what is better king of fighter 95 or king of fighter 96

96, no contest.
Diff'rent game really. I'd chose 95 just because It has the old school feel which I love dearly...and they gave Terry the Powerdunk. And the awesome soundtrack.
96 is swell to. Redesigned graphics, new characters.
Get both as they are not really comparible.
The best early kof is still 94 though.

95 sucks! Crap energy system, no freedom of movement, bent counter supers that usually end the round, the presence of billy kane.....god, how much crap can one cart hold......

buttrock Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari, Psycho Soldiers, Iori/Billy/Eiji theme songs are some of the fucking greatest KOF soundtracks ever.
This game is absolutelly tops.
I just dislike 96 in some details. the Energy bar is divided ( yuck ), and there's almost no character that throw full length projectiles.

You'll have way more fun with 96 in versus play than you would in 95, and honestly I just think that its far and away the better game.

96 is easily the better. the main thing it has over 95 is its refined fighting engine. runs, small jumps, rolls its all there. Its also the only KOF with the boss team. And it has better graphics. As far as backgrounds and music though, I like them both. To 95 benefit though, it does have Eiji.

Uh actually King of Fighters 1995 is an old school fighter hence why it probably doesn't suit a lot of people's taste.
If you got into the KOF around KOF 1998 which most people did, you'll never like 1995.
KOF 1996 does not have a "refined" engine. It's a different engine altogether. You can easily see the differences between the two, it's a little bit more than simply refining the fighting engine.
KOF 1995 has the best backgrounds out of any of the KOF games period. 1996 cannot even compete with the amount of detail in 1995. Just take a look at Neo Geo Land in KOF 1995. The detail is so intricate and precise.
If you sit down with 1995 and really play it, you'll find an incredible game in it. But most people are turned off from it because they think it sucks because it doesn't have the system that showed up in 1996 and beyond.
Whatever.
Dissing 1995 is ludicrous. The only fault the game has is the damage issue which was fixed in 1996. But even at that, I can overlook it because the game is has amazing control, a great line up, great BG's, great music, a great final boss, and so much more.
If you like 1996 more fine. But don't try and play off 1995 as inferior. The majority of people who say 1995 is not that good have never even played it.

Agreed. 95 is better than 96 in the areas described. 96 has better music in my opinion, but the backgrounds in 95 are a bit better. 96 has excellent BGs though. Not sure what happened in 97 with music and backgrounds, but honestly, it's more fun for me than 96 or 98 when I play solo.
But in essence, 95 is better than 96. From a competitive standpoint, the gameplay is just more tight than 96. Much more balanced for tournement play. And of course, there's Eiji.

Listen, both of these games are good, but both play way differently. The bad stuff in '96 was the fact that it played much like a Capcom game with the dragon punches and fireballs. Granted, it had advanced system, the boss team, and slightly better damage control, in KOF '95 if you were playing a master, you would not get very far. '96 you can hold your own with simple gameplay basics. '95 it requires you to work with the gameplay system in order to become somewhat formidable. I don't know if this makes any sense to people, but basically I'm saying '95 is harder to master than '96, despite the small upgrades that were made.
For these reasons, some people may prefer one over the other. A lot of people get turned off by '95 because they aren't used to it (like JHendrix). The game isn't "too old", hell it's only a year older than '96, eh? It's still a significant stepping stone in SNK's fighters and can be enjoyed on it's own merits.
*EDIT - Terry's team in KOF '95 has my favorite SNK bg and music to date (the arranged version just rules). Right up there with Sieger's bg/music.

Another vote cast for 95. Old school SNK fighting at its best. Superb animation, vivid backgrounds, great soundtrack, tight gameplay, challenging CPU and a solid cast of characters. 95 raised the standard for all KOFs to come.

Its not just because its older, id play 94 or 95 anyday. I guess you feel that just because your number is in the first 500 to join this forum that you are automatically an old school kof player and someone in the 7000 has only just started playing kof. Dear oh dear.
I do agree with the 95 back grounds being nice, ioris stage is lush!
