A similar thing happened in the mid 80's. Arcades recovered then, they probobly will again.

From what I can see arcades have evolved.

no more big mall aracdes although there are still some.

Most have gone the route of the Dave and busters or Jillians. Also the supertracks and golf courses.

the type of games have changed alot to, bigger cabs, more physical and back to specialty cabs. like the dance games, scrach games, paddle games, Bike games, even a fire house games

but they are not longer the 2 billion dollar industry as in the 80's. they will not fade away but are reducing in places to go to play a decent game. But this is only in the US. I think in other countries they still do well.

i think that arcades will live on in very large arcade centers rather than in malls. I think this is going to be the only places that we will see all the new arcade games at.

Arcades are dead.

Long live arcades.

You will never see an arcade that can boast better graphics then what you could produce on a home console ever again. Can we say XBOX?

Now the experience is a different deal.

You will never be able to recreate the enjoyment of a "sit down in the car" cabinet racer and compete online via broadband against some snowflake in Alaska using a home system controller

Oh well...

Arcades still do well over here,we have seaside resorts with huge arcade centers
like at southend, brighton, blackpool and many holiday locations and pubs and clubs still have a few.So i havent noticed it on the decline, although new arcade machines are very expensive and not many places fork out the money for the new gear like they used to.

The x-box is a console pc it will have a p3-733mhz with 32mb shared ram and a 10gb hard drive and will most likely have an operating system plus it has a geforce 3 graphics chip.
As good as this sounds on paper i think the ram will hold its power back my pc is a 1200mhz athlon and geforce2 but what helps my pc run at its best is the 256mb of ram i have, the x-box is bound to suffer from not arcade games but a load of pc games i personaly would not need one with the type of pc i have.
Arcades will and always have been more advanced than home consoles or pc's im talking about the latest ones that are about £50,000 each they dont have a cd-player or hard drive but run off direct access ram and pcb's for this reason they dont have restrictions, ive seen new arcade machines and
although i havent played them they look better than x-box or pc,because the hardwares used to full effect with no shitty operating system or ram holding it back.
Trouble is they are fucking expensive cos its kind of old technology now,but its far better than the IBM crap im typing on now.
And as you rightly say no home pc or console can replace the arcade racer experience, with bumping hydrolics a steering weel, throttle and brake and booming sound.

There is something to be said for playing the newest arcade game in a arcade long before it hits home. Sad truth is though, arcades are dying. People just don't pack into the arcades like they used to for SF2 and MK. The days of fighting through long lines to play SS.

Seems like Arcades are evolving into MINI Carnivals...more interactive cometative games where you win prizes, with less and less cabs & pins.

Redemption games are eating away at the space and profits of regular arcades. I don't believe that arcades are dying. They have moved into the basements and gamerooms of america where in dimly light rooms one can peer back in time.

THEYRE DYING ALRIGHT........

I REMEMBER THE HUGE CROWDS GAMES USED TO PULL, NOW?

THE LAST BIG CROWD I SAW WAS WHEN DDR WAS NEW, AND THERE WAS THIS GIRL BOUNCING UP AND DOWN ON IT, AND ALL YOU COULD SEE WAS HER BOYFRIEND WITH A SILLY SMILE ON HIS FACE AND 200 OTHER GUYS TRYING TO GET THEIR LADIES ON THE THING NEXT OR JUST DROOLING OVER THE ONE ON THE THING.......

THEY ARENT DEAD, BUT THEY CERTAINLY ARENT "JUMPING" AS THEY WERE A FEW YEARS AGO......

That's a good point. No home console can duplicate the intensity and simulation as arcade games like Hydro Thunder. I recently played this game and it's awesome - gives me a rush, and the graphics are amazing. I know, I know, it's a little late to have started playing that game The dreamcast version pales in comparison, and no where near that experience. Maybe if one was to get the Intensifier (!?)chair

Big Bear- I have noticed this as well myself. The damned ticket pukers are starting to overproliferate. GameWorks has a whole section devoted to these things called the "Carnaval"(sic). In my opinion, an arcade needs no more than 4 redemption games.

Most of the "real" games you see now are "Gimmick" games. If it hasn't got a steering wheel or a gun, you likely won't see it at an arcade near you. It stinks that places like GW and D&B won't touch some great games like MS3, Dimahoo, etc.

Didn't you hear the news...
Arcades have been dead for years now. Everyplace I have been to has more ticket games than videogames. They are all family oriented now.

I think they will just evolve. I thought small dimly lit arcades were cool when i was younger, but I think most people now want a better experience and atmosphere. There is a Sega Gameworks right near my house. And it is cool. First off the place is f'n huge. I have never seen an arcade this big, it is two stories. It's got tons of games. A lot of high tech ones. It's got a cool restaurant and bar. It is awesome. It even has some old school games like Mario Bros and Pac- Man in these cool wooden cabinets near the bar that you can even rest your beer on. I don't think Arcades are dead. Just the ones of yesteryear are dead.

I think the reason arcades aren't doing so well is because there aren't alot of new releases for arcades

the 80's was the best for Arcades, well, I was born in 87, but the 3 years were great!
Followed by the great early 90's

I played Ninja Turtles when i was 3, aswell as Simpsons, (Which I Own Both) and all other great classics, all the best games were in the 80's and early 90's.

I think from 1998 Arcades went down hill, with racing games, shooting games ect, its very rare to see atleast 1 Joystick Button type machine in any arcade in the UK.

The best places in the UK for classic arcade games would have to be Holiday Camp Sites, The ones in Devon are GREAT!

Metal Slugs are found the most around Devon.
Which is great!

But i wish the classic days would come back!
I really do
I can only grasp onto my very early years by actullly buying the machines/PCB.
And im graduly getting my past back,

I just wish they would bring the Classic Arcades Back!

Call a priest, the arcades are dead.

The crop of gamers coming up now have almost Zero intrest in going to an arcade and paying to play a game. For them its all about the MMORPGS and Multi player FPS as such. The Net has become the arcade for them, but without the social interaction and the like.

I remeber going to the arcade to get some practice in on Sam Sho, Street Fighter 2T and countless other games back in the day. You could always pick up new tricks and strats for the other players, make some friends, win a few matches and have some fun. Sadly, that's all gone. I really miss those days. The kids today don't care about any of that.

The last time I went to an arcade there were only 3 people there besides me. I played the MS4 cab and remembered all the good times at the arcade.

Yeah, sad to say, arcades are the thing of the past.I had fond memories of going to the arcades with my friends, challenging other gamers to a match of SF2 and Samurai Shodown.Nowadays, kids only know about Counter Strike and Halo.Like most have already mentioned, there is no more interaction between gamers. That's why we should throw one bad ass get together!Wouldn't THAT be nice?

I have three within a ten minute walk of my house, one six slot and one one slot among them.

They aren't dead where I live.
