I'd like to hear from everyone in the community about this...collectors and casual home cart collectors as well. MVS owners need not apply...nothing personal.

I've got OCD about certain things...and unless certain things are kept at a certain level of cleanliness, I start to slowly lose my mind.

Recently...old style AES cases have been driving me crazy. They're filthy...even NM-Mint...they're dirty looking, and usually show signs of wrinkling or broken trays, etc.

So what do you think of slowly replacing all of my Old-Style AES cases with NEW style cases?

I know they're expensive...but so is the NeoGeo hobby. I also know they're not that common...but I see them for sale often enough.

Would this be a CRIME against the AES?

To me, its mutilation, though I know where you are coming from with both the general sentiment and the specific example.

yes, it's a crime.

Everything to the canon.

official packaging all the time, keeps everything perfect. Homecarts in homecart cases - MVS carts in brown boxes, and not in homecart shells.

OCD people would not have it any other way.

Really?
They're different size?
I've never noticed it or tried it so I wouldn't know.

And CHARLIE:

You're totally wrong about that OCD thing. I want to ditch all my DVD cases and replace them with the milky white/translucent cases...and ditch all my CDs artwork, etc and replace them with uniform, new CD cases. I don't care about the originality of the item...just how uniform it looks.

Seems that someone is trying to be a perfectionist. My motto if it dosen't need to be fixed, then don't fix it. I don't care whether it has the case or not, longs if the game works, then I'm cool. I don't take jurassic messaures to keep the cases clean or the booklets clean. If the game comes with a book or case, then it's alright, but, it dosen't that's cool too. If you have a case and booklet in very good condition, and the game dosen't work, then what good is the case and booklet then for a game that don't work. So, I wouldn't worry about it. I have old-style cases that the sides are coming off, but, longs if they hold the game, I don't give a fuck.

Old style games belong in oldstyle cases. they seem older that way.

As EvilMike pointed out, the inserts from old-style cases are larger than those from new-style ones, so replacing them isn't really an option. IMO the only viable option would be to buy a load of Shock cases from Big Bear and switch them all over, as those cases are new and look great (although the space for the insert is much larger, and inserts don't always stay in place in them).

I see then. I just hate the idea with homecarts because I see the value in the box and shitty paper inserts more than I would for CDs and DVDs.

To dump it all and put your stuff in anonymous milky clear boxes would be great if you were Patrick Bateman living in a brushed metal, stainless steel apartment, with a Bosch'd out kitchen, hardwood and marble floors...

I thought about this once, but then I though
how anal I am about originality, so I prefer
everything to stay the way SNK wanted it to be.
Just my opinion though.

I am in the process of designing a new style Snaplock case.

There will be an AES version and an MVS version. they will be HARDSHELL...

but I am not sure if I will ever produce them.

I have many people interested... and the design will fit both the Smaller and larger inserts.

but I am not releasing much information on them... because I believe the are 100% perfect for either AES or MVS games.

I know this is going out on a limb..... but people might actually prefer them to SNK's snaplock cases.. and in fact.... The snaplock cases could just be replaced and stored for future use or when ou decide to sell the game... so the original value is not shot.

Fuck no. I barely like handling them as it is. I definitely don't want to mess with any insert.

They are like books, you would be a fool to send all your books off to be rebound with the same material. Books are great because they look wonderful on a shelf and can be enthralling to read - despite the fact they all look different. The same is true of home carts, they are packaged differently, with different visual themes but put a bunch of them together and they all work to make a beautiful scene on a shelf. Also, you can play them.

If you find it unbearable to look at them, put them in a cupboard.

Me, being a collector, orginality along with condition is ideal. You say the old style cases look like arse even if they are NM, which I can understand. In terms of a collector's mindset, everything has to be original. Whether it looks like ass in NM+ condition or not is based on one's personal aesthetic preference. Just the way I feel personally.

Keep it original. I really like those old style cases...it's vinyl man!! The only drawback to those are the plastic tray inserts. Otherwise I like the feel, the look and the SMELL of the original vinyl cases and I would frown upon recieving an old school game in a new hard case.

honestly i would not buy any game from a vendor
that modified it in a way that it was no longer
how it originally was. even if it was an improvement.
ie new improved mvs labels.
but that's not to say that you cant do it.
its your games.
do whatever you want with them.
if your going to spend however much you originally
spent for it, and then more...
have a ball.

Do not do it. It will drive you insane in the long run.

I tried to buy Japanese Saturn games so I can have the cool covers and put in my US games. It drove me insane.

Now I realized if it was not released that way it ws not meant to be. Now I have Japanese and US Saturn games separate from each other.

Curse the US Guardian Heroes cover.

I don't mind the vinyl cases too much, the plastic trays are a load of shit, but overall, you can't beat the nostalgia of them, let alone that one of a kind odor they give off. As cool as it would look to have all the AES carts in snap cases, it's definately not worth the hassle trying to switch the old style to the new style. The cost to do that would be ridiculous, not to mention that if you did swap the cases, considering what game you are talking about, the case would be worth more than the cart. I say leave them as they were origianlly made. wink

It's all about smell!
Old cases give old neogeo games a special smell that differences them from any other games you may have in your collection! It's a feeling...
Yeah, plastic trays suck and break very easily, but since they are in the inside, as long as they can hold the cartridge well, that doesn't affect the aesthetic look of the games in your shelf.

If you are worried about old looking old style cases just buy a bunch of new Samurai Spirits 2 games and swap the cases.

I've thought about doing the same thing myself, mainly because my SS1 and SS2 cases are falling apart, and the plastic trays that hold them in place are badly cracked and practically useless.

So now I'm considering getting some Shockboxes like Chimp suggested (or possibly some of Bluevoodu's new cases?) and storing my games in them. I'd keep the original cases anyway, broken as they are, just because... well just because they're SNK/Neo-Geo goods.

A few years ago I threw away all of my NGPC Clamshell cases, and I really really regret that decision to this day!
