Been collecting vintage master of the universe action figures lately and immediately noticed that the lack of a price guide does encourage a steep price escalation for rare pieces.
I was after in particularspecial giftset called battle for eternia.
I knew it was very rare but didn't know right amount to offer to get it,then I asked some experienced masters of the universe action figure collectors and they told me it is worth around $1500 or so.
That prevented me from bidding over $2000 to try to win it.
Have a look:
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1923677378" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1923677378</a>
And I could single out more and more MOTU inflated auctions, where bidders bid just too much not knowing real market value of the toys.
Now,if we look at the neo geo collecting and playing scene,we got a quite clear picture of the price but ,AND THAT is the most important thing, even a newbie won't pay $400 for a world heroes perfect japanese or $3000 for a Metal slug 1 jap.
Infact a lot of newbies are entering the neo geo market, especially the local market(i.e. NOT internet market) and they can have immediately an idea of correct price for each home cart.
So,all those taking shots at the price guides should realize that the guide is just a guide.
Feel the price is just too high?Don't pay it and be happy.
BUT,and it is a big BUT,all benefit of the guide shows up clear when it is used by newbies to avoid getting ripped off or cheated.
Usefulness can be found also for not experienced sellers, who will not have bad sales due to ignorance of real market price.
Finally,2 thoughts for 2 members.
Cole:comparing toys to videogames is really fitting the situation since they are both COLLECTIBLE item, nothing more, nothing less.
To play a game, and just to play, you can be content with a loose MVS cart(even a bottleg)or a loose home cart.
Garou-d: I do appreciate your long and well constructed posts about deleting the price guide.
If you feel it's price guide 's fault if price of some home carts are high,YOU can hit the market.
Follow this simple lines:
SELL YOUR BEAUTIFUL SLUG 1 home cart for $100 or 500,as you feel better.
I WILL update the price guide, lowering a bit Metal slug's quote basing the update on your sale.
Thanks in advance for your help.
