Hey all,

Just wanted to see if anyone else had troubles with any of the KOF2K1 carts recently sold on E-bay? I purchased one about 2 weeks ago and the cart was totally corrupted when I tested it. I tried the cart in 3 different MVS motherboards, slots etc and still the same troubles. All my other carts work perfect. I sent the cart back to get another one in exchange. I just received the second cart today and I am having the same troubles. Tons of graphic glitches and sound static etc. . . There are these strange white and black lines that cross the screen. Its seems as though the graphic ROMs are bad? The person I bought the cart from says that the cart works fine on his set up? hmmmmm this is strange and I need me SOME KOF2K1 !!!! Anyway if anyone else had anything happen similar post it up :)

Why would it work on one PCB and not another?

thanks all

My cart experiences:

Some carts are tricky AND touchy. For some reason 1 Slot boards will run ANYTHING will multi boards can be less reliable. First test the voltage going to your board. I was having troubles with my 6 slot with a few games and my voltage was at 5.6 volts. Set it back to 5 volts and they worked fine. Also some multi slots have a "Sweet Spot". My slot 1 and 3 will play anything while 5, 6 are kind of picky.

Or you just have a piece of crap cart. LOL!

But seriously try each slot alone and check the voltage.

I have had several MVS carts that would only display the "checkered borad" look. I had to clean the contacts several times before it finally worked. Give that a try. You never know.

Think about it. The carts do not work O.K. on your boards, and you have only the seller's word that they work O.K. on his. If the seller knows they are selling bootleg crap, they are going to tell you whatever you want to hear in order to get you to keep it.

I have bought from him for years with out any troubles. Is he sending you another one or what is the deal? Thank you for everyone’s response to this post, but it looks like it is the inevitable crap bootleg carts of KOF2K1 arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr If anyone else has updates or thoughts about thee bootlegs please post it on up.

Hmmmmmm, I'm worried, I just won a KOF2001 cart from JU707 & am about to send payment, but now am hesitant. I emailed him though, & he said the cart is original.

It'd be really cool if you guys could keep me updated. Have you opened the carts? Are the boards SNK? Any eproms?

Thanks for the heads up guys....

Ju707 is the guy Vinh told everyone not to buy from because he was distributing those fake KOF2K1 carts on ebay... Don't you guys remember that? He knows they are boots, but they are worth a lot less now. He had them for like $400 when the game was still $860 and a bunch of people bought them and were fake.... Crap I can't find the old post with search broken, but I am sure Trieu remembers!

I remember that, I think it was in News and Rumours, but with Search not working there, it would take some time to find it.

He is sending me my third one today, but he acts like I'm making the problems up. He always says that it works great in his machine. I was one of the unfortunate people that paid close to $400 for it. I wish I would have waited and bought one from the Neo Geo store, but what can I do? I wish I could get a refund, but there is not much chance of that happening.

strider88,

open up the cart for us, take a pic of it and post it here for us.

i received an email from another member on the boards today saying that he found wires inside, non-SNK stamped boards, etc.

I have an authentic one, I see no wires in mine. Now I'm no tech, but from the production runs I've seen of KOF 2001 MVS there are no wires in them.

did I mention? The person that emailed me got it from ju707 also.

Sorry you guys have to go through this. Ask for your money back.

I do not have the cart now I sent it back the 2nd time and am now waiting for the next one, but yes I did open it up and it looked like a mess! there was wiresand also the roms (gather these are the graphic roms?) where all numbered in pencil!!! ahhhhh can you say BOOTLEG!
anyway once I get my wonderful cart #3! I will take picts!

Juliius says he is getting more on Friday and that he will be sending my new #3 cart out that day. I just hope these ones are the real deal and not more of the crappy boots.

Make sure you tell him not to send you a boot back or you will be asking for cart #4 soon. You paid good money, and unless he said in his auction it was a bootleg, you are not getting what you paid for.

Umm sorry to break the news here but Video Connections and MD Game Sales both sell boots too. In fact Video Connections seems to only sell boots while MD Games sells both.

No Shifty, Video Connection does not sell only bootlegs (unless you mean of KOF2K1, that I do not know)... I have delt with them for years and never had any problems... plus, if they think something is a boot they will tell you, or open it up and look. They don't try to rip you off with fake merchandise...

Recently they had an Andro Dunos cart for sale, I asked if it was a boot, they said they would check. Kelly opened it and saw SNK boards, but didn't know about EPROMs or the like and thought it was real. She sent it out, I saw it was a boot and she quickly took it back and apologized for the mix up. They are a great company and a good Neo seller.

So they do sell boots. There is nothing wrong with it as long as they tell you or you are smart enough to ask. Both companies are great, I never said they were not. All I am saying is they DO sell bootlegs. I bought a Viewpoint $85(Boot), and a Prehistoric Isle $175(Boot) from Video Connections and neither one worked right. I did get a full refund. I thought the main point was companies that you can buy games from and not have to worry about getting a Bootleg from... maybe I misunderstood

it's funny that vinh told me about this post, i recently purchased a kof 2001 mvs cart from julius on ebay, he is selling bootleg copies of the game without informing you, when i first popped the cart in right away you could see the glitches.
after you finally get it to work, a lot of different things will happen during gameplay, such as sound going out, the screen freezing up, and so on, i opened the cart and there is no snk board, most of the chips are made in tawain, and there are wires sticking out that just shouldn't be there.
i emailed him and told him the situation, he told me he would be more than glad to refund me, so hopefully that will happen, i just don't count on it till i see the cash in my hands, but buyer beware on this one just because the man has great feedback on ebay doesn't make him an honest seller .

i figured if the kof 2k1 carts are boots then the metal slug 4 are too, why else would the man sell them so cheap, he will also tell you he buys direct from a dealer in japan, i would rather save my cash for an original

Well, sadly... Bootlegs have become a real problem and I don't think that most retailers are ready or know how to deal with it. Unless they are a member here and know what is going on, they are probably out of the loop. None of them mean to rip anyone off, it is just sometimes hard to know what you are selling, and to open every cart when you sell so many. Sorry to hear you have had less then good luck with VC, they have been great to me.

The bad sound and tons of glitches is undoubtedly a boot. But even the best copies of 2K1 (ie Neo store AES) seem to have a rare instance of corruption involving a thin, vertical line that flashes for an instant about 2/3 of a screen from the right corner in some stages (usually Brazil). This occurs maybe 5x per hour of play. Everything else in the game is absolutely perfect.

I've been meaning to take a screenshot... I wasn't going to complain or anything because I've seen the same problem in combo videos with otherwise perfect graphics. Sound familiar anyone?

Well I don't have KOF2K1 yet, but I am willing to bet that this is screen flicker like seen in Metal Slug 3 (for example the Ostrich slug level). Basicly the Neo is having trouble keeping up and these artifacts can be seen on the screen as flickering lines or other tiny glitches. I am willing to bet that this is normal and is just a product of a 13+ year old video game system still trying to pump out high quality games in 2002 :)
