Four months ago I got back into the Neo scene after five years thanks to the purchase of SS2 I loved the game and recently also managed to get a copy of SS1.

Now the question is I have these two games Jap AES and would like to complete the series but cannot as yet afford the fourth instalement

So with SS3 being relatively cheap is it worth paying the cash for it or would I just make myself a collector with a game on my shelf i'm not going to play which would seeem a waste in my opinion? :(

I used to hate SS3, until I gave it a chance. In reality now, I feel it is an EXCELLENT game, with very austere, atmospheric backgrounds, large characters with great animation, and a pretty high (but fair) difficulty level. I'd say it is DEFINITELY worth it, especially at the reasonable price the home cart goes for.

On a side note, SS4 seems to have fallen a lot in price lately. I got mine from Nikke for $239 plus shipping, not too long ago (JPN copy, cheaper than the U.S. one). :)

SS3 is the best of the series and definitely worth the effort. The only 2 groups that flame it are the scrubs and the ppl who own the PSX version. :p

The CPU is sooo cheaply blocking every special move it renders them completely useless. Kinda reminds me of AoF 2 ... no fun ...

Yes, yes! No random openings here, a lot of the game is just finding a way through your opponent's defenses. Once this is accomplished, you can kill anyone, even with just a few openings in a round, or 1 opening when you are in the red. The round is never over early... this is the game where the samurais are made, 2 and 4 are so forgiving that it's hard to get excited until the end of the final round.

SS3 has good gameplay but the game just cant compete against SS4. I do however like this game despite how much people say it sucks.

Its not the best in the series but its worthy of purchase.

It's my least favorite of the four, but it's still a good game. Best graphics of the four (great backgrounds), but the gameplay is a bit messed. I mean, attacks take off too much, and it's not as crisp as ss4. I think it's much better than people say it is, and I'm ONLY talking about the AES version. The ports sucked!

i love that game, it's my second favorite in the series, next to SS4. The graphics are a ton better 1 and 2. The gameplay is good too, the people who say it's hard are just bad at the game ;) the only downside i can think of is the lack of characters, they took out jubei who is my favorite character of the series

This and KoF 96 are what got me into the Neo Geo, so I'd say it's worth it.

I like the way you can parry enemy attacks - it makes fights interesting and somewhat strategic. The music and graphics are also well done (especially Rimururu's stage).

Go for it!

its DAMN good, its just that the A.I. is a little sloppy and the damage ratio is through the roof. it is basicaly the sam sho which you would play in A more defensive style(similar to bushido blade). I like to think of it as the sam sho for experinced players. plus the graffics are the best in the series.

That game isn´t really bad. Even not AoF II...
But if we compare Part III with Part IV and II, it´s a little bit strange, or let me say different. But don´t call me a liar...There are lots of other games *WH-Series, DDragon, Ninja Master and others* on Neo which really suckzzz.
So SS3 isn´t a bad choice IMO.

SS3 is a good game. I don't know what kyokugen star is talking about the cpu defending... you really just have to be looking for a more precise time to do your supers. I like how the button combination for your supers pops when your gauge is at max. Nice backrounds.

The only gripe about this game is that it is unbalanced.

Samurai Spirits - Zanluro Musouken is just pure magic.

It has the best grephic, music and atmosphere of the whole series.

As for gameplay, well is sequel is a big upgrade, yet I must say the 3 has a particual fell of 'mist of death' which make it someway unique.

Anyway, it's just a MUST!

SS3 is a great game... not without its fair share of problems, but I hold it in much higher regard than I do SS4 (which I rather detest). The control is smooth as silk, the animation is great and the aesthetic is absolutely beyond reproach. I wouldn't really suggest forking over more than $200 for it, but other than that, go for it.

SS4 was a joke. Washed out color palettes, screwed up combo engine, reduced color depth on backgrounds, movelist butchery and FRAME CUTS (try comparing SS3 and SS4 Genjuro or Basara). Where the hell did those extra megs go? Off into the ether, because they sure as hell weren't showing up onscreen. Less animation, worse control, a piss-poor aesthetic and a general sense of "good enough for who it's for" adds up to the worst $300 I ever spent. -_-

SS3 is also my favourite SamSho. Unbalanced? Damage ratio through the rooth? Not at all, only if a player acts stupidly and catches a hard blow with his pants down. And btw: Even SS2 supports blows that take 3/4 or more of the life gauge. The graphics, the music, the gameplay, the char design, everything fits together. A masterpiece.

An excellent title, and highly underrated (though not by the look of most of these posts ;) ). My only gripe in SS3 is the air blocking.

Shodown 3 is a trip, only topped by Shodown 2 in my eyes. It's WAY funner than Shodown 4 and it absolutely destroys every other game in the series both graphics and audio wise. A quick rundown:

PROS

Awesome character additions. Basara is a freak, Shizu has a kickass design, Rimu and Gaira are kinda weak but 2/4 ain't bad.

Graphics are amazing. The backgrounds are some of the best ever seen on the Neo.

The sounds, and ESPESCIALLY the music are outstanding. Set the mood perfectly.

Introduced the Bust/Slash system, which is way cool.

It's the dark Shodown. No bright colors to be found within these walls. Unless blood is a color...

CONS

They took out many of the great characters, leaving much to be desired come time to select your character.

Seems alot of the game was half-assed and rushed. Many times you won't even get a victory animation, the game will just sit there for a few seconds then switch the the speech screen.

Text endinds suck.

Alot of the heart from Shodown 2 is missing in this one (game was developed by different people).

The only thing that really gets to me is the felling of a rushed product while playing. This game could have been grand if it was simply polished up a bit. But, like I said, it is the second best Shodown in the series for me. I actually like Shodown 4 the least, the only real thing it has on the other games is the character selection (which is grand. Talk about an awesome cast of characters). Let's just hope the next Shodown looks and sounds like Shodown 3, plays and polished like Shodown 2 and has a cast including every Samurai to ever grace the game.

Now go poke your eye out!

Don't let the post count fool you. This guy Deuce has been into SS for a long time. His opinion is worth listening to.

Not just because I agree with everything he said.

Except the price to get it for. It can be obtained for $70. There are plenty of guys to do this for you. Nikke, Jyosui, or any guy in Asia can find it for cheap and pass some savings to you. It's not rare.
