There were about 2+ million people pre-ordering Final Fantasy 8. Granted its less than $100.

Also 90% of PS2 first shipment were pre-ordered (and they were sold out too. The rest was reserved for in-store selling), and it cost more than 300 at that time.

note: the 90% figure maybe inaccurate but I think it should be some where around there, at least 80%.
