Shawn (the owner?) must be paying a lot of money for the bandwidth and hosting of this site and Forum. An ad or two wouldn't hurt, I suppose. Although I'd prefer banners to pop-ups.

I consider banners, and especially pop-ups, to be extremely annoying. I would much rather pay for the bandwidth, than be paid for advertising at the expense of the viewer’s enjoyment.

Wow! That's really cool Shawn. Thanks from me as well. This site has become my main interest for the last few months and hopefully will continue to be so. These boards are so much better than the other ones I used to surf (gamefaqs -- it's all little kids, and gamespot -- all fanboys).

I actually never frequented that site very much. And when they went to that subscription service I dropped them altogether.

Neo-Geo.com is hosted on a dedicated server with Hostway. http://www.hostway.com/

The setup fee was $490, the annually recurring fee is $6200. We are allocated 50GB of bandwidth per month, but for every 10 GB we go over, there is a $20 fee. People download an average of 4.5 GB per day. That averages to 140 GB per month. Cost of hosting NG.com averages to $700 per month & $8,400 per year.

FYI, NeoStore.com is on a totally different server with a separate hosting fee.

Why not set up a subscription service, where we can subscribe and get access to extra forums the general spamming cannot?

Maybe subscribers could get a neo store discount?
;)

I should have put this in suggestions, but it seemed relevant here.

I didn't say shut everyone out, I said offer a small bonus to the dedicated users who want to help keep the site up and running.

I remember the server overage bills, and downtime. Not a pleasant thing.

See everyone bitches about the prices in the neo store but this overhead has to come from somewhere folks. Lot of money goes out each year so we can flap our gums :D

Kids these days...

I'd be perfectly happy to pitch in 25 bucks a year for extra privledges, to help allieveiate the server costs here. Some people just have the hardest time grasping the concept of paying for something online.

For the 25.00 a year, you could get bonuses like animated avatars, the ability to lock your own threads, or your own custom rank.

I've been an occasional critic of the NeoStore, but I am genuinely appreciative of this bbs. Shawn does indeed deserve thanks for this.

So would I but the best thing we can do is pledge to buy our new carts from the new store. That alone would help out and why buy them from NCSX? all they ever gave us was a bull shit price on 2K1!!

Shawn: That's quite a lot of dough, and you won't even consider advertisement as another form of revenue?

Don't get me wrong, I don't like ads either, but if it would help lighten the load on your wallet I'm all up for it. I could think of a million things to spend $700+ a month on as opposed to spending it on bandwidth. Banners don't bother me as much as pop-ups do, granted banners don't bring as much revenue as pop-ups do.

Personally, I don't think yearly "membership" fees would work out so well. And besides, giving certain members extra privileges is unjust, IMHO.

Just trying to alleviate your server costs. ^_~

I can grasp the concept of dishing out $25 a year for neat stuff, I'm not braindead. I just think it's harder for people without Paypal or credit cards to pay. Think about the audience of 17 and under that love this site, we don't have credit cards, more than likely we don't have Paypal either. Think about the children!

Not many people may know, but next to all those AES games Shawn has in his house, he has 40 cases of Top Ramen instant noodles and two freezer full of Budget Gourment Frozen dinners. This is obviously due to all the outrageous website fees.

It wouldn't take away anything from you "the children"[ ], but it would give someone bonuses like making my rank "Top Hunter", whereas you would cycle through the normal list of cystom ranks.
