Magical Drop II without a doubt. Pulstar is a very pretty game, with cool tunes, enemies and explosions, the whole nine yards. But it is harder than anything you've probably ever played before too. I love shooters to death, and a challenge is always welcome, but Pulstar is more memorization than anything else. Too strict, not enough room for experimentation or, God forbid, error. That's right, you lose them power-ups later in the game and you can kiss any further progress good bye.

Magical Drop II on the other hand is total addiction. Fun as can be, cool characters, dead-on gameplay, great soundtrack, I'm hard-pressed to think of too many negative things to say about it. That, and it's got serious points going for it when it comes to replay and tournaments with your friends. Get it man, you'll love it.

But then again, you could always get one of the cheap magical drop ports if you just want to play it *gasp* and get the pulstar homecart/mvs also...

Just a thought.

Between those 2... Magical Drop 2. I have MD3 and Pulstar on the MVS and I play MD3 way more as it is a fun and addictive game. Pulstar is a beautiful shooter where the challenge reaches dedication level and beyond. If you want a shooter that will kick your ass, that's Pulstar.

MD2 and Blazing Star would be a tougher choice... probably still MD2 though.

Magical Drop 2.

I never really played it much as I owned Magical Drop III at the same time, but there's a thing called "Panic Mode" that's very fun in 1 player.

If you don't MD3, get that over MD2. Either MD over Pulstar though.

I strongly suggest purchasing MD2 on the Neo Geo CD or Saturn. The soundtrack is arranged, but it it is not one of those arranged jobs with cheesy guitar licks and the like. Basically they just enhanced the MVS sound. The music on the home cart is a little "tinny" and is really difficult to listen to IMO.

So I would go with Pulstar and and spend a little extra on a cheap MD 2 port.

I have MD3 and Pulstar MVS carts, but I'd be hard pressed to choose between them as I love them both. If I *had* to though, I'd probably say go with one of the MD games really, as Pulstar is a game that I can only play when I am REALLY in the mood, otherwise I get killed easily on the first few stages because I'm not concentrating, and I end up getting really annoyed with it... which in turn makes me play even worse. By the end of an hour long playing session I end up ready to throw my joystick out the window, which is not a good thing :)

Magical Drop is also GREAT fun in 2 player, so if you have a 2nd player around that is always good. So yeah, go for MD2 or MD3 :) Are you going to be buying the home cart or MVS cart though? If you have the ability to switch regions (if you have a debug bios or uni-bios etc), I'd strongly suggest playing it in Japanese mode as there are a lot of things like voices etc missing in English mode. I'm not certain that MD2 is like that as I don't have the cart here at the moment, but MD3 is very different for sure - even if you can't read Japanese you are still better off in that mode imho.

Thanks, I never knew that -- I'll boot it in Japanese next time. :)

I have the Magical Drop II Neo CD, and my system defaults it to English. I think it's safe to say the same things are missing, because through the closing credits, you'll see a voice cast with several people, whereas in the English version all you hear are is the same voice for everything.

I agree with playing it in Japanese if you can. I have Magical Drop III on MVS, and hearing all the characters' voices really add's a lot to it.
