An Idea about Arcades

I was cruising over to the Arcade near my house, to discover it had moved across the mall. So I head over there and discover a SNK vs. Capcom machine installed. Figuring this was an easy chance to practice and to get my Iori on, I challenge my friend, and we both take a joystick.

Problem:The left hand side of my joystick doesn't work at all. Since I start out facing right, I can't block. I get my ass kicked.

Solution: To all who read this, we need to work out a code. Like hobos having signs for kind people and places to sleep, gamers should have signs for bum joystick, quarter eater, and stuck buttons.

My suggestion: Scratch an joystick shape (a circle and a straight line) in the plastic next to the broken stick, then cross it out. It doesn't have to be big, just a sign to let people know the stick doesn't work.

Any other ideas for signs?

Oh yes, what a wonderful idea. Let's all damage the equipment even more becuase it is already damaged. Yet more reason why I could never run an arcade. If I was, and I saw you scratch signs into the plastic, you wouldn't have to worry about bum joysticks, because you wouldn't be back.

How about a sign saying "Will work for $0.25"?

That way you won't have to go hungry after wasting a quarting on a machine you can't block on. :D

Why not just tell the operators? Sometimes nobody tell them when something's broken and i guess they do not have a lot of time to test all the controls on all games...

Or go to another arcade where machines are in better shape. My fave arcade rarely has defective machines. I stopped going to another one because the controls weren't in such good shape...

Then after the game is fixed, your silly mark is still there. Bad idea.

Just mention it to the operator. If you really gotta get proactive and want to leave a note for other gamers, may I suggest keeping a pad of Post-Its in your pocket? Scrawl a legible note and put it on the side of the screen, or over the coin door, so that others see it before playing. That way it's not permanent but it gets your message across.

Long ago I wrote an article about the Ten Arcade Commandments--behavior and etiquette in the arcades. I would have pushed to have it reposted online or something except there are no arcades left...

I agree. Waving at the operator, asking kindly to readjust the stick and giving in your nickel would help, instead of damaging the gear.

A tiny scratch on the joystick board... Psh... And how about shitting on the screen as if to say: "That game is shit! Don't play it!"

Just kidding...

2 years ago, i found an arcade with strikers 1945 part 2, it was the only arcade to have it to my knowledge. One button was defective, really sticky. I told the operator... well in fact it was more like a 16 years old girl with her bf in there, i think they didn't care much about games, they kind of laughed at me. Never went back to this arcade, ever. There's like 10 arcades on the same street, i found one full of good games, all one coin...

I've met more friendly operators in other arcades. One even gave me the name of the guy at the dealer where he buys his cabs. Now if i could find the space and money for a cab!

Hope this changes your mind Kamaitachi!
