It's the clash of the Neo Geo heavy weight fighting games, which one do you think was the most influential and did the most for the neo.

KOF is a great series, but in my eyes it can't touch the perfection that is SS2.

I personally enjoy the more "traditional" feeling gameplay in KoF than SS proximity/high damage style gameplay.

(and there is no K' in SS) :)

KoF is probably my fav video game series of all time. And it has done alot for SNK and the new companies, but Samurai Shodown is and always will be SNK's first hit. I remember back in the day Fatal Fury made an impact, but I didn't learn of SNK/Neo Geo until Samsho came in and ruled the local arcades for awhile.
They really need to make a new Samsho.

I look at it this way, every KOF plays pretty much exactly the same like Street Fighter 2-SFF2 while each SS plays different enough to warrant the purchase of the whole series.

i'ld have thought Fatal Fury & KOF would be the two main neo fighters, i knew about FF way before i'ld heard of wither KOF or SS. Out of the two though i'ld have to say KOF.

This is such a pointless thing to debate. Two different style fighters. You want to compare 2 series?

Try The Last Blade.

Gekka no Kenshi absolutely blows Samurai Shodown away every way possible IMO. Plays better, looks better, better characters, better music, etc.

Well ya, you can't really compare. SamSho2 is one of the most balanced fighters ever though, something Last Blade didn't have. However, the Last Blade games are works of art.

I agree with that.

Some of the best style/atmosphere in a fighter ever.

ss2 did a lot for the system, and i'm sure if ss2 had as many sequals and time put into it, it would win over KOF. i like em bof so don't axe me to chooz

I think KOF fortified the style of game, but SS brought so much more to it....Like Humor, and freakz..AND SWORDSMANSHIP

Well, i think if you want to compare the two titles, have Haohmaru take Kyo in Cap. Vs. SNK 2, since this is the only game, not including Match of the Millennium, where these two fighters can duke it out. I personally don't think Kyo has anything on Haohmaru, especially when it comes to hair styles.

Every single SNK series plays differently from each other, unlike most capcom games (i am not dissing them for this because it seems to work for them) where you can take the same basic idea and use it another capcom 2D fighter. When me and some friends get together for a neo fest it takes a few matches to get into the VERY differnt styles of play. try playing a KOF game for an hour then switching to Last Blade or a Real Bout game. I prefer the KOF series over any other fighter, but to compaire the 2, there is no way.

SS2... well-balanced? That's a mighty ironic statement to make about a game with such bad character balance that several lengthy and well-thought out essays have been written about just how overpowered Ukyo was. (Click on the "Ukyo" character FAQ.)

I remember that SS2 was the first fighting game about which I ever heard the term "overpowered." As opposed to LB1, a game in which any character truly stands a very solid chance against any other (as long as you're not using bosses).

I laugh. Hah. Hah.

Untrue.

Read the TAPFAQ to see the old gamest character rankings. Although My haohmaru can probably still beat out a skilled charlotte player, you gotta admit that any scrub who uses Nicotine or Gen-an has almost a 50-50 chance of beating a grandmaster player with their stupid infinites - and the infinites in SS2 are crazy compared to 3 because you can seriously start them from a turtle crouch - at least SS3 demands you to be a little aggressive.

As for more influential, really I would have to say that KoF 98 was the most influential on these neuvo-fans. I mean, it was the r0m to DL back when emulation was in its prime.

But for those of us who were real old schoolers, It would either be SS1 or FFS. SS1 was actually a bit unbalanced too if you knew how to use Jubei, but for most people any character could stand a chance.

Your link doesn't work Dueuce :( . Ukyo was just as strong in part 1. Yes, I was incorrect, Samsho 3 was better in the balance department. Certainly there was no irony in my statement, Alanis!!

Whoops. I keep forgetting that GameFAQs doesn't allow direct links. Try it now.

What Ukyo had going for him in SS1 was a little different from SS2 - SS2 had him as this versatile behemoth, that could either win defensively or offensively.

SS1 did not offer an Ukyo that oculd pressure opponents like SS2 did witht he AfterImage attack.

See, one of my biggest grips in SSIV is what they did to characters like Ukyo and Gaira - complete rape. The musouzankouka became the poopoozankouka with Ukyo only laying 1 cut after all that running around. Ah - remembering how violent it looked in 3....

And then the voices - Genj wasn't quite as loud as he was in SS2, but the things he said and his voice were just cool. That "shini sarase" still makes my hair stand on end.

I mean, they made Amakusa "playable" to people people who couldn't deal with his unorthodox style in SS3 - all they need to change on Amakusa what his damn kick move. In SSIV his recieved the yo-yo from hell and mad hang-time. What a waste really. He was one of the more interesting characters in SS3 for whom a skilled user would get a lot of respect.

Did you enter any SS tournaments Evil? I don't think there's ever been any kind of SNK tournament In Canada. When SS1 and 2 came out everybody was playing it here. Most matches were Haohmaru vs. Charlotte, Haomaru vs. Ukyo, Haohmaru vs. Haohmaru!!! Very scrubbish stuff.

I'm not talking about that whole "who would win in a fight" thing. I mean which series do you like better.

They both have good strong points, I mean the KOF series(the earlier yearz) has alot more of a variety, but the SS series does have the humor and had better animtions than KOF did at the time of ss1...but that's just my opinion..
