It sucks that all of the feed on this cart is so lame. I was thinking "great, I can get a 2003 neo fighter for under $80", but word on the forum and reviews is that its weak. The graphics look tight in the screenshots, what is everybodys real drawbacks on this cart? Opinions? help

PS: I put MY opinion of ROTD on the end of this thread.

It can be a lot of fun, actually. And if you get the cart for $50 MVS, it's definitely worth it. I don't feel it was worth the $200 I paid for it MVS though.

As a single player experience, it can be a bit lacking because the final boss, Johann, is fucking ridiculous. If you have people to play with, however, the game can be a lot of fun.

ROTD is a fantastic game. As a matter of fact, I wish the MVS cart would have cost way more so I could have justified buying the AES version instead.

Don't listen to the naysayers.

It is a FUN little fighting game. It's not on that requires a year of learning the game and insane skill to master.

It's a FUN fighter designed for the casual fan.

It's not the end-all-be-all OMFG fighting game -- Think KOF '98 bore fest.

This is designed to pick up, take 10 minutes of learning and play fast.

Pick it up, ESPECIALLY at the MVS price.

its not that bad and worth the money considering its a neo geo game. i only played it a few days on mvs but it had probs so i sold it but if it would have worked ok all the time i would have got some fun out of it.

Better yet, how does it compare with ANY of the KOF series? Not better-worse, cause I already know that outcome. I mean compare A-B qualities. I would love to have a newer KOF MVS cart, but I am what they call, 'curency challanged'.
So, A-B?

It's a great fighter to load up and have fun with. I don't see any tournaments being set up around this game, but it's easy to learn, looks good, and has some good music.

I love it.

It's a slick little fighter with a great soundtrack and flashy graphics.

Get the MVS if you can, it's well worth the price.

It's very colorful and the character art is great IMHO.
The backgrounds are kinda' dull.
I like the church level and the music in that one; makes it feel like an epic battle or something.
It has some ubiquitous special effects that resemble flash bangs and the fading vision you get before passing out.
As a video game I'd give it a six out of ten, but since it is an MVS cart, $44 NEW, I'll give it a seven out of ten.

* I tried giving my opinion of it without regards to the price, BUT IT'S SUCH A GREAT PRICE!!!

This is probably my most played Neo game. I picked it up at $70 and I don't regret it at all at that price, it's really fun in my opinion. Sure they got cheap on the Club stage and some of the voices are muffled but for its price (especially what it's at now) you should pick it up, especially for versus play, it's really fun in versus play.

I know im asking for all kinds of hell here but I personally LOVE this game!!! Its not the deepest of fighters but its also not MVC2 (which is the epitome of horrible titles IMHO). Its quick to learn and easy to play, the tagging and combos can be done by novices and only get better and more extensive once you learn it. The walls (although not executed perfectly) are a nice touch to a 2d fighter. The character designs are original and very slick (just look at Oni's, Billy's, or Elias' design and try and compare them to any other fighter) and it has some of the best sound i have heard on a cart pending you have stereo(that was until i bought Matrimelee). I grew up on the Double Dragon games so the chance to FINALLY have a decent fighter other than that POS fighter from the SNES era got my juices flowing. I like the way makeover that Billy and Jimmy got and the new original story penned for them. The supporting characters are also very colorful and have tons of personality...moreso than your standard "I live to fight" fighters from other titles. The moves are also a step above "look at my fireball and jump to catch a dragon punch". The downfalls are the sometimes questionable AI that lets you pummel it at times or beats you relentlessly (wait until you fight Johann and then see what i mean) and the fact that in single player it does become very stale b/c its not fun mixing up teams to see the different outcomes of the duplex attacks b/c its always the same with the edits whereas when you play with the standard teams you are treated to a nice barrage of effects when teaming up to pummel your opponent.

I know it sounds like Im a die hard fan of this title, which in some aspects I am but Im trying to just give you my honest take on a good game that caught a bad rep for not delivering on the KoF driven machine. In conclusion I say the game is fairly good and very much worth taking a look at ESPECIALLY at the low price it is being offered at now. I paid $400 for mine (aes) so $50 is nothing for this title.

Too much KOF in it.

Tag system is alright, better than most tag
systems out there.

Some ok characters.

Music is alright.

Hate the dial-a-combo system.

it's alright, maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10.

It's a decent game..nothing incredible, but fun from my limited experience with it.

Character art and designs are great. Animation is average though which turned out to be a letdown.

It's better than Matrimelee in my opinion..I think Matrimelee sucks.

I dunno...considering my friend bought it at $60 and still felt ripped off...it just really lacks in so many ways. I'd rather curl up with a true Neo classic then blow time on this 'new' fighter that doesn't do a damn thing some other fighter has done better already.

I give it a 4 out of 10.

At first I was quite happy with it, but after a short while it got stale and boring. If you play vs CPU matches a lot, think twice before buying this game.

excellent game, i would pay double what it goes for. I like the fresh characters and its just a different game IMO. Sure it lacks some depth, can feel sort of like a short fighter, but i think it has endless replay. I got to the point of beating it everytime i played it even on harder settings but then i just give it a break for a while like other games and when i come back its good all over again. I dont think it deserves nearly as much negativity as it gets, there are so many more repetitive KOFs it was damn good to get a change. Next on my list is Matrimelee.

another thing that sucks is so many dislike it yet you rarely see them for sale. collectors damn you give them up :D

The ROTD review on this site (see link above) is spot on. Easyish to master although the final boss is hard as nails! Graphics are great in some stages and awful in others.

Overall it's a fun game!

Johann isn't *that* bad... learn the cheap and nasty tactic that he ALWAYS falls for and you'll beat him every time :)
