Well, I started this topic in other gaming site and I guess this is Neo-Geo related, before you reply, please read a bit more about it here

<a href="http://pub10.ezboard.com/fretrogamingclassicvideogaming.showMessage?topicID=3548.topic" target="_blank">http://pub10.ezboard.com/fretrogamingclassicvideogaming.showMessage?topicID=3548.topic</a>

So, the current contenders and runner ups

Neo-Geo AES (need I say more)
Game Boy
Atari 2600
Commodore 64 (Europe/Australia)
Sega Master System (Brazil)

Geez, that is really hard. True that GB has went through many forms. I think it's a runner up between GB, Neo Geo, and 2600. I don't know about the SMS, but correspondence has said it did extremely well down in South America. But wasn't most of the C-64 stuff as of late, 'homebrew' such as some of the late stuff as the 2600?

But if you drop all face lifts aside, it's between the 2600 and the Game Boy. Don't forget that the 2600 sort of went through a face lift too: the 7800 played 2600 games, except for 3.

Neo Geo.

SNK is still trying to regroup in Korea, and folks like E. Kawasaki want to make it still run.

GB disqualified itself by going color, IMO.
Commodore itself isn't around anymore. I consider that to be a necessary factor. So that kills the 2600 too.
I've seen some Brazillian knock offs of the SMS. I would need to know if Sega has actually helped out.

Neo Geo has stayed true to its form, with no revisions to the hardware specs for years and years... Game Boy is in constant revision, new processor, color screen, etc, etc... That disqualifies it in my book and really makes it many smaller, but still successful systems. Neo Geo is by far the longest running unchanged system that still has plenty of first party (and third, I don't know who is who anymore) support. What else is there, The 2600 really doesn't count does it? That was killed by Atari and no real support has happend for it for years and years (I don't think homebrews count, but that is just me).

I agree.

"Atari" is nothing more than a name that's being bought and sold. Since Commodore is also long-kaput, you can consider the C64 in the same boat (and its doubly eliminated for being a computer).

The only chance is based on actual Sega support for the Sega SMS. Althought from what I guess it's success in Brazil was probably some kind of weird situation.

Ha, I remember this same topic on unrelated? like well over a yr ago. If someone wants to drag that post up?

And for the record, I think Sega brands, in general, did better and lasted longer in South America (esp Brazil?) than other countries/continent.

My opinion? Alot of people are making valid comments, but too me, it's kind of moot point. Why? It's because Neo Geo will--if not already is--be the longest running system as the software support is not dead yet... Well, GBA or whatever it's incarnation will obviously last longer, but that's an argument that I am not going to dispute.

Actually, I take it back. To those who consider GB to be the longest running system...Do you guys consider PS 1 & PS 2 same? I don't consider PS 1 and PS 2 system to be the same system, even though PS 2 can play most PS 1 games--some components maybe the same, but there is just too much diff in hardware. Using the same comparison, GBA can't be considered the same system as a GB. So the winner is Neo Geo, IMO.

Well, I've mentioned that Game Boy lives on if, and only if Nintendo and other 3rd parties continue to publish Game Boy Color games that can be played on original b/w Game Boy, there're still a number of GBC games coming out (though very few, about one game a month), Game Boy's lifespan will end when last Game Boy compatible GBC game comes out.

Same goes for PSX, PS2 will not count but look at the last PSX game release, I'll do more research on SMS and C64 also.

Yeah, Neo Geo is the longest running system......
And also the long-life money sucking machine....

Game prices range from $20 - $5000 +

I say that it is a close one between the Neo-Geo and the Atari Lynx...

The Lynx came out in '89 and it still has (or had as of a year ago or so) games put out for it by 3rd party companies. Am I wrong?

Definitely the Neo-Geo takes the cake by a considerable margin because it still plays host to official arcade releases around the world. How many other 12 year-old hardware platforms can make this lofty claim? Arcades usually feature the latest new-fangled 3-D technology and despite this the Neo-Geo more than adequately competes. These are MVS releases that are very successful I might add, attracting many fans. The Neo-Geo possesses this intangible magic that appeals to people of every generation including young kids who you'd think wouldn't be sold on the whole "antiquated" 2D thing. With future arcade and home releases already planned I think there's no doubt about this one, Neo-Geo wins by a mile.
