Considering that you probably just like the new KoFs and Capcom vs. SNK, why bother with a neogeo? Just get the DC.

Both of them are excellent so you won't make a bad choice. Personally I have the two supports and I use them with the same pleasure ( with a preference for the neo... ).

Get them both. I love my Neo, but I couldn't imagine having to give up my Dreamcast. You can't go wrong with either system. Then, after you get 'em, get yourself a Turbo Duo too! :D

Where's Drifty and Fran when you need them? loco

BTW, you'll need a DC and a PS2 if you want to play all the rockin ports for the new KOF's, SNK vs. Capcom, and the Metal Slug games.

Just remember they ports are inferior to the original Neo versions, but on the upside they cost you $50-$60. I don't know how old you are or what your money situation is but that is the main thing you have to figure out here.

Owning a Neo-Geo and games is damn expensive, even MVS is a lot of cash compared to just buying DC or PS2 games. Thing is, if you got the cash its one of the best gaming experiences you can get, period.

If you don't thats fine, you can enjoy most of the best Neo games via ports to DC and now PS2 with minor differences that make them slightly inferior to the original versions.

Nah, its really more about how you define "inferior". Its actually a pretty bad word to describe it since it has such negative overtones to it, but I think it was chosen for that reason by some more "unscrupulous" members... :p

Best way to describe it is this way:

I have all the KOF's on MVS, and I have KOF2k and 2k1 (soon to have 2k2) on DC. Got stuck at a friends house for a night and they had a DC, luckily I had my KOF2k1 copy w/ me and we popped that in to play for what turned into 3 hours. I'll tell you this, sit there for a long time and play the DC version and things pop out at you that just "aren't right" compared to the cart version. Sounds, loads, lags, etc.

Kinda hard to describe but when we were playing I'd be like "thats not right" and it struck me as very wierd compared to the MVS version (which I've logged many hours into).

Now is it "inferior" I guess so, thats just a harsh way of saying "not as good as" the original version. Problem is this: you get about a 1% difference being not as good and you get a bunch of extras to compensate for that. You also get to pay $60 for it versus $150 or $275 for the Neo version (MVS/AES respectively) so its a much better value.

Thing is, the guy here is asking whether he should buy a Neo or a DC, and if you have to even ask that question you know the answer is DC since if you can afford to maintain a Neo setup then you probably already can easily afford a DC one as well, it does not go the other way around.

That said its not like its all that bad to be "stuck" w/ a DC setup you get most of the latest and best Neo games w/ extra features, and tons more with better graphics/sound/etc. It offers a much more diverse library than the Neo does actually if you want that sort of thing, but if you have that Neo "itch" then nothing but the original will really work for you.

If you're a bit of a neo/snk fan I highly recommend aes or mvs.

I guess dc is enough when you are new to consoles and like teh 3d games and load times shame

Let's have that discussion in another topic if you're hurt that much when someone else pronounces our mutual love with the 'wrong' letters :)

There's enough drama in the wrong forums already, people fight about the weirdest things these days.. frown

seriously though.
you need to look at it how SNK looks at it.
they make MVS NEOGEO games.
they make them for arcades first and foremost.
they also bring identical versions of it plus
little naunces like difficulty settings
and time settings to the NEOGEO cart system
which was originally a home version of the MVS.
over the years the NEOGEO is still expensive
but totally mirroring the mvs and is totally faithful to it.
(quite honestly for all intensive purposes the NEO cart system is an MVS.)
the expense and the sparse spread
of NEOGEO owners (compared to other systems ie ps sat DC)
are prohibitive to mass producing games
to the mainstream public
so it makes sense for SNK to release games
that are available to most everyone at a more
agreeable price.
ports are usually close to the originals in terms
of play but are full of stupid nuances like
very small load times. sometimes smaller sprites
with less animation. sometimes slowdown.
but alot of times (and mind you SNK rarely releases
games without improvements)
have things not in the original,
like arranged soundtracks (or as a wise man once said
how SNK intended it to sound.)
different backgounds.
different modes. and other neat things
like art galleries and sometime minigames.
so its a give and take.
not total perfection but very close.
and for quite alot cheaper.
i for one collect both.
i always like getting the NEO versions and the
ports. just something special about them sometimes
you know. so kinda just ask yourself what do you
want out of it.
the real arcade feel.
or whatever.

a DC is a more versatile machine and the games are much cheaper, but it doesn't have the same WOW factor as showing your mates carts that are bigger than the whole DC console and standard joysticks that fill a small coffee table

I don't see why it is a choice though, surely if you are considering buying an AES you should get a DC too as you could pick one up with some rocking games for the price of a single AES cart??

PS Since I got an AES my dreamcast has been relegated to single player light gun gaming and occasional boughts of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (there's no substitute for 120+ hit combos!!)

Man, us guy's is so helpfull.

All you need to do is pay attention to Jhendrix and Rarehero, as they make the point just fine that if you can afford a cart system then you probably allready have three DC up your ass from sitting on them by accident whilst trying to count the shit loads of cash you must be carying on your person because god knows it wont fit in the house.
