Can some of you guys with PS2's, Xbox's or gamecubes compare them to the Neo Geo? What do you guys like about the next gen stuff? What do you dislike? I stopped consoleing after PS1 & DC, thinking most of the stuff on these next gen systems were gonna be re-treads and am probably going to wait for the next system rollouts. Instead opting for some firstperson PC action. Was this wise? Am I missing any must-play games on the current consoles?

I really enjoyed the Neo Geo way back when. Although there were alot of crappy games and took 2 long to come out, some of them like SS1 will always rank among my greatest of all time. I still remember driving about 2 hours to buy King of the Monsters AES new, and buying the Neo Gold new. And the excitement of waiting for the home release of SS1.

I'm kinda afraid of a letdown as mebbe my nostalgia is building up the Neo being better than it is..Thats what my friends are telling me: that after a couple hours I'll be bored with it..I sure hope not wink

Do you guys think there will ever be another home entertainment console to cater exclusively to hardcore gamers like the Neo did?

I've got all the next gen systems and there are some good games on them. The Neo Geo and the group at snk/playmore have made videogames an art form. No current fighting game can recreate the magic and excitment that The Garou, Samurai Spirits and KOF series have created. The Tekkens, Soul Caliburs, Guilty Gears out there try so hard but all they make up for graphically is lost in gameplay and depth and boring characters. Graphically the Neo Geo is not the greatest in the world but it will suck you into a world of gaming that you may never come out of. Its not a system that you get easily bored with. People spend hundreds of dollars on games that should be a sign of how great they are. I think playing the Neo Geo will allow you to appreciate gaming much more than the xbox, gamecube or ps2 ever could.

Neo Geo may not fare well against other systems graphically, but Neo Geo delivers some of the games that have the best replay value. Non-Neo Geo gamers may think different however.

YOu sound like the drama-fags at McMaster U! Umm, well, I dont know about your comments on SC2...I love that game. It makes me feel special that I can take down button mashers in a 3D environment, sans problemo.

BUt, if I had to pick between SC2 and a...really good 2D Neo Fighter, Id pick the neo. It's just even more satisfying when you can take out an asshole trying to button mash in these things.

Anyways, did you get my email? I had to cancel because of werk. I need to pay tuision, what can I do. When you free next, fag-bot?

Next Gen consoles are visually better, but they all have slight loading times. At one point in time it wasn't a possibility in my mind that a newer system could be so much worse than an older one. The problem is that now most the companies seem way to concerned with making a game with impressive visuals, not gameplay. I remember back in the day when I could go to a game store and not be disapointed with the selection. Go scroll down the MasterList here at NG.com, I don't see a list of disapointing games myself. Now go walk into your local game store and tell me how many more disapointments you count compared to the masterlist. 2-D cncentrates on gameplay, 3-D concentrates on....3-D.

Yea. Now be wiser and get a neo with the extra cash.

Am I missing any must-play games on the current consoles?
Not really. Maybe a couple. But not much.

Do you like 2D fighters?

Well, this is untrue. Regardless of Generation, there has always been a huge selection of shit, and little true quality.

Neo is the same, really, when I consider my tastes. When you work it out in terms of percentages, 32X has the same percentage of quality software the, ooh, let's say the SNES did.

Games makers have always been obsessed with awesome graphics. They sell.

Something went wrong for me, where I saw some awesome new graphics (the Neo) and I fucking fell in love with them. I don't want them to change it.

Of course, I like to see games like SC2/Shenmue/Virtua Fighter 4 Arcade) that are graphically impressive in modern ways as well.

See, just because I prefer 2D, it doesnt mean Ill juz my pants for all things 2D. MOst of it shit. When done right, its divine.

For 3D, a similar rule Applies. I prefer 2D, but I know when a 3D game looks good. Genuinely. BUt I know that most 3D games are 3D for the sake of being 3d and are ugly and shit.

I prefer 2D fighting games more than 3D. 2D fighting games have more strategy and more thinking is involved. 3D fighters, you can keep hitting buttons and you'll probably win.

The Next Gen systems are cool in their own right for providing a medium in which certain things just cannot be done in 2-D. Like I can't imagine playing a 2-D side scrolling version of MAX PAYNE... it would just be lame. But unless it's one of the stellar titles like teh MGS franchise (as much as Kojima pisses me off)... really the older systems like the NEO:GEO freckin' OWN the Next Gens no problem. Better game play overall... great artwork, and a sub culture that to this day thrives (as this web community is testament) without the "approval" of the collective majority who think ppl who spend $120 + for one game is stupid. While I no longer have my AES system and 32 games, I still support SNK/Playmore through "Ports" and older "Ports" of their games like AOF on teh Mega Drive etcetera, but am still as much a die-hard as I ever was for the NEO overall. Unlike the dickwad Johnny-Come-Latelys of the world who clamor over whatever over hyped spoon fed bullshit 3-D adventure is shoved in their face... I know that the real gaming adventure is on teh NEO and other systems like the Mega Drive, Super Famicom and PC-Engine DUO.

Though ALL systems have their shit list games... the really bad turds we want to forget about, and truthfully, if PLAYMORE continues to just focus on "Vs. Fighting" games and the occassional kiss off genre of a METAL SLUG game here and there, then even the NEO will be doomed soon, but live on as a sub culture none the less. While the hardware might be old, there's all kinds of shit that it (the NEO:GEO) could pull off, if the ppl at PLAYMORE would really tap it's full potential. I mean just look at the Mega Drive... a good deal of the SFX it pulled off wasn't supossed to be able to be done, but through ingenius programming some really outlandish games pushed the system past it's technical limits... as could the NEO showcase other genres that "Go Beyond What You Thought." --- Possibly a new slogan--- if they'd take the time to actually program games with a lot of dev time before releasing something. But it looks like it's going to merely be them cashing in on the "Vs. Fighting" games until the camel's back breaks, so what can you do? I personally would pick the NEO over the newer stuff, but then I'm a couple cans short of a six pack anyhow. loco

As someone in here used to say: "The Neo Generation... we are few, but we are the best!"

Depends on the kind of games you want to play.

First and foremost I play my Neo for the 2D fighting games.

Next, the PS2 for Biohazard/ Devil May Cry/ Tomb Raider etc.

DC for the huge library of Capcom games.

I have all the next gen systems and I play my Gamecube for Soul Calibur 2 and my xbox for CapcomvsSnk2 online. Don't really play my ps2 much because most of the time i'm playing my neo. I guess i'm just a die hard 2-d fighter fan and the neo is the best when it comes to 2d fighters.

I'll limit this post to Fighting games in general, and my personal struggle transitioning from 2D fighting to 3D fighting. Before going into that however, I would like to agree with Rade's view on the Next Gen system in terms of visual appearance. 2D when done right, is simply breathtaking. 3D as well. When they are both done wrong, they are truly horrid to look it.

My personal battle from entering the 3D Fighting genre was that there was another axis to consider strategically. As opposed to the X and Y axis of a 2D fighter, there was the Z axis to also consider in the realm of 3D fighthing. This, for reasons beyond me, simply didn't register in my brain while starting to play the first 3D fighters at the arcades. I lost quite a many matches simply because I didn't know how to "side-step" when either in a defensive or offensive position.

I will say that one of the best 2D fighters I have played on a Next Gen system is Guilty Gear XX reload on PS2. The game is visually remarkable and in my mind, does have in-depth characters and strategic/flexible game-play.

Have to admit some thoughts entered my my mind after I ordered the Neo Geo like: "crap ya know I could have bought an x-box, gamecube and a PS2 for the same amount of money..."

But I must own SS1 again!!! Nam75!! Viewpoint!! My Precioussssssessss...

I was really suprised to find out there are games still being produced for the Neo Geo, I think that is what originally rekindled my interest...I thought the Neo died out a long time ago. Equally suprising is finding this great Neo Community here. If this was around when I had my old Neo, I'd probably still have it :) The worst thing I found with the Neo was after awhile I had no one to play against, and playing against the cpu got old fast. Are there any Neo Geo gamers in SoCal?

I've damn near lost all intrest in the next gen stuff with the exception of what SEGA, Namco, Nintendo, and Capcom( I haven't seen eye to eye with them for a while though ) will put out.

Some things just can't be done in 3-D and vice versa( MD said it, games like Dead To Rights and Max Payne would have sucked ass ) while I prefer my fighters 2-D with a few exceptions being the VF and Tekken series.

Hell I've pissed my game buying budget to the four-winds in favor of getting a couple SEGA CD, genesis, and Saturn games as well as a game gear system complete with a bunch of extras.

The day that happenes is the day I actually say something good about both MGS2 & Hideo Kojima, and xToo-Short20x actually says ports are superior

NEO·GEO is not just an ordinary game system, NEO·GEO is thee system. It deserves a special category because it's never been a mainstream system.
You read like your from the golden age of gaming(Gen/SN era). YOU DID THE RIGHT THING!! If price is your big concern, resell the NEW unit and purchase a used one.. I'm sure somebody here would tak ethat new unit off of your hands.
You have options.

The biggest problem with today's games is that they have no soul. Its all about the $$$$ and whoever makes a revolutionary game that doesn't sell like Enter The Matrix might as well lock up the doors and throw away the key.

Granted, yes, there are still good games out there, but even if they are fun and exciting, they'll still manage to make you lose interest sooner or later.

I'll take my NEO any day of the week over anything else out there.

I'll run this down for you the way things are, nostalgia and love for the 16-bit era aside.

The reason you own a Neo today is to play good playing but bad looking 2D fighters. Now before the flames start, when I say bad looking I mean by what mainstream gamers would call "good looking".

Compare GGX2 or SF3 to say KOF98 (or SFA3) and just about anyone who isn't in love with Neo-Geo games will tell you one of the mainstream games look better. Of course if you like 16bit graphics then KOF98 will look awesome to you and you'd be able to enjoy it at that level.

But mainly the reason to own a Neo-Geo right now is because a good number of the games on the system are some of the best arcade style games you'd ever come across gameplay wise.

It has what are some of the best fighters ever produced in its library, and it also is home to some great other 16bit gems like the Magical Drop puzzle games or the Metal Slug shooter/platformer games.

What you won't find on the Neo-Geo are the games that are offered by next gen consoles: RPG's, games with an extraordinary amount of plot, cinematic action/adventure games, FPS games (if anyone tries to compare The Super Spy to a modern FPS I will kill you), RTS games, extraordinary racing games, etc.

The Neo's strong suite of games are mainly the types of games that aren't inherantly better in 3D. Stuff like fighting games and puzzle games. Shooters also kind of apply because while next gen type shooters like Contra Shattered Soldier, R-Type, and Ikaruga may look nicer in 3D, if you notice the gameplay is still routed in 2D. So if you're not a graphics whore you'll get just as much enjoyment by playing Neo gems like Metal Slug and Blazing Star.

Conversely if you want a serious Soccer game then the latest Winning 11 or Fifa Soccer on PS2 is going to be a lot more satisfying than the Neo World Cup 98, etc. It's really all about what you like to play and to be honest you really need all the systems to get the most variety for all the games you'd like to play.

And yes, there are TONS of excellent titles spread accross all the Next-Gen systems that are worth owning and playing, you'd be dilluding yourself if you thought otherwise.

I'd trade this degree for somewhere to setup my home system, and a bottle of sake.
