riding hero came out in 1990/91. I think it wasntbad for its time.
It would have been great to see what the neo programmers could have done with a driving game in 1995-2000, instead all we got was "spy hunter" like perspective games eg the dire drift out and thrash rally, and the stakes winner series.

I admit Ive never played overtop, but its interesting to think what a real driving game on the neo could have been like.

Look at Cyberlip in 1990 and than look at Slug 3 and you see the improvement in that genre.

So I think SNK could really have improved on riding hero .

Ack!!

Dire??

Neo Driftout is bloody awesome, and Thrash rally ain't that bad neither!!

Overtop... well, yeah, that is crap...

I think the predominant reason we never saw any more racing games is that by-and-large they require dedicated cabs.
People don't want to play racing games using a stand-up cab with a joystick in the arcade.

You need to put a lot of development into a dedicated racing cab too, to ensure you get a good return. Look at the all money SNK lost on developing Round Trip RV using the Hyper 64.

If the Neo CD was still a commercially viable platform, then it probably woundn't be too unrealistic to expect a decent 2D racer (CD only). But for MVS and homecart it just wouldn't be worth SNK's while.

To make it a success they'd either need some dodgy steering wheel add on for the cabs, or a dedicated cab (high dev. cost and high operator costs for the arcade).

I'm afraid the Neo•Geo will never be remembered for it's choice of high quality racing games...

BTW - Stakes Winner games are awesome too :D

Fluff_Daddy:
Is it possible to make space harrier style games on the neo?
Not with THAT amount of sprite-scaling... spock

...though,if the Genesis could have a decent version of OUTRUN,i'd love to see what someone could have done with the NEO...

..damm,we'll have to live with Riding Hero... frown

Trash rally was a very good game. you can use cars, trucks and motos and you have two different kinds of races. But the racing games need a steering wheel and a sit down cab....
Neo drift out was fucking great too. just sad that is was MVS only and with only three cars.
But to speak about the racing genre, I think that the neo was not made for that, they produced pretty good games but ,at my opinion, racing games need 3D.
