Well I said I would build these in May and heres one of them. I haven't wired it yet but thats gonna happen in the next couple of days. Can't wait to play on them. I know the button config. is different than what most hard core SNK and Capcom players like but my wrists are tore up and I needed something that wouldnt stress them out to much. Over all this project was a learning experience as far as what materials to use and where & what to buy. I would say stay away from using MDF board if you plan to do any drilling, sanding, or shaping without a power sander cuz it frays easily. Also shop around for the cable because I bought a 30 dollar cable at Best Buy and found one later for 8 bucks. :( Oh well, they turned out ok for a first attempt. Next time, if there is a next time, they should turn out perfect. Anyway enjoy.

That really looks top notch construction. If you were to make them for other systems, I'd buy one.

Looks good, Mr. Wizard. Building joysticks is like eating potato chips, one is never enough. :)

Thanks!

Did you have to sac an existing controller for use with your nova?

Are you saying did I use the guts from one of my nova joysticks? If so, no I bought all the guts from Happ Controlls, Best Buy, and Ace hardware. So I now have 4 joysticks so I can play all my 4 player games with four friends. :)

If I decide to build another pair down the road I'll probably lower them a half inch to 3/4 a inch. :)

What material did you use for the body. it looks as sturdy as hell. I like the rounded adges to.
how much time and $ did you have to put into each stick?

Thats the kicker of this project. I had originally projected around 60 dollars a stick but I think I came out to around 85 a stick. Reason being was the cost of the cables and that I bought some of the nuts, screws, etc. in excess of what was needed. It was all trial and error. I think that if I do it again it will cost right at 60 or even less. Here is a price list in a rounded form for two sticks.

2 Joysticks and 16 buttons: $60 shipped.

MDF fiber board: $12 for 1 sheet. ( I had enough left over to make a third controller.)

Cables: $60 (found some later for $8 a piece :( )

Paint: 5 cans $25

Glue, screws, nuts & bolts, cable retainers, wire, solder, terminals, sandpaper: well that depends on what you already have.

I recommend hard wood as I've learned it is easier to shape without fraying. And it doesnt crack as easy if its fresh wood. But these are sturdy and weigh about 15 pounds each. :)

I think we should have an "Elite" stick builders forum. ;)

Absolutely awesome!!!
Very nice finished!!

But very high! Why not to make one veeeeeeery thin, like oldschool arcade Neo ones? With that form it will be the very best of home made sticks!

Keep on working man!
