Hi, ive wanted a Neo-Geo of some sort for ages now, trouble is... which one! Theres many different variations, AES, MVS, CD.
So which should i go for? Im not made of money but i do want to be able to play the likes of Garou, KOF'99/2k and MS3. Could anyone tell me the pros/cons of each system?
Im a UK resident so what kind of mods need to be made?
I was thinking of using a "Supergun" system (www.ravengames.co.uk) to play the MVS games but this would mean buying a one slot aswell.
Any tips you guys?

I think you can get those answers from archives in any forums but let me try to help you a little bit:

You said you don't make money but want to play games like Garou, KOF'99/2k and MS3....
Man, those games aren't cheap plus you are a newbie......hmmm. Just want you to know that in order to fully enjoy Neo Geo and become a Neo gamer is time and money consuming. I think you'd better start saving $$ and get yourself an AES system, buy used games from videogame stores, our selling forum, Shawn's Neo store or Ebay if you can. Once you have enough $$, buy new carts or even MVS machine (or supergun).
Neo CD is quite cheap but game loading time is horrible. Get one and collect those reasonable CD games if you don't mind.
Also you can use Shawn's AES price and CD price guide as references.
Here are the pros/cons for each system:
1) AES pros - arcade identical,
cons - cartridge costs too much
2) CD pros - arcade identical, re-mixed music
, games are cheaper to get
cons - horrible loading time, CD will scratch easily, re-mixed music, gamepad not as good as Neo stick when using in fighting games.
3) MVS pros - you are buying arcade! nuff say, games are cheaper than AES
cons - you need PCB board, cabint(optional), Supergun and so on, you might get a beta game (that's sux), and less options than AES/CD versions

That's all I know.
P.S. To My dear fellas, please add more info if needed. Thanks

Yikes! Silent, i said "im not made of money" not that i dont get any! I have an income, but lets just say... it cant all go on this system.
You say you don't get as many options on MVS... that i was unaware of.
Thanks for the details, any more from yourself or anyone else would be great.

I only own a cartridge system. So I don't know all the cons and pros of a CD version. But I have studied up on the Neo on-line and know a few things that matter to me. The cartridges are expensive, no denying that, but some can be had for as cheap as $35! That's fantastic for a Neo game. As far as the CD systems go, CD's have better music. They are remixed though, which means you don't get the arcade music. Some Neo games feature annoying music, some are good. CD's do scratch easily, they're not GD-ROMS, or DVD's, they're plain CD's which are susceptible to damaging marks with little or no effort at making them. Also, the CD systems feature NO musical light shows. If you wanna hear a music CD you won't get any virtual eye candy along with it. That sucks in my opinion. CD's are cheaper than cartridges, but cartridges last longer. If it was me, I'd get a cart system over a CD system. I am very pleased with my cart system, and since I got mine early in its life I have the original joysticks too. I think my replacement system uses comes packed with the new lightweight joysticks... but I haven't used my replacement system yet. Load times tend to suck big time! If you wanna run to the kitchen and grab a beer or roll a joint between every round then the CD system is for you, but I don't play games that take forever to load up. The joypads are better than the Genesis pads, but not as good as SNES ones (the joypads for the CD system). The joysticks for the cart system are heavy, sturdy, and durable. You can't buy a better joystick. Period.

MY ADVICE: Get a Neo-Geo Gold System today!!
