Who is Romstar?Did they make good games?
Do/did you like them as a company?
What did they have to do with SNK?

I don't know anything about Romstar.
Can someone please explain who Romstar is?

I got this 1 slot Marquee today.
It has Romstar in the right top corner..Rather big.
Did they make cabs?or Games?

I guess they had to be something important to SNK to have their name on a Marquee.

I think it was a name Capcom used to publish under.

Basically I know about them because my father is OBSESSED with this NES game called Thunder & Lightning made by...ROMSTAR.

Romstar was their own company I believe though I could be wrong. They were just basically an arcade publisher/distributor who did dabble in consoles a little bit, but not much. I don't think they are around anymore. Most companies like Capcom, Konami, SNK, Taito etc. opened up their own American branch offices rather than deal with third parties. Fabtek was another company that operated like Romstar. I think they're both long out of business (died with arcades I'd imagine.)

Nightmare Tony used to work for them. I asked him about a manual for an MVS board that I got that was issued my Romstar, and this was his reply.

Yes, the manual is to the very old 1 slot PCB. Near the end of Romstar's life in Socal, we made a licensing deal with SNK and sold around 8,000 1 slots. That is why you will find some 1 slots with the Romstar serial number sticker. Romstar had some controlloing interest by both Capcom and Taito, but it actually descended from SNK USA.

Tradewest=Ikari Warriors.

Time Soldiers was licensed to Romstar by SNK/Alpha Denshi I believe.

You can look at individual games here: Killer List of Video Games

Romstar released a game on their own called Sky Soldiers, an overhead two-player cooperative shooter where you fly around through time dog-fighting with other planes and such.

They also worked with Technos for the arcade release of Double Dragon II .

Lastly, to my knowledge, they worked with SNK only on Time Soldiers . SNK and Alpha's collaboration was Gang Wars .

Sky Soldiers, Time Soldiers and Gang Wars were all made by Alpha Denshi on SNK hardware. SS and TS were released in the US by Romstar.

Wow, that's quite something. I didn't know Capcom and Taito had controlling interested in Romstar. It would be interesting to read a little "history of" type thing if any exists on them. They were quite a big deal in the North American arcade market for quite some time...

Don't forget Sky Adventure, though it actually has SNK on it.

My Time Soldiers Cab has Romstar on the Marquee.

It's interesting to note that Romstar had a hand in Caliber 50 (which was one of my favorite Ikari clones)
