How long does it take you to fully appreciate a new Neo Game you buy?

For me, it varies.

For KoF '99, it took me up to 6 months to really get into it.

I am just now starting to appreciate KoF 2k.

I have a feeling it will take time to get into KoF 2k1.

It took about 3 weeks to really get into Samurai IV. (After Verbatum showed me a few combos and explained the gauge system- thanks Verbatum!)

With Metal Slug 3, I was very impressed at first, but got bored with it after awhile. Now I am very enamored with it again.

What about the rest of you?

I know what you mean. I'm the same way with most of my games. I got 2k1 right when it came out. Loved it at first and played through a few times. Then neglected it for the other KOFs I have and didn't play it for about a week. Now I'm starting to get into again and am loving it. I think it takes awhile for the system to "click in" and for me to kind of "absorb" the game. It's strange, but I know what you mean.

One week- that's all it took for me to fully appreciate King of Fighters '98.

Five days- that's all it took for me to fully appreciate Money Idol Exchanger.

Five minutes- that's all the time I spent playing Aggressors of Dark Kombat in a local arcade back in 1995; never played it again (I wouldn't even touch a minty-fresh AES cart if offered one; never had any appreciation for it, never will).

Right now, I am playing some serious KOF 95'. I've always appreciated that game, and it's one of the few series that I can play literally years after it's release, and still respect.

I agree. Although my preference for gameplay leans towards KOF '98, KOF '95 (to this day) had the best backgrounds, music, and even intro. I want to buy a mint version of that game to get it back. A game for hardcore fighting fans without all the specials of the later versions. Truly a classic.

And as for the topic at hand, it depends on my mood. I love my Neo for the instant thrills it gives me. Games that keep me playing for hours, though, are more story based. Such as the Resident Evil series. I guess my attention span isn't what it used to be.

Within a week i usually stop playing neo games now, infact most i get bored with before then but i am old. in the good old days i use to play games like ff2 and shodown 2 for yeats and not get bored. as with kof2001 now i have beaten it with 6 teams so far and once i do it with other 4 i might play a few more games every now and then but thats it. i get into games virtually the same day i get them.

It doesn't take me long at all (only a few playing sessions) to tell if I'm going to like a new Neo-Geo game.

Depends on the game, you know? Fighters, for me at least, have greater depth that sometimes takes longer to crack. But a shooter, like Blazing Star, will be over pretty quickly. Having said that, I still play Blazing Star quite a lot :D

Yeah I agree with that too - although there are some Neo Geo games that I get SO into that I'll be on them for hours. Mostly though, I'll get home and just whack the MVS on for an hour to relieve some stress :)

I think Agressor's of the Dark Kombat is one of the best games ever created for the Neo Geo. I 1st purchased this game back in 94' and could'nt appreciate it because I did'nt know all of the moves and could'nt appreciate being able to move about a full playfield...not to mention KOF 94' was the CRAZE around this time and EVERYBODY including myself was heavily into that.

It took me 6 years to get into KOF95.
I played KOF95 when it first came out in arcade and I thought it's cool.

Then I bought Neo CD version and hated it so much.
Hate that foreground/background shit.....

That's the reason I don't like Fatal Fury series for the past 10 years.

After I bought AES version, I change my mind...
It's fun to play between foreground/background...

Don't ask me why....Now I love FF series and KOF95

I would say it varies alot. I just got my CD-system and i don't have an aes och mvs. But i've played alot neo on neorage. That was the thing that got me into these games.

Anyway, the first game i played on the neo was breakers revenge, and i was hooked. Cool moves, nice grapichs and some good characters.

When i started to explore KOF, Samsho and the other big names on neo i was blown away. Everything was so cool. But i always played the latest version of all the games.

Now, after about a year of neogeo-playing. I'm starting to get into the old games, like KOF 94-96 and stuff like that. And i can say that i really love these series now.

Before it was just cool, now it's an obbsession. I also got the rank Master fighter on Real Bout Special today. That made me love the game even more, Geese is really cool in that game. I lost, but i'll beat him someday.

SNK fighters is full of details, thats what makes you wanna play them again. I notice something new almost every day, a new victory pose, a new combo, even a small detail in the background.

I got the same feeling about Neo games ...

take MotW for example - the first month I didn`t like it too much, too difficult, couldn`t handle
Just defended, T.O.P. etc. but after another 2 months I really loved the game.

Same with `00: So la la after the first weeks but meanwhile I`m coming back at it at least once every week.

It really depends on the game with fighters having the longest "incubation" time :)

Perhaps that is more accurate than instant thrills. My favorite stress relief medicine is Neo games. BTW, love your reviews, shame that your not a football fan. Perhaps your Super Sidekicks reviews might have been a little less personal. (and here I though everyone in the UK loved football)

I have had a very small taste of NG (a Pocket Color and 3 games) but with that little tasty nugg I have come to appreciate everything that SNK has put out, past present and future! Rock on Jables. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

Like everyone else said, it depends on the game. The longest time it took me to get into a game was real bout 2. It was the third neo geo game I had bought, and I was new to the series, so I didn't appreciate the 3 attack button, 1 plane shift button too much. I was going to sell it after just one day of playing, but, fortunately for me, everyone kept telling me good it was, so i kept at it. AFter about a month, I realized how great the game was, and to this day it's one of my fav fighters. It was a similar story with kof98 (now my fav fighter of all time), although I always liked it, it just took time for me to realize how great it really is. Some games however, like the slugs, pulstar, blazing star, and magical crack, erm drop, 3 I loved as soon as the gameplay started. Just depends on the game I guess.
