I'm really interested in everyones opinions on the various [cough] shooters for the neo-geo.

i am in the process of picking up Last Resort, because well, who has 600+ to spend on the others :)

Regardless, i'm eventually going to own them, so I just wanted to hear your guys opinions on them. Including Last Resort. Faves? Worst? Hardest?

Especially the music side of things; I never hear anything about the music for ANY of these shooters.

Thanks!

well... I've still had more fun with Pulstar than any other shooter. Yeah, it's hard as fuck and you have to memorize patterns, but it felt more rewarding than R-Type ever did. I dunno. The day I finished that on one life was a proud day for me.

Last Resort is a great game. It's rather short though, and the last level is a pain. Still, it's definitely a cool experience... and I really like the music in it too. The first level music stuck out in my head when I first played it in the arcade a LONG time ago, mainly because of those sirens. It's still a badass tune.

On the subject of music, I'll mention one game that gets overlooked a lot - Zed Blade. Yeah, it's nothing fancy, the graphics are shit and the gameplay is nothing mind-blowing... but the music is top-notch. The music tracks that are in there are so good, but the problem is they end up recycling the tunes... only 5 main stage tunes, for 8 stages :( still, what's there is great, the boss music is badass too. I wouldn't have given the game a second look if it wasn't for the music, and now I think it's kinda fun... the game is balanced just enough that it can be finished on one credit too.

Here's an MP3 I made a while back of one of the tunes:

Awesome, thanks for that MP3. I would LOVE it if anyone had any other samples, or could point be in the direction of any other music for any of the Neo shooters; as I feel it can really change the pace and my acceptance of a game. Like BBH with Zedblade

Viewpoint has fucking amazing music that made me shake my head in disbelief back in 1992. With the James Brown samples that permeate the boss battles, this game had tuneage I simply didn't think was possible back then. As far as I can remember, this was the first electronic/techno type soundtrack that ever appeared in a video game. Really good stuff, and the game itself is a monument to addictive difficulty. The fourth level will make you want to hurt people.

If you're into Raiden-Twin Cobra style vertical shooters, definitely get yourself a copy of Ghost Pilots. Hard, but fun.

Last Resort is decent, but it's one of those memorization-style shooters in the same vain as RTYPE.

Pulstar is the Neo equivalent of RTYPE and damn hard, no less.

Viewpoint is a fun game, and the isometric 3D style is unique in that no other Neo shooter uses that. Be warned, it's also pretty hard.

Zed Blade and Andro Dunos are Airbuster style horizontal shooters, and emphasize pure action over memorization. You die, you get a new ship immediately without having to start at the last checkpoint reached. I prefer Andro Dunos because it's simple shooting fun.

Am i the only one wondering why nobody has brought up Blazing Star ? Some of the nicest graphics and level design in a 2d shooter on mvs!

I'll bring up prehistoric isle 2 but i find it "not that good" personally..

I thought Last Resort was a little dissapointing. There are certian sections where you cannot avoid being hit. I understand the gamemakers are trying to make money in arcades, but it takes away from the fun at home.

Try Areo Fighters 2. The graphics ain't the best, but its fun. Viewpoint is awesome, but damn hard. Last Resort is fun as well, but sometimes unfair.

Well, i know I will get flamed, but Andro Dunos is a very nice shooter, if you do not need gorgeus graphics. It plays very well and thats what conts for me. Very Gradius-esque.

The Neo, despite being my favorite system, is pretty short on good shooters. That being said, however, my favorite shooter of all time is on the Neo- PULSTAR.

A godly game and one of the (for me) truest and purest 2D games ever. If I wasn't an Atheist, I'd say God himself crafted Pulstar :)

Blazing Star is also quite amazing, with some truly wicked visuals and super frenetic gameplay. Probably the best looking side-scroll shooter ever.

Viewpoint is also a timeless classic and an amazing game, with some of the best tunes in a game ever.

I also dig Strikers and Prehistoric Isle 2.

But that's only 5 games (With 3 of them being some of the best shmups of all time). Compared to the Saturn, the Neo's got hardly anything.

But nothing on any system compares to Pulstar...

What a shame that noone think about Alpha Mission 2 (ASO2).
Definitly one of the best! The graphisms are very good , you can play it in 2 pleyer mode, you can pick up armor for your ship and all the game is hard but not impossible.
The music are awesome! I even recorded one to listen to it later... when I was drawing.

Only 46Mb but what a game! I spend a lot of time on this game and when a friend come to my house, we play this game instead of an other! And I have last resort, view point, pulstar and blazing star!

according to me here is how I order them:

1)Alpha mission 2

2)Pulstar
3)View point
4)blazing star
5)last resort
6)ghost pilot

:o

While I'm a Shooter nut, I don't own too many shooters for the NEO. I'd have to say that Blazing Star is my favourite, followed by Alpha Mission II. Last Resort I will never re-own as I stated in another thread, and Pulstar as good as the game is... I don't know, I just can't get the groove for it is all.

I'm just hoping to see a Blazing Star II in the near future, but since fighting games seem to be all anyone wants to play anymore (with the exception of Metal Slug) I guess I'd have a better chance of seeing a brand new shooter by RED for the PCE Duo.

No one mentions the Aero Fighters series;

Are they rough? They're the one series I dont remember EVER playing, even in the arcades on MVS.

Strikers 1945 Plus is the best shooter I've played on the Neo. Much better than Blazing Star or Pulstar IMO.

Runner up is Aerofighters 2.

What's THAT supposed to mean? And why did you reply to this thread if you didn't have a damn thing to say about Neo-Geo shooting games? Hmmmmmm?

Anyways, the Aero Fighters games. Part 2 is longer (10 levels), part 3 only has 8 levels, most of which are a LOT shorter than the average shooter. However, there's multiple paths through the game so there's a lot of levels to see. Part 2 is also a lot harder than 3, but personally I think 3 is more fun. The music in both games is really nothing special.

How I personally rank Neo-Geo shooters:

1. Pulstar
2. Blazing Star
3. Strikers 1945 Plus
4. Last Resort
5. Aero Fighters 3
6. Prehistoric Isle 2
7. Zed Blade
8. Aero Fighters 2
9. Andro Dunos
10. Viewpoint (never could get into it)
11. Captain Tomaday
12. Ghost Pilots

It's better if you watch your damn mouth because it smells like bull shit.........

Anyway, I used to have some Neo shooters but sold them all in the past two years.

I'll list the games I've played and ranked:

1) Pulstar
2) Last resort
3) Aero fighter 2
4) Zed Blade
5) Alpha Mission 2
6) Andro Dunos
7) Ghost Pilots

Oh, you were being sincere. Well, I would apologize, but after that "bull shit" remark...

Looks like I forgot about Alpha Mission 2. That game really didn't do anything for me either. It had a nice idea with the weapon system and all that but it really wasn't all that much fun at the time.

Sorry, but I could not disagree more.

Nothing is more unsatisfying than a game that doesn't have an ending!

You can play that game infinitely! It just keeps looping the levels over and over.

For that reason, I rank this game REALLY low in the neo-shooter ranks.

Ninja Commando.

Shooter at heart, never talked about, and pseudo-sequel to the almighty Ninja Combat.

Great game.

Someone already said Ghost Pilots, so I second that one.

...And Shock Troopers. Sooo much better than MERCS it's actually pretty funny.

(just thought I'd add more fuel to the BBH vs. LS fire... :D )
