Forgive me, but which KOF to get?

So I'm in the market for a King of Fighters. The neostore seems to claim that 2001 is the one to get, but then there's 2002 staring me in the face. Which is truly better? I played the heck out of '99 on Dreamcast, but now I'm hungry to have a real AES cart on the shelf, but I can't afford more than one. Again, forgive me if this conversation is as old as dirt here, as I'm rather new.

O well. I have not played KOF’02 yet but ’01, so I cannot tell between these two, however for what I have seen (videos, reviews etc) I will take ’02.

But before these two I will get KOF ’00, a great game and it can be found new at www.therage.com for 175 USD which is a very good price in my opinion.

Even more I will get KOF 96 or 98, both can be bought for quite cheap, especially KOF 96 and you will be able to feel the true KOF essence.

Personally I will get KOF 96 the first, because it is the cheaper one and I like it a lot, probably is my favourite, with grate music, characters, game play and graphics.

Let me be the first to say 98, as it is sweet and cheap. If you have the cash however go with 2k2

if you are already a very good player : KOF 2001 (endless depth)

if your gameplay is improving : KOF 2000 (good for start training with combos)

if you are a beginer : KOF 2002

if you are looking for graphics and backgrounds : KOF 2002 or 98

.
.
.
.
.
.

I would say, go for whether 2002 or 2001 since the others already have cheaper ports for other systems (DC and PS2, if you need more details about them, feel free to ask). however, 2001 already has a DC port and the PS2 vrsion is coming soon (in May I think) so 2002 would be the better choice. but if you are not interested in the ports, I would go with 2001 if I were you (my personal favorite)

I agree with Pep and say '96 or '98. You can always pick up the more recent ones later on down the line when they're cheaper.

If you want an order to get KOF's in then for the top stuff in the series, I have to say get the following:

KOF98, KOF2k, KOF2k2, KOF96

KOF96 and 98 (which is pretty much the best in the series BTW) will give you the old school SNK KOF feel.

2k and 2k2 are IMHO the pinical of the Nests series and are excellent games that break off from the more traditional feel that KOF has for its classic part of the series (94-98).

Of course if you're a nut like me you have to own them all! wink

Peace

KoF 98 ($110) + KoF 96 ($75) + KoF 97 ($90)

or...

1 brand new KoF 2002?

I'd get the three above games instead.

KoF 2001 I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It sucks.

start with 98 or 97 or 96

And indeed, at the end you will feel the urge to own them all :)

I've always liked the series, but I've never been a terribly rabid fan. The thing that got me going on 01 and 02 was K999 as I'm a huge fan of Akira. The fact that they got the original voice actor for Tetsuo to do his voice is just too much. I've heard a lot of praise for the voices in 01, so are all those same voices still present in 02? That would be the main selling feature for me, plus, I think 02 would probably best suit my skill level. I was raised in the Capcom camp, so I have a bit of practice needed before I come to grips with SNK fighters.

i m a huge AKIRA fan but nothing could justify owning
01 for me.
i keep on telling myself i ll get it again to
complete the collection.
i find it very hard to believe anyone likes this game really.
people are adamant that its all about gameplay.
this arguement to me is shit.
because every kof before this had amazing looks story and play.
and if you followed what others said it would only have
one of those points.

02 has both Tetsuo (K9999) and Kaneda (as Kusanagi)...

Something to consider.

If you are going to break into a series do it properly and get going with '94. It's quite cheap these days and has a lot of SNK universe about it.

'95 is also relatively cheap, in fact you could probably pocket them both without putting much of a dent at all in your wallet.

Both these games will get you started good and proper into the series, and of course they lead straight into '96, which was the year the series really exploded and became a hundred times more awesome. This is also quite affordable.

So you can get 3 great games and progress further into the series in good chronological order, appreciating the changes along the way, or you can jump about like a frog. The other benefit to putting off the later releases for the moment is this:

The pre-98 games are really not going to fall too much further in price. '98 & '99 are dropping in value but both are still $100+ games. 2000~2002 will cost you a tidy sum, so if you get them last, they will have dropped in price nicely by then, or at least logic and history say so.

I wish I could recommend people into 94, but it just doesn't float for newbies. I think 96 is as far back as I can get people.

But yeah. 94 is great.

J!
well whey hey.
94 i think is greatness.
94 is always great to play.
but the simplicity kinda scares away alot of people.
but whatever.

quite honestly i think any kof has its perks of having.
even the great dreammatch with out a story is
super tight play wise.

listen to this man kid.
he knows his stuff.

but anyways. i would reccomend 96 just as my personal
favorite. it doesnt have the chain combos thats been
in all the kofs since 97 but it has some nasty things otherwise.
96= super story super style and super play.

You can't go wrong with 96. 2k2 isn't anything spectacular.

And there you have it.

Seriously, '94 and '95 are deceptively simple. Both games actually offer much more than meets the eye. They are King of Fighters games after all and gameplay has been the mainstay since its inception.

All it really takes is time to experiment and a fairly creative mind. Then you will see why even the earlier games are amazing. It's true that from '96 onwards there is a lot of "out of the box" amazingness, in that you can be half brain-dead and still wow at the game, however even way back in the mid-90's the games had quite a bit to offer.

Much like Ragnagard, if you sit down with 94/95, log in some good play time and have an inventive mind when it comes to gameplay, you will get to like them a LOT and will hold them in very high regard, seeing what was possible in them so early on in the history of serious fighters. Even if you are less serious about it all I daresay you will still find much enjoyment in them. They both have the pick up and get right into it without having to study instructions element as well, which our dear Shin Oh Ken lacks, making them generally very inviting.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll go for '96 to start. Then I can progress onward and eventually go back and play the originals and probably appreciate them more. Still '96 isn't cheap at all. It costs more for an english cart in the neostore than it does for '01. I do have one more question though. Is the story presented in english even on a Japanese cart? See, I have the debug chip in my system and it turns everything to Japanese, so it wouldn't be much fun to have a story I can't read. Does anyone know a way to have blood AND english text?

Buy a jpn kof '96. Don't worry, there is a place in the option menu to change the language.

96 is a good choice. It's my favorite, and not just because of the gameplay. Just love the ambient feel of the game-- both sound & background. I think 96 is the "harder" (not saying much, compared to 95) of the 96-98 KOFs though.

Get KoF97. Its pretty cheap, and a heck of alot better than the Saturn version.

In many ways I think KoF97 is the best KoF ever. The story was awesome, great character selection, and an incredibly cool end battle!

King of Fighters '96 { 1 }
Item # 217 near mint insert, good cartridge & manual.
$259.00

thats a poor example.
another more realistic example is mint 95s going
for 150-160 us
when a jp cart of 95 can run about anywhere under 100.
welcome to the world of NEOGEO.
good luck anyways.
and talk to NEOBomberman,
he might be able to find you one at a good price

$40 '94
$55 '95
$60+ '96

The above are prices not hard to get for said games. Just ask me :p

I would recommend '97 the most if you had to have only one, but that's another thing altogether. Don't get '97 first because the storyline will make less sense than the flaming around here.

If you have the debug chip in your system you can set the game to play uncensored and in English. Just have to flip that dipswitch! Then play around in the options.
