How do I tell if a cart is a "bootleg" or "fake"?

I just received a copy of the AES Samurai Shodown III (US) that I bought for $40.00 with shipping included. Everything appears to be the same, but I'm not too sure what I'm looking for. The game works fine - and that's what I really care about since I payed so little - but I'm just a tad suspicious.

i am pretty sure your sam 3 is 100 % real

cos sam 3 us is worth dunno,100 bucks max

there is a lot of time needed,
efforts and costs involved in a conversion

it all just aint worth it,
for a sam 3 us

That's what I was thinking. But it's in NM condition, and it just seemed really low for the AES version. I bought it off ebay, but it was just "Samurai Shodown III cart", didn't say MVS or AES, so I emailed the kid and asked and he sounded more confused than anything else. He just described the case, said 282 megs on spine, yada yada - so I bought in now for 40 bucks. Stupid seller.

EDIT

Just for future reference, what do I look for in boot-legs and such?

If insert and sticker are well made, the only way to spot a bootleg is to open the cart case...

Well, "bootleg" homecarts are usually conversions, so look out for the word "conversions" "convert" etc. in the advertisement... For instance, if you see Metal Slug 1 for sale for about 200 bucks, it is most likely a converted cart... .. Even questionable carts (IE Korean SSIV) are argued by some to be official SNK products... But Samurai Shodown 3 HC for 40 bucks... That's an awesome deal...

If the insert and book are real, then don't worry.

Samurai 3 isn't worth doing a conversion for, cause it isn't rare. And I've never heard of SS3 bootleg carts.
