Put a few hours in on RoTD today. Thoughts....

I finally got to play some ROTD today.

I put it in the cab and planned on just testing it out and playing it for a little before I went on to finish some other projects.

I never got to the other projects.

Man, is this game *FUN*. I mean SERIOUS fun. The 45 minute learning curve with this game that everyone talks about is 100% true. I was getting my ass royally kicked for close to an hour and then suddenly.. it all made sense. I stopped before I got to fight Johann, just so I could practice my combos... which brings me to...

The combo engine in this game is insanely fun. The launch-dial-then custom system makes it really enjoyable.

I seriously have not been this impressed and drawn into a fighting game in 10+ years.

I can't get enough of it. The graphics are REALLY top-notch, impressive even for the Neo and the music is a nice change of pace from the rut the Neo fell into many years ago. What was fun and original years ago with the Neo is now old hat. RoTD breaks through that, nay... SMASHES through that.

The specials are good, as are the supers.

It's not exactly for the hard-core technical fighting fan, though. I'm sure people have found flaws in the game.

VT's opinion:

If you don't like this game, you should be banished to an existence where you clean out Christopher Reeves' urine bag every 15 minutes.

For $69 for the MVS cart, you REALLY can't go wrong!

More to come as I'm going back downstairs again for more. BUY THIS FREAKING GAME.

While not really groundbraking from a graphical point of view, you`re absolutely right - RotD is pure fun! You have to really be a hardcore hardcore fighting freak to not like it because of this and that possible flaw.

I quite like the graphics. It really looks nice.. it may not be effect laden, but they did a nice job in creating something new and original. Personally, anything to me looks better than the fire effect that is used in KOF!

Anyone who doubted Playmore/Evoga/Noise Factory either is too tied to the old way of doing things and just wants to find something wrong or just can't appreciate a good thing when they see it.

ROTD sounds like it would be up my alley. I'm not a hardcore fighting fan, i just enjoy fighters that are fun to play by myself and with a friend or two. And for $69 you really can't go wrong getting a nice shiny new mvs kit.

I agree with all. Rage is all about having fun. I have a rival who I play often and the game is on a whole new level when you are against a good human player. Variety of moves is great, the speed combos are great, the juggling is great. Dodge, offensive roll, super counters... What more do you need?

I also dig the character design moreso than pretty much any other fighter. Sad though because I seem to use Jimmy most on Matrimelee as well. lol

All that for the price of a port?? SOLD! (although I paid out the nose for the AES :)

I happen to agree. ROTD is just what the Neo needed from the it's rut of me-too fighting games that have been released as of late.

Well, I'm glad someone can derive some sort of fun from this pile of shit. God knows I can't.
amen to that. this has got to be the shittyest neo game since 'fight fever.'

this isn't a fighting game, it's a button tapping game. quick kids, can you do this: A+B, A, A, B, B, C, repeat.

the only good things i can say about it are that the graphics are flashy which was nice to see, kinda gave you hope during the development, and the fact playmore made a killing of of it. we'll be getting a real game soon thanks to the yen/dollars/peso/euros this garbage pulled in...

Took the words right out of my mouth. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but this turkey can't hold a candle to Fuun STB.

Funny, I can turn that statement around and say it about Fu'un.

That is one GIANT steaming piece of shit on a platter, to me at least.

I'm *oh so* glad I got rid of it!!

How ironic!!

I really like Fuun STB - a lot! It took me a while to warm to it, but I'm glad I gave it a second chance :)

As for RotD... bah, last time I played it I literally ripped out my AES and tossed te cart across the room in disgust. Really hate it.

ROTD is great. I consider myself a hardcore fighting fan. I always try and look for the good in things. Fact is the majority of Neo players are nitpickers and it seems they derive their fun from disecting every single bad part from any game more than actually playing it for the fun factor (not naming any names).

I agree with what you say fella, whether you're refering to me or not, I prefer games for the fun factor.

Sadly i don't have that much time to sit down and 'master' games nowadays, so I enjoy brawlers where I can learn the specials, get stuck in and maybe master one or two characters over time.

When new carts cost over $300 a pop I try to derive as much fun as possible from the carts I buy... I find it impossible with RotD :( I just feel cheated that this sort of drivel can get released.

I've never been a huge fan of tag fighters, but Fuun poo poos all over RotD. Just goes to show that SNK are still the masters :)

It's ok not to like something. I'm not saying that a person can't have a bad opinion about a game. Just a lot of people on this site make me wonder why they're even here. Look at people every year at every new release that bitch about every stage of a press release. "Wow my characters aren't included", "wow the colors suck", "the animation sucks", etc etc etc. Then they finally get it and bitch even more. I wonder if these people even tried to like it in the first place.

I see a lot of people just pop into a thread and give one liners that consist of "the game's shit" or something to the effect. People who probably don't even know how to play the game at a high level (not directing this at anybody in the thread). It must be terrible to be a pessimist. Never being satisfied. Why play games in the first place.

Beer on a Sunday afternoon.

Girlfriend is sleeping in the futon, cool summer breeze is drifting in through the window, and I'm sitting in front of my TV playing ROTD.

Big colourful sprites, a great soundtrack, and nice BG's.

I really don't give a fuck about combos or deep gameplay at the moment, I'm having fun bashing away at the computer. Abubo can be a challenge sometimes... Johann is nasty, and near unbeatable. That's challenge enough for me.

You don't like this game: that's fine, that's your opinion.

My opinion is you're missing out.

Props to VT for starting this thread.

Maybe you guys need to find some decent people to play with, because if you think you can connect with that "A+B" against a person who knows what he's doing, then you obviously must be only using the computer as your opponent.

There's a reason as to why that move is slow to come out; so you won't connect with it often.

If you don't like the game, fine, nothing I can say is going to change your mind. Which is ok with me, I can respect the fact that people have different tastes. But under certain circumstances ROTD can be a really fun game and certainly not the complete piece of garbage some make it out to be.

Being new to the neo scene RotD was one of the first games I bought for the neo. I am very happy with it. It has occupied slot 4 since I bought it. It is a nice change of pace from kof and street fighter.

Yeah I agree, RotD isn't groundbreaking, it is just a fun game to play once in a while. I must admit though, I would have been a little less impressed if I paid $300 for the home cart, but the $69 I paid for the MVS cart was MORE than worth it.. even though I had already played somebody elses cart to death a while back when I wrote a review of it.

It is also a LOT more fun in 2 player mode.

it was fun while it lastet. you learn the game in 1 or max in 2 days. its that simple. thats the reason i dont play it anymore. maybe its a fun game if you dont have shit to do and youre trippin. its really terrible for 2 player competetive play. even older kof's like 95 are better than this crap.

it just dousnt offer enough play to keep it fun for longer thatn 2 days!!

It seems like ROTD is the Marmite of fighting games.
You either love it or you hate it.

(And for all you people in the USA who don't know what Marmite is, go to www.marmite.com or here and become educated. :p )

And personally, I like ROTD.
(But I don't like Marmite).

This is sadly too true. I came to this board to talk to Neo fans. All I ever seem to hear is bashing and totally off the wall opinions. I like to talk on pros and cons of titles and the etc but the reaction here is so explosive it's just laughable. There's the hate of mainstream guys that like other games and systems than just Neo, but is this what happens to people when they never leave 16bit?
