Who recommends a MAS Super Nova? And why? Is it sturdy?

Well, I am thinking about getting rid of my CDZ and CD Collection and I want to buy a MAS Super Nova and want to know if it is worth it. Is it sturdy and very well built? Will I like it better then my CDZ? Let me know!

Thanks!

If I were you,I would build it myself or commission somebody in the tech area to build one for me.
The bulky MAS setup is such an illussion.
It's like 75% heavy particle board staple gunned together & 25% essential.
You will defiitely enjoy the MVS or Home format equally if not more than the CD for obvious reasons..NO load times, larger library, exact translation.

Thanks BB! I would build one myself, but have no skill that way. In fact, I am just finishing re-modeling my bathroom and finally learned carpentry, plumbing, and laying tile. :) I guess I will pass on the MAS Super Nova, since everyone seems down on it. I just love my CDZ, but want to play MS3, MS4, MS5, Sengoku3, PI2, and NITD. Thanks!

I was thinking of getting a Super Nova too. So basically, IT SUCKS!!! eek! I thought it was pretty dependable and reliable.

I have a MAS Super Nova. It is sturdy. It is dependable. Like BB said, only 25% of it is needed, BUT regardless of that fact, it works and it works well. I've had mine 1.5 yrs now and haven't had any problems with it.

If you only want to play Neo, talk to Supergoose on the boards and see if you can get him to build you a consolized MVS.

If you want to be able to play more than that, either buy the MAS or go with one someone off of here built. I have a Neo and a Hyper Neo Geo 64. Originally I bought it only for Neo, but since the HNG64 is JAMMA and SamSho 64 is so damn cool, I bought it!

Thanks, this is really helping me make up my mind. I would much rather have a cab, but no one seems to want to ship and no one has one down here in FL. And all I want to play is Neo games. Thanks!

Then you'd be best to speak with the members who have done consolized MVS units, such as SuperGoose whose name I've already given you. Of course, with something like that you'd still need to buy Neo controllers, so look to spend another $100 for 2 old style sticks, plus whatever it costs to buy the consolized MVS.

Another alternative is to buy an AES and a Phantom-1. Downside to this is the fact that not all games are compatible with the Phantom-1. Probably 95% of the games are at this point, so it's not as bad as it seems.

This will likely run you $150 (unmodded, at more $$$ if modded) for the AES and another $200+ for the Phantom-1 if you can find it at that price. For $300 you can have Super Nova. You'd still have to buy the Neo board for that though, so you are looking at around $400 at least going that route. Thr consolized MVS will likely run you $200 or more, plus the cost of controllers (unless you get someone to custom build some for you, then you're talking about even MORE money!). So assume the least you would spend would be $300.

Now, if you went straight AES, the problem you have is the cost of games. LB2 JPN AES=$275+. LB2 JPN MVS=$50. $225 difference. True, you get a pretty case, insert and manual, but it'd be in Jpanese. Can you read Japanese?

The route I went was Super Gun (Super Nova) and a 4 Slot Neo. I have since purchased, as stated above, a HNG64 with the 4 fighters. Personally I'd go the super gun route, just in case you ever wanted to play 3D SNK goodness.

The MAS unit is unnecessarily heavy and poorly constructed.I pulled one apart a few years back because it got damaged during shipping.
The most important part to any US/JPN Super Gun is the RGB to NTSC encoder. and the JROK fits the bill.

The best part about the MAS SuperNova is the controllers that come with it. The unit itself has some horrible outputs. When I first bought one, I took it apart to learn how it worked. I ended up replacing their RGB to NTSC converter with a jrok one, which is a whole lot better than theirs. The SuperNova is still good for anyone starting out. I like it a lot more than the HGA, that's for sure.

Yes, please stay away from the HGA from GW Trading. I don't know about the quality, but the guy running the place is a fucking joke.

I am also THINKING about replacing the RGB to NTSC converter in mine. How difficult was that project?

I have had several AES Systems and a few Phantom's. I would much rather stay away from that. Plus, AES is too much for me right now. I PM'ed Supergoose. Thanks!

I like my superNova, and although I have nothing to compare it to, it works great and has not given me any problems. It's also nice to be able to look at older games as well.

but yeah, it's BIG! lol and a pain to move around. The controllers are great though! I am making a couple superguns of my own with the JROK's. I am just waiting on parts now, then I can find a shell and get started.

IMO, if all you want is neo stuff, go for the supergun from someone around here....who knows, maybe in a couple months when I get better at this I can start selling them as well wink

Maybe I will wait then and let me know how you are doing building them and I will buy one off you. SuperGoose said he is not making them anymore right now. I can wait. Money is tight right now anyway. Thanks!
