Neo CD questions

I've been thinking about picking up a CD system when I get some more money. I have an NGH/AES, and plan on keeping it, but there's just so many games I'm missing due the price of the carts. I had thought about getting a Phantom 1 converter, and sooner or later I probably will, but since CD's will stand the test of time, I figure I should invest in one.

So my question is, which unit or version should I pick up? I've heard that the CDZ's have a lot of problems, even when treated good. What about the front loader? Basically, which one will last longer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Speculation and the general consensus says that the cheap 1x toploader will last the longest, be the most reliable.

I have a CDZ, it's quite nice. I'd suggest against the Phantom-1... For the price of the AES plus P-1, you could have a cab.

I just got a Phantom, and i will have to suggest this as well. The CD works great for older games , but for the new fightin games it's endless loading times. $30-40 is going price for Last Blade on MVS. You can't beat that. I own that on CD, and it seriously has 2+ min load times.

yep, the load times on fighting games are depressing. The whole idea of owning SNK material is that its instantly gratifying and the CD system, with the newer games just kills this notion. It takes all the fun out of playing. I sold my Neo Geo CD system coz I got bored sitting on my hands whilst the game loaded.

hhhmmm.... you are quite right. for someone who has room in their basic dwelling, that should be the better deal. but for others who may not have the luxury of room or even a dedicated "entertainment" room, might have to settle for a portable, take-it-anywhere, AES console and Phantom-1 and the MVS carts.

personally, since i only have neo geo primarily as arcade hobby, my three aes consoles and the phantom-1 is a much suitable setup, and could be cheap too. wouldn't you say?

heh! almost forgot, most AES/MVS carts have easter eggs you can access via DEBUG bios. the CD / CDZ unit do not have those BTW. that might be taken into consideratian... ;)
