I have been playing this game alot recently, and although it is awkward when you first pick it up, it's a blast to play when you figure it out. I was thinking that a new version of KOTM would be really nice. So I was wondering, does anyone else find this game underrated? Or am I just getting some cheap thrills a little too late?

Hey man, it's never too late.

I enjoyed KOTM and had more than my fair shares of play with it. If you can find someone that appreciates the game as much as you do, it's a BLAST.

Part 2 was totally different... and not as good as part one, IMO.

King of the Monsters is pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Basically there's a little "pattern" that once you get down, you can finish the game on one credit with a little luck. Only works with Geon and Astro Guy though, I think. Too lazy to explain it now, but if anyone's interested...

Does it go like this?

Weaken the monster down. Knock him down. Charge your special and as soon as he gets up, unleash it. If it hits him correctly he will fall back down. Repeat until he is extremely weak.

Pin him once. He'll kick out. Repeat formula above.

Then pin him again. He'll kick out, repeat formula above.

On the 3rd pin he should be beaten 1-2-3.

Am I on the right track?

Mostly. But it's weakening him that's the tough part. :) It's best to get either above or below them, then push C then A to do a dash attack to knock them down. If you can get close to them in time, push B to pick them up. If you do manage to pick 'em up into a hold, 95% of the time you will have priority, so just mash either Down+A or Up+A. This will yield a Power item. As the throw's being performed though, start holding down A+B to charge the power move, but don't release it immediately... let them stand up, and they'll go into their "exhausted" pose. You can nail them then. Sometimes you can keep a chain going in which you can continually hit them with the charge moves, but not often.

Almost. I think the first three opponents, the first time you try to pin when they have no life bar, they will kick off. The second time you pin them they won't be able to get up. The next two (or three? I need to double-check this) will throw you off after the second pin too, and then on the third pin they will stay down. After that, you have to pin them FOUR times to beat them... I want to say this starts on Stage 7 when you fight everyone all over again, but I have a feeling it's Stage 6 instead.

It's important to know this because if you're going for a really high score, you'll want to pin them either once, twice, or three times ASAP... and then not pin them the last time until the timer is almost up, so you can use the rest of the time getting more points on them. Kinda risky though...

Part 2 seems to be more of a jpn dedication, old movies, etc...like 8man, etc..
But i think that KING of Monsters was and still is one of the best games for the system.
And entire battle field of destructable things, good size sprites(nothing to large, like how the begun to get in KOM2), and shitloads of fun with a friend. :D :D :D :D :D

IMO

KOTM was the game that brought me to getting a Neo back in 1991. For many years afterwards my only games were KOTM and Magician Lord. So I've played KOTM a lot.

What is the ultimate KOTM strategy?

Simple: Pick Beetle Mania and flip, flip, flip your way to victory. It's almost too easy with that strategy.

I was just about to post a topic asking what were effective King of the Monsters strategies and how to peform the charged special moves, but the search button cleared it all up for me.

I've never played the first one, but I have the second one for SNES. My mom bought it for me in a game store when I was about nine years old. Both of us used to play the game together. We never beat it, but we got really close to it. It was the first SNK game I've ever played.
