Does anyone remember if Neo Geo was ever used in rentals? Now, I know no place would rent it, but when it first came out, did anybody ever seen a store that rented it out?

I remember reading somewhere that the original intent of the NG was to rent it out.

I can't see how this is feasible. Usually when you rent out systems, you need to leave a deposit for the cost of the system. Not to many people would/could leave a $600+ deposit for that system and its 2 games.

...as I remember, the Neogeo was born as a "rental machine" in Japan...

...then SNK decided to start selling it...

Yes, mitsuagi is right. The NeoGeo was for rent only in the first year after the initial release in Japan and the USA.
SNK made a good decision in releasing it for worldwide sale. :)

I know one place up in North Jersey that rented it out. Little mom & pop rental store. they sold off the stock afterwards at depressingly cheap prices. :(

In Italy, back in '92/'93, the official Neo importer founded a club, whose members could rent AES carts to play...

Video Town here in the Midwest, and especially the one near my house in Indiana had it because my brother was the regional director before Blockbuster bought them out and I told him to rent it.

Back in hmm, maybe 91 or early 92, i lived in a small town (40000 ppl, including all suburbs). There was a small game rental store there which was very popular at that time, and they rented the neo-geo with baseball stars and blue's journey. My friends rented it once and we played the whole day. We recorded the games on their vcr. We watched the tape every now and then as a souvenir of the neo-geo. I remember wanting one, but i was a kid and my father thought i already had too many games... so no expensive game console for me...

A little place in Flint that did, um, other business on the side, rented them and the games out. They also did a ton of B-rated movies, anime, and 'mature audience' flicks. Word is he got robbed and shut down literally overnite.

The place was called Bob Updike's. I rented several old school games from there to check them out. Pitty he never got anything newer then kof94.
It was a cool store. He had import saturn, PSX, and DC games there too :)

Yeah, good old Bob's. But no one can get the story right, so I'm not sure if he was actually robbed or threatened. All I know is that I went to rent a video one night, and he was gone. Kinda makes me wish I had checked out some of the Neo stuff.

In Germany we couldn´t rent Games for the "Neo-Geo", but there were a few stores, where you could lease them, or pay in parts for it...
