MVS Question

I heard recently that it is possible to take an MVS arcade board and mod it to work on a regular television. Is that how most of you use your MVS systems? I don't have an MVS arcade cabinet, I have a cart system. For one thing arcade machines are big and heavy, and I live on the second-floor of a three-story house. So... getting the MVS unit upstairs poses a problem. Is it possible to use an MVS arcade board on a regular TV? Why would anyone do that though when the arcade machine comes with its own screen? Is it possible to purchase just the arcade board without the casing? What about joysticks and stuff? This makes no sense to me at all.

I also had this query once. I'll try to explain it best I can.
You buy what's called a "SuperGun", which is basically all you need to play the games on your TV. You also need to have a PC Board, in this case a MVS PC Board, either 1,2,4 or 6 slot PCB. Obviously the 1 slot is the better deal here because you have full access to it upfront and can easily switch the cartridge, plus it's way cheaper. These SuperGuns come with joysticks. I dont remember the links to those two places that sell them, one was something with MAS or something. The reason someone would buy a SuperGun is because they dont want to have to deal with the Cabinet, like you said, the weight of it and storage.
Hope that helped some.

Hey NeoLord, were you not going to try and produce a SuperGun type device, except better quality, or am I thinking of someone else? I realise that it may have fallen by the wayside, as you seem to have about as many projects on your plate as I do.

I'm still working on it. With Neo-News, game design (I'm working on some puzzle game),
and a few other ventures, developing this system has been difficult. I'm also working on a Neo-Geo show for next year, so my schedule is booked to full. I need to design a web site for the show, but as always, support will be needed in the form of attendees!

What do you think of the Super NOVA they have on their site, NeoLord? I have been working on a design for a compact MVS four-slot that my sister could take to college with her and stow away in a closet or under her bed, but I am wondering if I should not just get her one of those instead.

You should design one for your sister if you have the time and resources available. I own a Mas Supergun (I ordered it a long time ago) and I'm happy with it. My idea to design a better unit came to me when I was playing my MVS system. I thought having a stylish box with great video (maybe even component video, who knows)for just MVS boards would be better for Neo enthusiasts like ourselves.

That is kind of what I am shooting for. I work for the local arcade gurus, so parts are not really a problem, except we have a shortage of four-slot boards right now.

A co-worker and I came up with the idea when my sis was complaining that she would not be able to fit an arcade cabinet into her dorm room when she goes off to college. I STILL need to scan in the napkins I drew up the rough sketch on (we were at a dinner party)

. When I do, I will post them up. The problem is not the hardware and the hook-ups, but the design itself.

My biggest hurdle is having enough money to produce a quality box for the equipment. I have wiring diagrams to do the job, but again, making a professional case without it looking like a garage job can be difficult.

I was planning on cutting a piece of 1/8 to 1/4 inch aluminum plate to use for the base, and then doing sides, top, etc. out of wood and using a black laquer finish on it. For the joysticks, I was going to make them modular, and have them attach to the front of the unit by a wide-hang hook, but be supported by the aluminum plate base. I could then do a simple plug for the joystick wires, and pre-fab several units, so if one joystick set-up broke, another could be easily attached in its place.

Once I get the scan up, I will email it to you as well. It would be nice if such units could be mass produced, although it would take the efforts of more than one person.

Maybe we can work together in some way? Hell, I'm always willing to collaborate!
Besides, something like this should be a team effort (there's too much to do by ones self).

I agree completely. If we could collaberate and mass produce such items for the Neo community, NGF would be short lived. Who would want their crappy homemade inserts with overpriced carts when you could have a portable MVS cart system?
