Can irritating maze be played without a special controller?

Or is it just dead weight...

Picked up a 1 slot board and this game was packaged with it. I actually kinda want to play it, but I sure as heck don't want to buy some kind of trackball setup for it.

Unfortunately, i think you MUST have that special trackball set-up to actually play the game...

If it came with the board, I hope you did not get one of the dedicated boards.

Even with the special joystick, it's not quite up to snuff. The only thing that really sold this game in the arcade was that the cab for this game would do wack stuff like hitting the players with air jets if they died and things like that.

Well, there are some one slot boards that are dedicated for Irritating Maze, but the BIOS can be changed out I believe.

You're hilarious. ;)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think buying a trackball for a Sigma unit would be very expensive. I want to goof around with the game a bit, but...

So there's hope?

I posted the auction. I mean, it looked like a normal board with an Irritating Maze cart stuck in there.

If I do have to change the bios, where can I get a new one? Is it just a matter of soldering it in?

Man, it seemed like such a good deal, too. ;)

Check out this THREAD by RevQuixo. Afterwards, do a search in Tech Support for "Irritating Maze." The search function still works in there.

That auction looks like a dedicated IM board. You will need to swap out the Bios in order to use standard controllers.

Where can I get the bios? Is it just a matter of taking one out, and soldering the other in?

Or are there "special" things I need to do?

The bios fortunately aren't soldered..so you just need to pop it off. and replace it with a standard bios.

Jeff kurtz should be able to hook you up with either a plain jane bios or one of his nifty 4x bios.

Briggs talks about Bios replacement on www.hardmvs.com (damn i whore out his site a lot :) )

you will also have to remove that jamma interface board..it just pops off so no biggie. So put that interface board, the IM bios, and the IM cart into the back of your closet because unless you get a trackball, they aren't going to do much for you.

Uh, the board is the newer 1B or 1C. On mine, the BIOS is a flatpack soldered in. Not a plug in at all, unless they have the bios onto the standard DIP configuration :)

If it's the 1B dedicted IM MVS board, the BIOS is a SOP style ROM, which is surface mounted, so you would need to remove that and then wire a socket in place. Not an easy task for the beginner to take on, but can be done...

I've tried to get blank 27C1024 eproms in this package but nobody stocks them and manufacturers are asses when you ask for just a couple of them.

Oh, man, I can't handle a lot of work. ;)

Basically I'm an idiot when it comes to electronics. Sure, I can solder stuff, but this sounds kinda difficult...

Can anybody do this mod, or am I screwed?

I sent you a PM, Jeff. Can you do this mod for me? What's the price?
