Collect Japanese or English

I've been playing MVS for some years now and I've finally decided to start collecting AES. I want to start by getting all the new material. So right now I’m concerned with the future and current released such as Sengoku 3, MS 3, and KOF 2001.

My problem is, I don’t know which is better to collect, Japanese or English. I would prefer English for several reasons. However, my greatest fear is that, since the US Neo isn’t supported as much as the Japanese, they will eventually release new carts like ROTD and SNK vs. Capcom for Japanese but not English and then I would be forced to have half English and half Japanese. Is this even a possibility, or do you think it is quarantined to have a US release if there is a Japanese one?

I also don’t understand why, if the US releases are limited to 500 or so, do the Japanese ones sell so quickly and it is still easy to get the English ones. Are the Japanese versions more collectable for some reason?

So, why do you guys collect the ones you do?

Any advice would help me a lot,

Thanks!

The japanese carts have a much better insert design. That's why some people prefer them over the US ones.
On the other hand the US carts come with an english manual providing you with story and gameplay information you'll not be able to get from the japanese manual until you're familiar with the language.
But some carts only exist in the JP version which will make a hardcore-US collection look crappy ;)
I collect both...I don't care if I get a US or JP version of the game I buy.
Since the numbers of US carts produced are lowering there might be a possibility that the future releases are JP only.

I collect US, in the case of a good game unreleased here, I'll buy the Japanese version, this way, I don't need to pickup Quiz Chibbi Deluxe. =p

MVS versions for the unreleased versions obviously. =)

I collect english carts and if your just starting to collect carts I would go with the japanese version.I say this because the prices of some of the newer or rare English carts are pretty expensive.

Ex)Garou:MOTW,any Metal Slug besides 3.

From experience in collecting JPN, US, and NGF, I would say collect JPN, becasue there is always a JPN version.

I collect Jap carts becasue I love the insert, and it's damn easy to get.

The other reason is I prefer seeing Jap alphabet than normal English al.

I plan to buy whichever version I can get cheaper. Sure, I'd prefer the American versions, being that they're in English and all, but I'm not willing (nor able) to dish out so much cash for some when I can get the same thing cheaper.

As long as I'm able to get the games I want, who cares what language they're in?

I prefer English carts. Don't even worry about Japanese games. All future releases will be in English thanks to the support of Shawn. English games are sometimes more expensive because some of them are more rare than the japanese versions.

If you are a true gamer (like me), the sort of person that buy the cart just to play it, then get the Jap version, coz US version (older games) are more expensive.

If you are half gamer/collector, then try to get the US version!

The US carts and Jap carts are Identical except for the sticker. So there will be regional lock out even if you play Jap carts on a US system.
Jap system no regional lock out for US or Jap carts

All my Carts are Japanese. I prefer JPN artwork, as many people in these forums.

I prefer US AES carts, primilary because I'm a console gamer and collector. I buy imports only if the price is awesome and/or it is not available stateside in a U.S. version. That's just my personal preferences based upon my collecting standards of enjoyment.

However, since hanging out at these forums for quite a while (about a year almost), and noticing how others collect given availablilty and market prices....... I just might have to go to my local arcade auction and pick up a 4-slot MVS cabinet and some MVS carts in the future...

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. Is there or isn't there regional lockout? I'm getting a Japanese system and and there are quite a few American carts I want. I assumed I could play Japanese, Euro, or American carts without any problems.

I collect both of them.

for ex.
AoF-Series JPN
AoF-Series US
KoF94 - 2001 JPN...

Most US-Releases are more worth, but the JPN Artwork looks much better... :)

Melf:

Rest easy, your system, regardless of Jp or US, will play all Neo-Geo games, there's no such thing as regional lockout on Neo-Geo, one reason we all love this system for so long. So, if you get US carts, it'll display Jp on your Jp system, newer games will also give you option of displaying English.

On the main topic, I personally prefer Jp version anytime over US. The artwork of the inserts is one of the reason I collect NG games. However, few titles are actually easier and cheaper to get in US (actually much easier and cheaper) so I settle for mint US copy, ie: Ninja Commando, Viewpoint, Andro Dunos. (these games' insert colors are pretty common anyway)
