OK FTL, insults aside, I'll break down your supposed features of Slug 4.
Monkey transformations? Ok, kinda fun. Would've been a hell of a lot cooler had it been something NEW though, and not a reheated sprite from Slug 3.
Multiple paths? Was done a hell of a lot better in Slug 3, where we got actual NEW areas, instead
of rehashing the ice stage and zombie stages from Slugs X and 3. No points for something that ONCE AGAIN, was done better in a previous installment.
Sidecar and truck stages...simply a less interesting reworking of the helicopter/harrier shooting scenes seen in X and 3. Boring.
More variety...um, this is very vague. I recall every single level (except perhaps the very first ultra-sparsely drawn city stage) being a chunk of a level from an older Slug game.
Multiple endings...I'll give you this just to be sporting, since I've only played through the entire game once, so I wouldn't know.
New weapons...um, the only "new" weapon I can recall was the double machine gun, which obviously didn't take an extraordinary burst of programming genius to create.

All the other "new" vehicles in the game (missile tank, forklift, armored truck) appeared, ONCE AGAIN, in OTHER SLUG GAMES.
New characters...I think this is moot, since all the characters play EXACTLY alike. This is room for this series to grow, if each character had his/her own set of weapons, kinda like Contra Hardcorps for the Genesis. But nope, same characters, different sprites...I'll take Eri and Fio over Trevor and Nadia anyday.
I'd also like to talk about the bosses, which are absolutely indefensible. From the lame "blimp underbelly" of stage one, to the Giant Tuna Can Section boss of stage two, to the really wack-looking robo-clown head...these are truly uninspired designs. These really pale when compared to the massive Morden tank in X, or the cool monolith-spewing Alien egg in 3.
You want real analysis, you got it FTL. Now warm up that English dictionary and quit writing shit that sounds like it was spoken by Hanz and Franz.

You made really a good improvement ,managing to explain your views without insults.
Again, your depreciating all the cool features of Slug 4 due to your biased attitude.
If you try to play the game and do it MANY times like I did,you will see the game is really funny, delivering to you:
action
variety
challenge
Add the new system of medals and ranking as well.
Neo geo lives on thanks to Metal slug 4,you ADMIT that your friend had fun playing it.
So,if EXPERTS like you are so negative towards the neo geo, well,I'm all for the newbies,I'm a super newbies.
YOU FORGOT the real point: the ability to be amazed and appreciate new funny games.
Play it without all your mental intricacies, and a smile will appear on your face.
Sorry for my typos,I write quickly and got a lot of things to do in the same time .
