The presence of aliens in MS2 and beyond was and is a complete turn-off to me..
I feel that Metal Slug was a great start to a "dark" lil war series game that got sillier and meaningless with every sequel..just another shooter IMO after the 1st.
Did MS4 get back to the Roots?? Are there more human bosses in the game like that crazed gunman ,SGT KICK ASS(?)
Did they attempt to do too much?? I am not one for a whole lot of complexity all over the screen...
Thankyou-BB

I agree with you here... no more aliens!
The first one was so cool, with that 2nd world war scenario...

My god, you people must hate new things!

The aliens are so cool. The way they die is insane and the whole flying into the spaceship at the end of 3 is just freaking incredible.

Slug 4 looks like it goes back to the same old soldier formula. Hmmmmm....how much of the same thing can you guys ingest before you get bored!

I loved MS2 until the aliens came in. What pissed me off about MSX was that the aliens arrive faster! Then in MS3 you're killing mostly crabs, flies, and mutated animals for the first level... Really a bad progression. No wonder MS1 is worth so much - it was the best int eh series.

We only got one Metal Slug game out of the four that is strictly military in theme. We have not had a chance to tire of it yet.

Metal Slug is such a good game, the aliens or nothing for that matter could take away from it. It's so much fun. But I do agree that the darker 2nd World War fits it better.

I think this one has more to do with killer robots/androids than aliens and crabs.

I think there are still zombies though.

Crabs, little wiggly aliens and flying things were a huge let down for me... I felt like I was shrunk down and was running through a hookers pubic hair with a machine gun trying to kill off all the STD's

What took the cake for me was..eating the food and instantly gaining weight as you blast the "bad guys"..that was funny but dumb and stole some of that "dark edge" immediately..
Adding UTFO's and Aliens is soooo unimaginative and cheap...
I am sooooo sick of the "space age"
How about having the boyz and ladies travel back in time to previous war periods in our history...
How about battling natives in the jungle and blasting wild animals away...Sure it's not politically correct but "it's just a game"
In MS2 I hated fighting side by side with guys I blasted away through each level...in order to defeat the "aliens"
Damn..
Again..interchanging main characters and adding aliens, zombies and all sorts of silly enemies is soooo cheap! Blasting these same ole creatures is meaningless..Why are the aliens and zombies attacking?? where did they come from?
Damn they screwed up after the 1st installment!

well,
i see the majority of people disagree with me

bummer

i find the "serious" mood of slug 1 very BORING

blame SNK for adding aliens and crabs

after all,
Nazca only made the first chapter

Warning: Contains a SPOILER.

Aliens? We've got plenty of 'em in Metal Slug 2/X and 3. If you've seen 3's final battle, it is apparent that their ass has been kicked once and for all.

Killer robots and androids would be OK for MS4. The alien thing is fine for 2/X and 3, but 4 needs to start a fresh thread of the MS series.

Tsk tsk.

Slug 3 is THE BEST. Stop kidding yourselves. Branching paths (can you say REPLAY!), freaks, aliens...and ZOMBIES!
I seriously thought the zombie level was the coolest thing ever. The way that level starts out with the freaky plane crash background...the friggin amazing Blood Spew attack!!! The first time I saw that I almost fell out of my chair.

Slug 3 also OWNS all the other titles in the series musically...I think Stage 4 (blazing metal tunes with a Middle-Eastern touch) might be my fave music track of any Neo game yet.

If you want hardcore military, pick up Shock Troopers. You can't think of Slug as a straight Contra clone...given all the platforming and crazy lush backgrounds, I tend to think it owes a giant debt to the Ghouls N' Ghosts series...especially with the hand to hand stuff and strange character metamorphoses (getting fat, zombified, just like Arthur turning into a baby or an old man.)

Slug 3 owns! And you won't get ass-raped by Kyokugen Star trying to buy it!!!

Personally I like all those out of context stages. Zombie stage, mummies or new gameply styles like the subs in slug 3. Plus those animations for those little aliens dudes totally ROCK! Not to mention all the Zombie animations...... they are so sweet! I can't wait to ride in the side car in slug 4. I think if the series stayed with all army like content and no new gameplay twists it would have gotten a little stale? I have to agree with Loopz I love the stage 4 music in Slug 3! I also totally dig the 1st level tune from slug X

I've only played the third extensively, never touched 2 or X. I played the first a few times at the arcade, but never got to spend quality time with it (I moved, and the next down didn't have a Neo).

MS3 is one of the best games I've ever owned. I've got high hopes for the fourth, but I'm a holdout for right now.

I love MS3, and it does have some kick-ass music, especially Stage 2. It just seems like a part of a different series than Metal Slug, though.

Since when was Metal Slug "DARK". It has and always will be funny!

It was extremely funny when the soldiers screamed at you when you respawned. The exagerated guns, tanks, the woman choking her cat in level 3. All funny!

Perhaps not as "dark" as, uhm, SS3 perhaps, but more focussed on the military theme.

Of course MS3 is a great game, but the original Slug had such a cool atmosphere... I can't describe it exactly... ...and the ending with the paper plane which flies over all the trenches is just wonderful.

I liked the Aliens! Not because they were Aliens, but they provided good ideas for the game.

I remind you of the vertical shooter starglider sequence. Or the weaponry like the mobile satellite.

After all I thought it was nice. Honestly I think this General Morden stuff is a bit....annoying! This guy has got his ass kicked often enough!

I think that is good to add new ideas to the MS series. I think that these series have been so successfull because in each new game you can see new things, not always the same soldiers all over again. Soldiers, crabs, aliens, zombies, robots... it's very funny how the MS mix all these things. I think that's the key.

Anyway, the ambient, the magic and the detiled scenarios of MS1 will never be beaten.

The only things I missed from Slug X that was not in Slug 3 was the insane military machine bosses. The moving base from level 3 is insane, along with the flame ball totin train boss from level 2.

That weird face boss in level 4 in slug 3 was just weird.......not like thats a bad thing!

Call me crazy, but wtf is wrong with the light hearted humor of the MS games. I have no problems with the aliens either. Don't know why people fell a game has to have a serious tone 24/7 in order to be good. I've played some games that gave me a good laugh and were overall more enjoyable than those snorefest serious games.

I love the look of the UFO crafts you shoot. I think they look cool. However, I don't like the look of the squid-like aliens. They're just not up to snuff artistically as the rest of the graphical presentation.

I agree. Metal Slug 1 has the "Seriousness level" of Super Mario Brothers. That's what made it so great! A cartoon world with blood n' guts! I mean, c'mon. There's soldiers in their boxer shorts sunning themselves on the decks of the boats your are blowing up. Not only that, the Metal Slugs themselves are just about the "cutest" tanks that ever existed! :)
