Long backstory. Prepare thyselves...
I first knew about the Neo-Geo back in late 1991, when there was an advertisement for it in Gamepro. I didn't get to experience the true power of Neo-Geo until August 1992, when I saw Fatal Fury and Sengoku at an arcade in Delaware. Before May 1993, my only experience with Neo-Geo games was through ports of Fatal Fury 2, Art of Fighting, and World Heroes for the Super NES. In May 1993, I saw World Heroes and Fatal Fury 2 in their full glory on an MVS system at a nearby arcade (I would also see Samurai Shodown in December 1993 and Art of Fighting 2 in August 1994 at that same arcade). But I didn't really get into Neo-Geo until June 4th, 1995, when I saw the King of Fighters '94 at a nearby arcade. As I took a gander at that game, I was amazaed by the number of characters that were in that game from other games (Fatal Fury, AoF, etc.). The graphics and music blew away anything I had ever played before. Right then and there, I knew that I wanted to get a Neo-Geo. Sadly, the large price tag held me back. From then on, I didn't make much contact with anything else Neo-Geo related (except in December 1998, when I saw The King of Fighters '98 at an arcade in Disney-MGM studios).
In December 2000, I got Capcom vs SNK for a Christmas present. As I played it, I instantly recognized many of the characters (Kyo, Benimaru, Terry, Ryo, etc.) from the King of FIghters series, and soon, a wave of resurgance hit me. I wanted to know more about the King of Fighters, and in April of this year, I bought KOF: Dream Match 1999 and KOF: Evolution for the Dreamcast. But that wasn't enough; I wanted to know more about the King of Fighters series when I stopped following it in 1995. So I visited a King of Fighters website, got the whole backstory, and now wanted to play the previous years even more badly than ever. Thanks to a modded Playstation, I was able to play import copies of King of Fighters 96 & 97 (95 was released domestically, so I didn't need a modchip for that).
To this day, I still don't own a Neo-Geo AES system. But one day, when I finally rack up the available funds (and find a place that doesn't sell shoddy home carts *cough* *cough* Neo-Geo Freak *cough* *cough*), I, too, will be able to partake in the Neo-Geo experience.
