I am wondering if X-RGB Plus is a good option for connecting NEO GEO, Genesis and SNES consoles. Since these are low-res machines, will the video look pixelated on a high-res PC monitor?

You should have posted this in the tech forum...
I'd like to know too but I haven't tried it...my assumption is that the XRGB2+PCmonitor yields a very good picture, much better than S-Video, but not as good as a 15KHz arcade monitor... probably you'll get a pixellated, rom-like effect...

Search the tech forum, there is quite a bit on this subject.

If your only going to use 16bit consoles I'd go with the XRGB-2. The Plus is basically the same with component connection and separate audio output. A bit more expensive too At least that's what my own research led me to believe...

I own the XRGB-2. It get's you pretty close to arcade quality. You have to enable scan lines to get rid of the high res induced pixelation. The downside of this is thin black vertical lines on the screen. IMO it's very close to good arcade cabinets and better than old, worn out ones.

Furthermore, because it uses RGB output, colour is arcade perfect.

If you get it for a good price, I got mine for about $100, you'll be in NEO-GEO Heaven

Yes it will be pixelated. I had bought a VGA box for consoles, I knew it would be pixelated, but I never thought it would be so ugly. It's simple, VGA monitors are the best picture quality out there, but it only supports HIGH-Res, so anything that uses low and mid-res will grow on a VGA monitor and big pixels will be noticed.

Arcade monitors have better picture than VGA moitors my ass! I've the best Neocandy cab and some other excellent arcade monitors, but nothing can match the picture of a 0.22/21/20 dot pitch PC monitor, and PC monitors have also true flatscreens ( Hitachi being the best manufacturer with Iiyama ) wich helps keeping away the reflections of light and keeps color very bright.

I.E. : if you play a rom in a full screen mode, you will notice the graphics pixelated, but if you play the rom in a windowed mode, you won't notice any pixels oversized because you'll be running the true res of the rom. And then, you can apreciate the true quality of a pc Monitor, unless you have a shitty model.

It's obvious that a VGA monitor is in itself better than a low res monitor... I don't think anybody ever denied this simple truth (certainly not me)...The question was how to get the best picture out of a low res device, like an arcade board (not Naomi and such of course!)...and a VGA monitor is not the best solution...unless pixels the size of a finger are your idea of "best"...

Great idea! Let's make the picture the size of a stamp and those nasty pixels will go away...

Ahh, this is a good one! the best of the day...

The XRGB-2 allows scan lines? Do you have the one made by Micomsoft? Where is the best place to get one? Thanks for the replies.

Size of a stamp if your monitor have the size of a nail! if you bring down the res to 640x480x16, You can play confortably a rom windowed using the 320x240x16 Resolution.

Man, that's the part where roms suck. Consoles are made to play on High screens. If you're a romster, just get an Nvidia based card with Svideo-out, you won't be dissapointed.

It's very important to note that the XRGB-2 output is NOT ugly. Yes, I've seen crappy VGA boxes too. This falls under the get what you pay for rule.

The output from the XRGB-2 using RGB cables and a nice monitor is awesome. Turning on scanlines is key, and the XRGB-2 Plus also gives the user multiple scanline choices.

In terms of comparing the XRGB-2 with the XRGB-2 Plus... I don't remember all the differences, but the newer one adds component input support and enhanced audio inputs. It also has more color/gamma tweaks and the ability to adjust the scanlines (think scanline density or something). If you MUST use the VGA passthrough capability to hook up both your PC and the consoles, the older one takes the cake. I don't recall any signal degradation with the older one, but the newer one definitely does.

The XRGB-2 is pretty darn nice.

I use it to play vertical shmups on my Sigma Raijin and Sega Saturn (I've got a PlayStation RGB cable on backorder, so there's another one soon). The XRGB-2 is connected to a PC monitor flipped on its side.

RayForce (Galactic Attack), Raiden Fighters 2, and Grid Seeker: Project Storm Hammer appear in arcade quality on this thing as long as scanlines are on.

You don't want to use the A/V to VGA connection. That causes a major hit on the signal. This thing was made for RGB to VGA and nothing but that, in my opinion. I have not tried using the S-Video to VGA connection on it, however.

I was talking about the Micomsoft XRGB-2. I got mine from Yahoo! Japan auction. Try ebay or post in the wanted forum. If you've got the cash you could get a new one ["plus" version anyway] from NCS.

Anyone else got better ideas for US residing XRGB-2 hunters?
