Hiya. The Samurai Showdown series is one amazing legacy of games that is so entrenched in ancient (and not so ancient) Japanese history it simply blows my mind every time I play it.

About the frog, most of us know that Genjuro's attacks are inspired by a popular Japanese card game known as Hanafuda, a game that involves trying to match up 48 cards to form powerful, high scoring combinations.

The pose Genjuro strikes with the frog (him, holding an umbrella with the frog sitting nearby) is taken directly from a 20 pt. willow suit card. Other than that, he serves no purpose.

Hope that helps.

Considering his attacks deal with Hanafuda cards it makes sense.

<shrug>

I feel like playing Hanafuda now. Dammit, my DC and MotW is at home, and I'm at work.

...

Well, at least I'm at work and surfing.

Many of Genjuro's moves/poses are inspired by the Hanafuda game. Hell, even his stage in Shodown 2 (one of the coolest stages of all time) is an actual card.

Story wise, since Genjuro likes to be a hardass he pretends he doesn't like the frog very much. He treats him (her? both him and her? I forget how frogs are) like an annoyance when in reality he enjoys the frog's company very much. Kind of like many popular hero/sidekick or teacher/student partnerships.

For the record, Hanafuda is the name of the DECK, not the games played with it. That's like calling your average deck of European cards "Poker." Many different games can be played with a hanafuda deck.
