I was thinking about this, and I would be fascinated to see what the really clued up gamers have to say about this. A lot of people these days who love these 3D Fighter games like Virtua Fighter and so forth, never really tasted the best of the 2D games.

How do you lot think that the best of the 2D Fighting Genre, like NEO GEO's "Garou King of the Wolves" and KOF 98, match up against the more graphically advanced 3D Fighters like Tekken 3, Virtua Fighter 4 and so forth?

What are your views, I would love to know what the REAL gamers have to say about this!

:D :D :D :D :D

I have to say 2-D fighting games are the greatest. They really stood the test of time. They have cool graphics, great characters and everything. They're the greatest. :D

2D for sure. I haven't played any 3D fighters that can really touch 2D games like SFIII - Third Strike, etc.

Tobal II is a badass 3D fighter though. :D

Well... If there was such a thing as a 3D fighter we might have something to talk about-- but consider that even the most advanced "3d fighter" games are not far removed from Battle arena Toshinden-- and even farther back, on a more basic level, the old "multi plane" fighters like fatal fury. There have been attempts at a more true 3d, but none of these has been with much merit when considering the real implications of a 3D enviorment and the sort of needed movements therein. 2d fighters on the other hand, tend to rely less on little visual tricks/distractions and boil the game down to the essence of the "fight" and the directly related gameplay...
Course if you mean 3D fighting as in real life.. Nothing like getting a few bruises about the face to make you remember why vid games are best. Hell, even a genesis port of virutal fighter is better than that...

2D easily, I can't explain why, but for some reason, alot of the gameplay was lost in the 2d to 3d transition. I can name hundreds of 2D fighters that are great, and the only 3D ones that come to mind are the Dead or Alive games.

2D fighters are so much more fun than 3D fighters. They're so many 3D fighters out there today, they ain't that much fun, because you can keep hitting the same button over and over again and eventually you'll win. But, 2D fighters have more strategy and more fun to play.

I prefer 3 D games, especially tekken tag (the best fighting game ever)

I prefer 2D fighters. Saying that, there are a lot of "3D" fighters that aren't really 3D. They are more like Fatal Fury on steroids, since all that is really available is a side step, you can't just run around like a jackass wherever you want. I realize they do this for playability sake, but it's still doesn't seem right to call it a 3D fighter because it uses polygons. If these can be called 3D fighters, than so can Fatal Fury.

3d just means graphics, nothing about gameplay. Because you can't run around freely doesn't make the graphics 2 dimensional. Free roaming doesn't have anything to do with graphics. With this said, I like both, but there are way more 2d fighters out there that I like than 3d.

I'll admit it, I love Tekken Tag, especially after a lot of stuff Spinmaster showed me. It's a very fun fighter with more depth than most people will give it credit for. If I'm at an arcade and that's all they have, I'll be all over it and enjoy it. If there's a Capcom fighter (that I prefer) or Neo fighter, I'll most likely pick that 9 times out of 10.

Tekken Tag Tournament is one of the few good 3D fighters out there. But, like Virtua Fighter 4, I think it's garbage.

Both are good in their own way.VF4 would suck if it ever goes 2d and KOF would suck if it goes 3d.Leave them as they are.

As for preference, i would say 2d fighters but there are some pretty damn awesome 3d fighters out there which are cool to play if you know what you are doing.

I just figured out a new name for the Garou sequel! :D

2D, no doubt. As for 3d, I think Tekken ruined it for a lot of people. The series has gotten better though.

Good 2-D OWNZ 3-D for free! Problem is that there were waaaaaaaaaay to many Street Fighter II clones after the SF II boom, and it helped pave the way for 3-D fighters, though I'm sure SEGA would have made Virtua Fighter anyway since they're trail blazers and not followers like most companies. Only 3-D fighter I actually think is worth a damn over 2-D is VF IV: Evolution and that's with me never having really mastered VF II on Saturn to boot much less part III.

Could you explain to me why? What is so 'unbelieveable' about it? Tell me so that I'll know for next time.

The fact is, is that you kneed better skills & there's more to playing 2d than 3d. 3d isan't crap either, but from tekken 3 & tag & virtua fighter 3, the class has dropped to try to appeal to novice players. Hopefully they will try to make there 5th fighting sequels back to the hardcore again, as its no use sega & namco making them easier & taking all the advanced stuff out to make them play 2d style, or else whats the point of making them 3d & making the side steps worse & taking the back dashing out of t4 & sc2.

2d has the best of both worlds all wrapped into one, whilst 3d, well is limited, i mean, they havent even worked on the jumping aspect of it yet.

I want to see namco make a game with realism like soul calibur, but make it a fist fighter, so we get to see real life styles from kung-fu & the characters should have lock holds, so you can keep watching what they do & keep breaking out of there enemies lock & go into there own, so it looks like a chinese martial arts film. I was hoping for this style in tekken 4, but i was let down, sigh.
Now, after tekken 4, they should continue with there real game which should of been tekken 4 to begin with, t4 went back on its self but people just gritted there teeth & played it anyway, namco didn't make the steps the same as tekken 3 or tag because novice players would go to there arcade & get an ass whooping, so they made it like a stand up brawling fighting game instead because the steps where toned down, if namco wanted to do this, why didn't they just make a 2d fighter instead.

While your at it,
KOF is better than anyother fighter.

& its no joke, but you kneed good players who progressively get better to see its true potential, it has no weak point just weak players where-ever they are.

Its not like i can't prove it either. I dunno about mvc2 or 1 though, i think they maybe extreamly close. I cant be bothered to down load vids of it, anyone agree with me about mvc or is it shit at high level play with not many oppenings to attack, i do have a rough idear but i thinks it's got some points which make it a decent enough.
