Baseball Stars Professional Pitching Instructions?

Just a quick question about Baseball Stars Professional. How do you control what kind of pitch you're throwing or the kind of hit you're attempting. Is it random or does it involve pushing in a direction when you hit the button? My cart didn't come with instructions...
