Joystick...or No Joystick?

What's your pleasure?

I hate joysticks, just because I haven't been 'raised' on them. I'm about 9,000 times better at any given fighting game with a pad...it's just true.

Motions are easy for me to master with the joystick, its just that my character seems less mobile. Pads are a godsend for me.

How many of you use the CDPad? Or have mod-ed other controllers to work with your Neo because you just can't use the joystick?

Joystick when Im standing up, pad, if I am laying down or something.

In MOTW and KOF especially, where rolling and breaking are important, you just need the stick.

When I use a pad, I have 2 custom modded Sega Genesis Six Button pads.

The pad is mostly relegated to shooters and Metal Slug.

I'm quite adept with both, but again, if you want to truly be a competetive fighter, it's the stick...I just need to be standing up.

When I first got the Neo-Geo, I sucked big tyme with the joystick. After that, I bought the CD pad off Ebay. But, after awhile, I used the stick more and I got better wit' it, and now I use the stick because it's easier to block and run with a stick then it is with a pad. I used to use the pad because I grew up using a gamepad because I use to play NES, SNES, and Genesis using a pad. Now, I use the stick, I am much better at fighting games. But, for platform games and airplane shooters, gamepads are better.

I use CD pads with my MVS/Supergun setup. I have an old style Neo stick (as well as the MAS sticks) but I rarely use it.

For years I was all about the D-Pad, I really couldn't figure out why people would rather use joysticks. Then when I got my first Neo it came with 2 gold sticks and Samurai Shodown and I was like "Fuck this, I can't play this game with these damn joysticks" and I promptly snagged some CD pads. It wasn't until I picked up my MVS cab in June that I really became accustom to using the joystick. I took me a couple of weeks to master the old Forward/Down/Down Forward but now I have it down pat but now I can pull off all the motions silky smooth. Its funny how things change because now I really don't like playing without a joystick.

Joystick all the way. Preferably the newer SNK CD joystick. The old style is cool too, but the buttons have a really "hollow" sound that can get annoying after awhile.

The CD pad is awful. The mini stick has way too much travel to be effective. Avoid at all costs!

I can go either way, although my preference is the stick. Always seemed more natural to me using a stick than using the pad.

Joy stick all the way. I believe it provides more concise control, plus I like using four fingers for ABCD.

I use a joystick for fighters.
CD pad for any other type of games.

I think the old-style Joystick is the best for fighters and shooters, it offers a more precise control over the character and makes you feel the arcade experience in the purest way! :D

I really prefer the old style one.
IMHO the new type seems like a toy comparing it to the old type. what do you think about it?

I use the Joystick for all the games i play.
The joystick brings out the true feeling of the Neo.

I didn't know there was another way to play a fighting game, besides with a joystick.

Then again, I grew up in the arcade/atari 2600 generation.

I prefer the old-style joystick, it has better control than the new-style joystick. New-style joystick is too small for me.

I'm like KA, I grew up playing video games at home and not in the arcade, so I'm a pad boy.

But recently I've been getting into the idea of playing competitively at some of the arcades here (esp. now that SVC is out), so if I want to do that I have to learn how to handle my stick.

Looks like i'm in this boat too. I love pads, but i just built joystick for use with my supergun and i have been enjoying using it. Pads are just more comfortable i think.

I like pads better.
I can do moves and hit buttons allot faster on a pad than any joystick.
Probably because you need to move the joystick much further than a pad.

I started to use joysticks when I had my first MSX computer; curiously hanged the stick with my right hand at the time. Then I had to get used to use my left hand, no problem.

Then, I got used so much to pads (Damn PSX and the like) and now, because of that and the way I am sited when playing videogames I use the pad to play my neo games. It is very uncomfortable to play with the stick on your laps when you are sited on a chair with armrests.

The pad is nice with many games but with the fighting games the Joystick is the best way to go, you get more advantage of this type of games with it, besides performing the B+C combination with the pad is a hell of a mess. I should go back to the stick...

I like to use Neo Hori sticks with my MVS system. They just feel really great and I find it easier to playwith than a pad.

Someone explain to me why "to be a serious contender" I have to use a joystick?

Just curious; if someone could explain why I'd appreciate it.

I'm not sure if you're talking about stick vs pad elitism... I think that's what you're referring to... if so then that elitism doesn't matter, a kick-ass player still kicks ass whether he's using a pad or a stick.

Unfortunately arcade cabs use sticks, and I'm not a very good stick player, when I go to the arcade I can't pull off the moves I want, get owned, and am therefore not a serious contender.

When I was a kid I wanted OH SO BAD for there to be a little plug for my SNES controller at the SS2turbo cab :(

Virtua Fighter was the first game I was really good at with a joystick in the 'cades. Probly because it was so much slower...

Either way, what I meant was that I saw Rade up above say that to be a serious contender you need to play with a joystick. I'm not calling him a liar, I'm just curious as to why. There's probly a reason.
