations, and in one of the random cartoons after the game as well.

If you've not played it, pick up the Garou: Mark of the Wolves port on Dreamcast (its called Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves if you get the US version). It can be gotten for a real low price if you look around for it on ebay or used at a Gamestop. It is DEFINITELY worth your attention man. :)

LOL This made me laugh my ass off. It's just so matter of fact. Eiji is just too bad ass. He REALLY needs to get back into KOF.

I'd go with KOF 02 when it comes but Evolution for now. It's a renamed KOF 98 with anime intro. Very cool. I also suggest both MOTW and Last Blade 2 for DC as well.

It's the only KOF that has Eiji, Eiji originated from AOF2.

Dan's style is called "Saikyo"

But anyway I just regard him as a shoto since he still has dragonpunches, hadokens and huricane kicks
