At long last, on 9/26/2003, these 3 anime films will be released on Region-2 DVD in Japan:

THE MOTION PICTURE Garou Densetsu
MJBD-70145
7140 yen
(aka "Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture," this theatrical anime film was first seen in Japanese theaters in 1994, competing for ticket sales against the Street Fighter II theatrical anime film)

Battle Spirits Ryuuko no Ken
MJBD-70144
5985 yen
(aka "Art of Fighting," this anime TV special was originally broadcast on 12/23/1993 (10:30pm - 11:25pm) via the Fuji TV network)

Samurai Spirits Haten Kouma no Shou
MJBD-70143
5985 yen
(aka "Samurai Spirits: The Movie," this anime TV special was originally broadcast on 9/18/1994 (1:30pm - 3:00pm) via the Fuji TV network)

I've been waiting for Japan to release SamSpi HKnS ever since it was first broadcast (to the best of my knowledge, it was never released on any video format until now). Yeah, it's not a very good film, but there's been a spot waiting for it in my Chiba Reiko collection for about the last 9 years. I was almost ready to break down and buy the U.S. DVD release earlier this year, figuring this thing would never see the light of day in Japan.

So far, I haven't found any info regarding bonus content on these DVDs, but I'd assume they would include the video game TV commercials featured on their original Japanese laserdisc releases.

Hopefully, the R-2 release of TMP GD will result in the eventual R-2 release of Battle Fighters Garou Densetsu and Battle Fighters Garou Densetsu 2 (the two anime TV specials produced and broadcast prior to TMP GD -- released in the U.S. as "Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf" and "Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle"). If this were to happen, it would mark the R-2 DVD release of every SNK video-game-to-anime project.

Afterthought:
Man, the Japanese are really trying to kick my financial ass in September! I'm already picking up LAST EXILE Vol. 3, THE Big-O SECOND SEASON Vol. 5, Air Master Vol. 3, Shinkon Gattai Godannar ~Prototype~, Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Vol. 3, Popotan Vol. 1, and the Variable Geo NEO soundtrack CD -- then I find out that Kikaider 01 THE ANIMATION (originally released in Japan as a 4-episode direct-to-video sequel mini-series, but shown as the final 4 episodes of "Android Kikaider" on Cartoon Network) is being re-released in Japan in a boxed set, featuring a brand new 25 minute episode, entitled "The Boy with the Guitar" (guest-starring Inazuman, another of Ishinomori Shoutarou's famous tokusatsu heroes). Now Pioneer LDC dump 3 fighting game anime DVDs in my lap. My shopping budget for my New Year's vacation in Japan just keeps getting smaller and smaller... frown

Cool but what about us Gaijins who can't read or understand Japanese? I thought they released Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown the Motion Pictures on DVD here in the states? Or am I mistaking this for another set of movies?

Nope, you're thinking of the right films -- all 3 of these are available in the U.S. Here's something I'd posted on this topic, back in February, updated to reflect the upcoming releases of these 3 films:

- released in Japan on VHS and LD [no R-2 DVD]
- released in the U.S. on VHS and DVD as "Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf"

- released in Japan on VHS and LD [no R-2 DVD]
- released in the U.S. on VHS and DVD as "Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle"

THE MOTION PICTURE Garou Densetsu theatrical anime film
- released in Japan on VHS and LD; R-2 DVD to be released 9/26/2003

Battle Spirits Ryuuko no Ken anime TV special

- released in the U.S. on VHS and DVD as "Art of Fighting"

Samurai Spirits Haten Kouma no Shou anime TV special
- never released in Japan on VHS or LD; R-2 DVD to be released (at long last) 9/26/2003
- released in the U.S. on VHS as "Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture" - DVD release 3/4/2003

Samurai Spirits 2 Asra Zanmaden original video animation Vols. 1-2
- released in Japan as 2 VHS, LD, or DVD volumes
- never released in the U.S.

Nakoruru ~Ano hito kara no okurimono~ Kyouri no iyuu-hen original video animation Vols. 1-2
- vol. 1 released in Japan on VHS and DVD in May, 2002; vol. 2 not yet released
- never released in the U.S.

Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer original video animation Vols. 1-3
- released in Japan on 3 VHS or LD volumes; R-2 DVD finally released in early 2002
- released in the U.S. on 2 VHS vols. or 1 DVD vol. as "Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer"

Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer International Edition digest film
- released in Japan on 1 VHS or LD vol.; R-2 DVD finally released in late 2002
- released in the U.S. on VHS and DVD as "Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer: The Movie"

As of 3/4/2003, every one of these works (with the exception of SS2 Asra Zanmaden and Nakoruru) is available in the U.S. on both VHS and DVD.

You heard correctly -- SS and AoF were pretty damn bad. Still, they've gotta go in my collection. Now if only Groove Corporation would get off their asses and release the concluding volume of Nakoruru ~Ano hito kara no okurimono~ Kyouri no iyuu-hen, all would be well.

They ARE shit.

The part that makes the Samurai Shodown: The Movie suck even worse than it just being a crappy show, is that it's a crappy show with a SUPER FUCKING POOR dub. Tiffany Grant (Asuka from Evangelion in English) with a FAKE ass French accent playing Charlotte? It' makes your eyes and your ears bleed.

I wish ADV had gotten the Japanese track on that one. It would have been better, but still not good.

And as far as AOF... when you watch it, look at the sign for the Dojo. They appear to run the Rainbow Coalition Dojo. The show is total ass as well.

So the AOF and SamSho movies aren't worth the 18 bucks I could get them for at Best Buy? I've heard bad things about them, but what makes them so awful fucking awful? Surely they can't be worse than Tekken: The Motion Picture....?
