I think its a good game, but like others said the backgrounds leave something to be desired. The detail just isn't there. Quality took a backseat to gameplay. SNK did a better job. Hopefully they will improve.

Man, the text wouldn't fit here!

Nah, rather be a pain!

Kof2001 is cool, but there are better ones.

Isn't there a KoF forum here for KoF-related discussions?

I thought the backgrounds reached a new low in KoF 2000. In KoF 2001, the bar was lowered even more. Even the best backgrounds in KoF 2k1 (USA, Mexico, Italy), are average compared to KoF 2K.

Even the selection of characters seems to be lacking. Hinako and Xiang Fei are still there, with Jhun and Kasumi nowhere to be found.

Surprisingly, in light of all of these shortfalls, KoF 2k1 still comes out on top for its few positives. Gameplay is awesome, thanks to the flexible number of characters that can be used in a team (no doubt Playmore playing follow the leader of Capcom in Capcom Vs. SNK 2). The wire attack seems cool, though I have no idea how it's done or how to do it properly. Heidern's re-appearance as a command character makes the game, along with Angel's circle attack variation on follow-up moves.

Overall, a pleasant surprise.

Well... it's quite dark for my taste. Maybe is the music that make the game somehow "not fun". I mean, KOF is supposed to be a worldwide event... but the feeling is that it's not. Kof'98 make you feel a real "tournament" feeling. In fact, since 99 all KOF are quite "undergroud". I rather prefer the worldwide event that kof96-98 were.

BTW... 98 have the best soundtrack of them all (All songs arranged and NOT the same as said in many reviews) and... have you discovered the SECRET songs? You must play a VS game and do the following:

Japan's song of original KOF'94:
The first player of someone must be Kyo Kusangui in his 94/95 version. Press start while selecting him to pick his 94/95 version(GREAT song!! My all time favourite KOF song, followed by Japan team standard song of KOF98).

England song of original KOF'94:
One team must be formed by Mai, King and Yuri (Like england original team)

Orochi Yashiro/Orochi Shermie/Orochi Chris:
The first member must be one of the alter-ego of yashiro, chris or shermie(Use START while selecting them). Three different songs here (I love Yashiro's and Shermie's).

Kyo Kusanagui 97 song/NEW song for IORI:
Kyo must face Iori (Note: The new song for Iori is different from the one that sounds when Iori is the first member of his team. If the first member is Mature or Vice you will hear Iori 96 song)

KOF 2K1 is awesome, especially in versus. Stop whining and be thankful that there is a KOF 2K1.

KOF2001 is a great game. Maybe the backgrounds art can be improved, but the amount of characters and the gameplay make it very fun to play. I don't think that many people expected such a fine game before it was released.

I don't think that the stages are dark, they're too bright IMO.

The one that I called 'dark' is the stages from KoF2000.

The Art Work on the selection screen is dreadful!
They should be punished for drawing such ugly portrait. And the stages lack the SNK flair as well. I just hope 2002 will be better.

i m probably the only one who has this opinion.
but i dont like the option to select how many
characters, i dont like how i basically have to
pick 1-2 characters to at least be competitive
with the bosses.
its neat when you do the cancels with the supers
if you have one player only but eh.
i also dont think the tiers are totally even.
its just not really possible.
but thats my opinion on that part.
other than that, i hate the game.
i m not gonna bog down this thread but i think
its the worst kof out of all of them.

I think its ok one of the better ones, i wish though like motw on the intro to level screens they had extra footage than just a small square of part of the back ground.

Ok so to make a long history short:

Sux0r: Backgrounds, music and artwork

Rox0r: GAMEPLAY and the new characters

Overall, it's a GREAT fighter; Even the most hardcore KOF'98 players would admit that...

I think it's a pretty damn good game... Not as good as '97 or '98 but definitly vying for third place in the series.

The backgrounds are well animated, and altho the colour pallette is a little drab, it kinda reminds of some of the backgrounds from KoF '94, and that's OK with me.

The backgrounds are definitly better than KoF 2000, and most of them are better than KoF '99 too. :)

I DIDNT LIKE THE BACKGROUNDS. ESPECIALLY THE ONE WITH THE TWO GUYS HEAD BANGING. I LOVE KOF2001, BUT I ADMIT I WAS LET DOWN BY THE QUALITY OF THE BACKGROUNDS AND THE THE JAPANESE INSERT. IMO A IT WAS CRUCIAL BLOW DELIVERED TO THE NEO BY THE NEWCOMERS TO THE KOF SERIES.
