Something just occured to me.

I don't know.. every way i look at it, i'm almost CERTAIN that very few people outside this site buy neo geo games. I mean, i just don't see how there could be an amount of people greater than the amount of people here that play neo geo.

And another thing... is there a dedicated Neo Geo fanbase in japan? I have a few native japanese friends all around the age of 17/18. They said they've never heard of it.

KOF is slightly different. We all know that KOF has a large following in the arcades, but do people buy the actual carts?

hmm... Maybe i'm wrong, maybe i'm oblivious to something, but it certainly doesn't feel that way.

Anyone know? <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

EDIT: added a "?" to the title.

I remember when KOF 2001 came out on homecart someone linked to Magic Box it had made the top 20 selling over 6000 carts in the first week.

Funny you should ask...

Last night I asked my friend what he thought the most famous NEO GEO game was. His answer:

uhh, it's Street Fighter isn't it?

My girlfriend had never even heard of the NEO GEO before she met me.

The biggest electronics store in town only stocks one copy of each new NEO cart. I've been to three major used video game stores to look for NEO stuff, and I didn't find anything. At one place they didn't even know what the NEO GEO was!

So aside from the people who regularly go to arcades, or some anime otaku, most people have no idea about the NEO.

Here's the address of one Japanese fan site though. If your computer can read Japanese (more importantly, if you can read Japanese) you might want to check it out...

oh yeah, and btw...

The two friends I was hanging out with last night are big-time pachipuro, pachinko players, they get their money from playing every day.

I asked them about Aruze, one had never heard of them, the other told be they used to make a lot of really popular machines a few years ago, but recently they don't put out very much.

been there plenty - they have good information. :D

you know, there are so many deals with the neogeo on yahoo japan that the neo geo has it's own category. And you don't have to wade through MVS junk either. :p Almost all home consumer stuff and collectables. Too bad most japanese people don't want to deal with you when you a> live outside Japan and b> don't speak japanese. You're all screwed. Enjoy the bay.

When SNK was alive and well, into 2000, people should have known all about SNK if they lived in the Tokyo area just because Neo Geo world Tokyo Bay was right next to the biggest ferris wheel in the world, and was a great date spot. Actually, NGW:TB didn't have many arcade machines. It was mostly rides and events. Very fun place, but a let down if you were expecting to play every game in the 120 soft library. When I last went there they had Garou, Strikers II, Beast Busters, and a bunch of Sega machines...

The fact that there were many Neo Geo World, Neo Geo Land, etc in Japan should mean that there was a large fanbase. The fanbase for capcom in the US is huge, but there are no Capcom Worlds - which would make some good dough in the right spots.

But I think that there was never a move to centralize the fans of the neo geo, and so that is how things are in Japan...

I have a book but i need to get it back from my friggin dad who stole it.

Yeah wasabi, i was thinking about the Neo Geo World having at least SOME effect, you know? I mean, for christ sake it's a BUILDING! a BIG one toO!

there are many cultures in Japan, just as there are here. Like I don't know shit about karate or taekwondo, but other people do, and beyond ninjutsu, karate, judo, taekwondo, kung-fu, kickboxing, and capoera, I don't know the other names - and that's like brands, you know. So I guess many japanese know SEGA, Nintendo, Sony, Square, Capcom and Konami, but other than that you're in cult territory.
