amazing what you can do in an afternoon/evening, eh? This is best viewed downloaded and in Notepad, or in a monospace font (there's quite a bit of ASCII art) as it doesn't display on that page wordwrapped (it's still readable but that's a lot of scrolling). Thanks to Briggs for hosting this!

Nice. I like the addition of Crouching Tiger, maybe that will stem the tide of topics regarding it (not likely, but a guy can hope).

Great work!
a really good start for new members.
Will it be in a more presentable layout in the near future?

I would only suggest making it format a bit better, I hate scrolling horizontally on web pages.

Nice...

Though you'd swear to god no one noticed the GLOSSARY that's been available for almost 2 years now, sitting on the left side of the Neo-Geo website/menu-bar...

<a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/reviews/NeoGlossary/neoglossary.htm" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/reviews/NeoGlossary/neoglossary.htm</a>

Giving a freebie to the Newbies who don't think "hey, a Glossary might be helpful" is like some kind of cyber-handout/welfare to the underserving. (hey, I feel like a cyber-Republican :) ).

Of course, I'm just being grumpy at people's ignorance. But I accept that most people are idiots.

Anyway, when you finish your FAQ, I'll post a sticky-post with both links to your FAQ and my Neo-Glossary. They should play off each other well enough. I'll post-feature-close so it just sits there as a beacon as opposed to a live thread.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! I notice it looks bad in notepad, open it in wordpad, with font size 10, Courier New, with WordWrap on. Matt Semmel has offered to HTML-ize the final version for me. If anyone wants to proofread and point out mistakes or add stuff (more questions, forum hints/tips, phrases, etc), let me know, you will be credited. I was going to do a links section but there's already a good one right here (I didn't know 1/4 of them, I'd say).

First thing I did was read your wonderous Glossary when I joined, I've often directed newbies to it.

Wow, while this FAQ certainly covers all the bases for newbs, it makes this board seem all the more "notorious". If people thought this place was a minefield before, now they'll just think it's some kind of Fight Club.

Very good faq there Dan.

Too bad most of the new dumbasses won't even
bother to read and still post the stupid ass
questions over and over again.

Sonic1687 is hosting the newest public version of the FAQ here:
<a href="http://mywebpages.comcast.net/sonic1687/faq/faq.txt" target="_blank">http://mywebpages.comcast.net/sonic1687/faq/faq.txt</a>

Also, c.t.h was kind enough to host/code a QUICK HTML-ization of the first public FAQ (don't worry Matt, he left you work). The ASCII art/table got a bit messed up but you don't have to scroll a ton sideways. You can find it here:
<a href="http://home.everestkc.net/whiggins/noob.html" target="_blank">http://home.everestkc.net/whiggins/noob.html</a>

Thanks to everyone for the feedback! I think this will be done soon!

EDIT: tooshort, perhaps when a member joins, the forum can send them like an automated PM with the page bobak was talking about.

*doh* my bad. I was looking at the newb faq that I had printed out and didnt realize some of the text was cut off.... The part that says bigbear makes it for use with mvs carts. For some reason it doesnt wordwrap for me. The faq spells it out clearly no need for a revision.

Anyways I'd rather be flamed for asking a stupid question than pre-ordering some shockboxes from bigbear then finding out they didn't work with mvs carts and having to cancel :)

Now to place an order wink

This is pretty much ready to go, it's spellchecked and whatnot. Does anyone see anything they think should be changed, reworded, or added? This can be a question or dos and don'ts or catchphrase or vocabulary or anything really. Let me know!

I'm sure you coulda found this in Tech Support but that's OK, I'll give you a quick rundown here. The JAMMA standard means any JAMMA arcade mobo can be run on a cabinet wired for JAMMA without much (if any) modification. Sort of like how any Gameboy cartridge will run on a gameboy system because the system is made to run games that have the Gameboy standard. You don't need to hack your gameboy around to run Super Mario Land differently than Tetris, likewise you don't need to hack a JAMMA cabinet around to run Final Fight differently than Gradius, the JAMMA standard makes the cabinet plug and play with any JAMMA mobo like the Gameboy standard makes the gameboy plug and play with any Gameboy game. There are exceptions though; some games are vertical and unless your cabinet it made to have a rotating monitor your image will be sideways; some games have extra buttons (like Street Fighter 2) and require an auxilary connector to use the extra buttons; some games have stereo sound (like the MVS) and you will need to rewire your harness to play most other motherboards (as they are mono), etc (there are many other exceptions, such as lightgun games which need lightguns to be used correctly, and driving games which need to have wheels, pedals, gearshifts, etc wired to the mobo through an auxilary connector). In short any game wired for JAMMA will run right away in a cabinet wired for JAMMA except for games which need extra stuff connected to run entirely (you CAN run Street Fighter 2 on a 3-button JAMMA cabinet but c'mon you can't play it without kicks!).

This will depend on what they are actually selling.

Jamma is an arcade standard for a wiring interface to a arcade cab (or supergun). Its a 56 pin edge connector that has things like Power (+5 volts, -5 volts, +12 volts and ground), generally mono audio, RGB video, Controls with 3 fire buttons and stuff like start, coin counters and such.

It allows someone to swap a board out of a cab and put in another one with out requiring a new wiring interface. Though on some boards they will come with extra hanress's for the kick buttons (since Jamma is 3 button standard and the SF2 type games use 6).

So, if this person is selling a Jamma PCB, they are probably selling an entire arcade board.

Now, if they mention also MVS, they probably are talking about a MVS board ( like a 1 slot, 2 , 4 or 6 slot). MVS wiring is fairly close to Jamma, adding an additional button (D) per player and differs somewhat in the audio and test buttons (depending on board).

Looking in the auction, if its a MVS game then yes, it can be used on a Phantom 1 providing the carts not a bootleg.

Have any specific examples?
