Well This Weekend I spent my time converting a Savage Reign NGH into a Kizuna Super tag Battle NGH. Now before everyone starts to call me a Cart Killer ;) just so you know I plan on also converting the Kizuna NGM into a Savage Reign NGM which is also hard to find.

Okay lets start with a little history which is gathered mostly from Hearsay but probably has some truth in it.

History

Savage Reign (Game code 059) was not as big of a hit as hoped. There was alot of stockpile of the NGM carts laying around. A sequel had been planed for Savage Reign but is was put on the back burner. Apparently though later on it was given the go and Kizuna was made using the old Savage Reign boards, since alot of the character garphics, sounds and music were reused. which is why most all the Kizuna encounter NGM's have a mix of (gamecode 059) and (Gamecode 216) chips.

The Conversion

Really this is probably the easiest conversion to do since all the is required is to replace 7 chips and change a few jumpers. I personal had to play around with the jumper settings for the last few jumpers on NEO-AEG CHA256BY board other then that everything else was pretty straight forware. ok so here is the tools I used

1 Kizuna Encounter NGM
1 Savage Reign NGH

parts
Solder Iron
Solder
Desolder braid
(could have used some tweezers for those jumpers) or just make a solder bridge

ok to do this conversion require replacement of 7 chips on the NGH boards and setting a few jumpers on the NEO-AEG CHA256BY board so first step is to remove the chips

Remove the follow chips From the NGM boards

216-V2
216-V4
216-P1
216-C4
216-C3
216-M1
216-S1

Remove the following chips from the NGH boards

059-V2
059-P1
059-C4
059-C3
059-M1
059-S1

Now Solder the chips into the NGH board as follows

on the Neo-AEG Progtop2y board solder in

216-V2
216-V4
216-P1

and that's it your done with that board

Now on the Neo-AEG CHA256BY board solder in the following chips

216-C4
216-C3
216-M1
216-S1

the jumpers need to be set as following on the board.

J1 0ff
J2 on
J3 on
J4 off
J5 off
J6 off
J7 off
J8 off
J9 on
J10 on
J11 off
J12 on
J13 off
J14 off
J15 ON
J16 off
J17 on
J18 on
J19 on
J20 off

and that's it ;) east huh. in looking back I could have probably used a Samurai Shodown II as a sac or another 94-95 NGH but I choose Savage Reign since it required the least amount of chip moves .

Now for the ART the All about SNK Character Illustration Vol 1 has a full Page of the Kizuna Art. I made a NGH sticker and am working on some box art which I should have done soon.

Then I will work on converting the Kizuna Encounter NGM to a Savage Reign. All in all it was pretty easy as you can see. I will try to post some pictures and add this to my webpage with pics. Or if someone wants to put it up I can just send the pics and the instruction.

Thanks for the interesting read, Big Bruno. Normally I am opposed to cart conversion, but at least nothing winds up in the scrap heap this way. :)

Yeah I figured people would like that. But really how many Savage Reign NGMs do you see now days. I have not run across to many although I know they are out there. Anyway it is easy enough to do. I think once the supply of Savage Reigns were used up there was a run of Kizuna's made but not sure. At any rate most NGM-NGH conversion is not really that hard since it is all a mater of matching boards (the NGM and the NGH boards numbers and years) although really you can use different boards it just requires more wireing and *gasp* modification.

Truthfully I would not doubt if SNK themselves modified the Savage Reign NGH's and Made Them Kizuna NGH's as well. Which would account for the low number of Kizuna NGH's out there.

I do not see myself doing to many conversions though. it is a fairly slow process with older tools. I really have no problem with people doing Conversions although others do, I just look as it as a hobby and now I can play Kizuna on my home system without using the convertor and soon savage Reign on my cab. anyway I gave the savage reign insert to Tiptonium so even that was spared, now I have a very Badly battered manual anyone is welcome to ;)

oh and total cost of the conversion was only around $160 plus my time. Sure beat the hell out of the going rate for a Real Kizuna NGH ;)

Actually, I have two Savage Reign MVS kits. One was purchased new from someone, and the other used, but NM/M and complete. These are the only two I have seen, though. :D

Wow,

Normally I am opposed to conversions, but I can't see any wrongdoing in this. I actually like this idea. I don't plan on doing it myself, but this is a pretty sweet conversion you got going here.

Hey Phil,
Glad to see you finally get that puppy done. I guess when I originally sat and talked with you abotu the conversion, the main thing was figuring out where to set the jumpers on the board.

Of course I'm still flinching on how loud that AES cart was when you popped it open. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[LOL]" />

Well now I just got down making the Savage Reign NGM. So here is what I did from the parts left over.

On the Neo-MVS Progtop

Solder in Chips
059-V2
059-P1

Move R2 Bridge to R3
Done

On the Neo-MVS CHA256

solder in the following chips

059-s1
059-m1
059-c3
059-c4

Jumpers That need to be changed.

J7-ON
J8-ON
J9-off
J10-off
J12-off
R2-on

Disclaimer.

Ok I have tested both conversions on my cab and home system and the work fine. I have not played them to the finish though ( those bosses are a pain sometimes when your out of pratice) So I can not say 100% the above is correct. The settings for this one I actually compared to KOF94 NGM to see how it was setup since it is a close meg count to Savage reign and uses the same boards.

at anyrate I will post a pic of both of them with art shortly for Kicks. then go to bed ;)

Oh and this one only took me about 60min while watching Soul Hunter ;)

Ok here is the finshed Products . tell me what you think. I have pictures of the boards as well after conversion but they are BIG to show detail.
Anyway total work time was around 7 hours with most of that spent play testing ;) some for the art work. I know the insert is small but constraints of my Printer. I could print it professional but I am happy with it they way it is. since in going overboard someone might say I was trying to make it official ;) anyway enjoy....Now what other NGH's and NGM's am I missing ...

Phil,
That looks shuweeet dude. I am seriously impressed. Great work. Now I wonder how mch money that conversion will be worth. Seeing as the original Big Bruno Slug 1 is a one of a kind item. :D

Thanks,

I do not really want to sell it though. I guess I could have made a run of savage reign NGH's and Kizuna NGMS and made some side money doing conversions. But I like to share the info more. The NGH sticker I printed on my inkjet then covered with some clear shelf paper to make it have the Sheen. the insert does not wrap completly around around and i did not fool with the screen shots. The savage reign NGM I just used that standard label template I showed you.

Hey Bruno. I have to admit, I kinda want to try this now.

I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, but my only previous experience with games was modding my DC (And with the new, streamlined 4 wire kit).

How easy is the Kizuna/Savage Reign conversion to fuck up?

That damn SR AES cart goes for over $100, so I'd hate to ruin one...

(I'd be a cart-killer) <img src="graemlins/shame.gif" border="0" alt="[Shame]" />

I am sorry I am only going to help those who will resurect the carts to thier new form, not someone who will blantly kill them ;)

anyway neo carts are very sturdy. I actually played around with the jumpers a bit (bridge one jumper test play, take bridge off test play again, bridge another test something else). as long as you do not bridge pins or some such it is pretty easy. I have very little soldering experience myself other then mods and some amiga work i did.

hints.

when removing and adding jumpers add solder to each side of the conection then place iron across to remove. puting them somewhere else is the pain part. there are only 5 or so jumpers to move to make the Kizuna conversion I just listed all since I did not have anything to reference. If you like I can send you the pictures of the completed boards and the Digital files of my artwork as long as you promise to sign my Name on the back of the insert, on the board and in invisable ink on the sticker ;)

Although I am confident I did everything correctly this is my first conversion SOLO so i can not be sure other then both carts seem to work fine. Just a disclaimer so I do not hear "I screwed up a Savage Reign NGH and my Neo blew up and burned down my house thanks to Big Bruno" type response if things go awry ;)

Thanks for the very informative description regarding this process. Plus, you saved both carts! How cool is that? :) I've got a couple of Samurai Shodown II spares.... hmmmmm.... I better not though. Great job. I'm going to save this information for later reference.

Good luck on testing if the end credits in SAVAGE REIGN are 'really working'!

That *+%& final boss is nearly impossible to beat...

On the other hand-nobody else will be able to check, too,so why bother! ;) :D
