whey hey!
guess what kids?
Dave Halverson, the long time editor of gamefan
before ECM, and short lived editor of Gamers Republic
is back with a new gaming mag!
the name of it is Play and i found one at
my local EBs for bout 5-6 bucks.
so far its in its 3rd issue.
the second one had a gunvalkrie cover which i picked up
before they were off of newstands and picked up the new one
with superman on the cover at Ebs.
it has really nice big shots of game art in it and
coverage of what would probably be considered more
niche' kind of games.
except it covers more like movies, anime, figures and what have you that may be related.
id just wanted to share this with you guys
i really like this mag and suggest that you guys
give it a look if you got the time.
i feel pretty sad because looking through the mag
you ll see that Dave written 85%-90% of the reviews in the mag so you know the man hasnt been
sleeping for a few months.
please check it out.
i like the reviews too of course, Dave having a like
mind as mine i like to think when it comes to gaming...
i miss old school gamefan and gamersrepublic too.
dont dam us to PSM and gamePro for the rest of our lives.
check it out.

You're kidding! I'll be visiting my local EB to buy a copy for sure! Who else is writing for Play? Do you recognize anyone else from the original Gamefan?

Seeing as how the current gaming magazine scene is in a sorry state, it is really a blessing to get Play. I have all three issues, and the quality is far beyond anything else out there. This goes for layout and design as well as paper stock and quality. These guys will always give true gamer's perspective, and I really trust there opninions. Usually, if they say a game is good - they're right. Anyway, just my two cents...but definately go out and get a copy. Great mag!

I have to agree with rare here. The mag rocks. Personally I loved Gamers Republic and this is the closest thing I have found to it... and it's damn good.

They also have a large section for anime reviews and previews. Definitly check it out. Should be able to find it at GameStop/Funco fairly easily.

Does anyone know what's up with the websight? Is it just me, or is there not really any websight at all? It just seems to be a page(that hasn't been updated) on how to subscribe and win a contest. If you know anything, let us know!

Yeah, this new magazine is great. I recently noticed it at Barnes and Noble and picked it up (and realize people that I NEVER buy game magazines). It's really good, reminds of how NextGen (sniff, sniff...hold back the tears) was when it first started: new and refreshing.

Support it. Wouldn't want to see another game publication go down the drain.

Now all we need is someone who likes hardcore gaming and will actually give a pointed, CONSTRUCTIVE review instead of fuckin' fluff.
Dave Halverson is NOT the man for that job.
GameFan has a way overblown 'legend'...just because they covered good games did NOT make it a good magazine, with their shoddily written reviews and absolute BULLSHIT "news" articles that were at best the great grandaddy of IGN-quality scoops. When you think about GameFan, you must remember that those folks started that magazine as a glorified sales catalog for their now long-defunct import game store (DieHard Gamer's Club in Tarzana, CA). Believe me, if you knew anyone who ever actually wrote for that magazine and had to deal with that prick, you wouldn't have that same kind of adulation for him that many gamers seem to have. GameFan wasn't fit hold the OLD Electronic Gaming Monthly's jockstrap. The old EGM (1989-1994 aka the Steve Harris/Ed Semrad era) will always remain the finest game mags of all time.

As an aside to what I just wrote, I don't mean any of that as a personal insult to any members...I totally understand the desire for a good print magazine. I'd love to have one to read on a regular...there still is something to be said for seeing killer screenshots on paper.
Don't put your faith in The Mullet though.

Yeah a new good gaming magazine I used to pick up Gamer republic when I found a copy...I just love gaming magazines that area bit more then gaming. Did anyone read incite gamer...a very close friend of my brother was one of thier writers and I had a free subscritption for like ever....well until they stoped putting it out like 6-7 issue's in then i got a free game-pro(ick) for like 2 years. I saw Play at media-play and at barnes and noble's book store i'll have to pick it up.

Couldn't agree more. I appreciated the stuff they covered (even in the ECM era), but a lot of there reviews and previews (especially in the ECM era) were all over the place...

Judging from the first few issues of Play, though, this *won't* be carrying the torch for Gamefan/Gamego/Republic. Very little import/old school coverage to be found. A lot of "fluff" reviews and a lot of interviews that could be good if they tried to go for some depth instead of sounding like a press release with 2 people talking...

Indeed Nick. You know damn well these guys could never get a job at a magazine they weren't bankrolling. A love of games and a high school education does NOT mean you can write well about video games.
