I'm just curious why most Neo Geo games have selectable languages Japanese, English, Spanish and Portuguese. When I saw the MVS arcades in Spanish years ago here in Spain I found it quite amazing, but then I learned the choice languages were only that 4, so for instance in France they couln't choose French.
Anwyay the Spanish translation is awful, usually the just translate each word literally so snetences are totally funny.
Why that 4 languages and igore French, German, Italian, etc... ?

El mercado en español de la Neo Geo es más amplio de lo que parece: no sólo por España sino sobre todo por Mexico y otros paises sudamericanos.

Spanish and Portuguese are mainly for the Central/ South American markets....where arcades are still quite popular.

The spanish Translation seems funny to you because it's mainly translated with the Mexican market in mind. Spanish in spain and Spanish in Mexico Are not the same Some of the Pronounciations and meanings are different. Have you ever heard Mexicans speak spanish? it's a lingo of Language all to it's own. Although people from mexico and Spain can understand each other perfectly Spanish from Mexico Maintains a constant state of Flux Due to the many Native and indigina poupulation. Neo-geo is Very big in Mexico and Arcade owners are always happy to have MVS machines due to the demand of the KOF series which offers challenge and lots of peso Revenue.

Thanks

I agree with this and what ocsmod posted.

Amano Jacu: Could you give examples of dodgy translations.

Those selectable languages are quite justified.
Bear In mind that the SouthAmerica Entirely speaks Spanish & Portuguese, back in time, 1400/1500 era, The Portuguese and Spanish ships were conquering the world, This is why they're all Latin guys. SNK is still very popular on the arcades on Europe, but since it lacks french and german, I really don't know why. Only French and german citizens can say if their local arcade places are well supporting the Neo Geo MVS market.

Yes, Spainsh translations are very funny!!
You have to know that some words doesn't mean the same in South american Spanish and Spanish from Spain. For example "Cojer", people from Spain will understant "to catch", and people from south america will understand "to fuck". It's really funny, but in some circumstances will cause you a serious trouble :D

"Lei tus movimientos como un libro de gramatico" Goro Daimon KOF'96 (don't remember the year exactly). XD Goro seems really stupid saying this.

I don't remember any other wining quotes (I'm at the University now). Don't panic, I'll start remembering some funny translations later! :D
