I'm talking about games like RS, and soon Ikaruga.

I know that in the arcade these shooters is placed on a cab with vertically long monitors....

My question is, since I rarely play shooters on console, what happen if these games is ported to the console?

Will it display like normal, or will it have black borders on the side (to make it look like the arcade)???

Ok

And to answer Ray_7's question directly:

Usually the home versions will allow you to select the screen setup from the following
1)Bars on the side
2)Cropped at the top and bottom
3)Full width, but also scrolls up and down accordingly
4)Horizontal (so you have to tilt your screen)

Radiant Silvergun did not have the tall screen. It is an STV game and they all have the normal aspect ratio.

Ikaruga may have some problems because it is designed for the tall monitors.

That said, it's usually not a big deal on home systems when the game was developed for a tall monitor.

Some console shooter games that are arcade conversions sometimes have the option to turn your TV 90 degrees, like Gunbird 2 for DC. Anyway RS didn't have it so I don't really think Ikaruga will feature it, but it would be good.

ARRRRRRRGH, listen people, Radiant Silvergun does not use the tall arcade monitor!

You simply don't need to because the game was designed for normal monitors!!

Saying that Ikaruga wont have it because Radiant Silvergun didn't have it is NUTS!

Radiant Silvergun didn't use a tall monitor, but Shienryu (another ST-V cart) did.

but the point still stands. Like terra diver, which is another great shooter on the st-v, does not use a tall monitor.

The heart breaker for me is 19xX on the CPS2, which I spent way too much money on in the arcades, uses a tall monitor.

Hey, hey , wait a minute...

What do you mean by flipping the TV?

flipping your TV, aka TATE mode, is turning your TV on it's side, so the screen isn't horizontal, it's vertical. It's basically just taking your TV, and rotating it 90 degree's counter-clockwise. Just be careful when you do this, let your TV sit for 20-30 minutes (with the power off), and then turn it on *some older TV's handle this rather poorly, and the colors get all strange*.

Many shooter games actually use this: DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Raiden series, Battle Garegga, Strikers 1945 series (excluding Neo Geo version), Gunbird series, etc. Plus many older arcade games use it as well.

Gunbird 2 DC (US) does have TATE mode in it, check it out :)

Now, 50 bonus points to the person who can explain why so many shooters use tate mode.

:) No problem! Forgot to mention, change the controller setting in GB2 options, so it's not like your playing the game Raiden Project style ;)

Is it safe? Well, as long as you are careful with your TV when you rotate it (don't drop it), you should be ok. If the TV is well built you shouldn't have a problem as well. 32" is a damn big TV, so be careful regardless. Make sure it's securely placed when you lay it down (some TV set's are rounded on the side... I remedy that by sticking some kinda cloth to prevent it from moving, in my case). Worst case scenario, you flip it, and the colors get all screwy (just put it back in it's horizontal position).

I flip my TV regularly, and so far no serious problems. :)

Oh well, I won't be able to flip mine at the moment, it's too freakin heavy!!!!

Will this method works with wide-screen TV or plasma TV? Coz then, it will look like those arcade monitors...

I have yet to try it with a wide screen or a plasma screen (I presume you mean a TV w/ a 16:9 aspect ratio), so I wouldn't know offhand, and with the cash for those TV's, even I'd be a tad nervous trying that out! :) I would of flipped my 36" WEGA along time ago if they just made them a tad bit lighter, as well.

Like Venturis said (? <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" /> ;) ) you can also use a computer monitor (and for a DC game using VGA, it'll probably look stunning), but also I never tried that personally, just read about it. For a Naomi based game, this would probably be the best scenario, as I don't think Naomi outputs RGB...

OK, actually, is this thing recommendable by, say, the TV's manual?

I mean, are you supposed to turn your TVs around?

No, I don't think US TV's would come with such a warning; most games that have such a feature come with warnings saying "You can break your TV... yada yada yada..." but that's how the game is played ;)

Oh well, might get a smaller TV to try this one out...

And, it's counter-clockwise right?

Yeah, counter-clockwise; just turn the game on and set the option for vertical position, in case your unsure. Good luck, and enjoy!
