Review
The unit is basically plug and play.. I got it yesterday after striking a deal with the greathopper, it took a couple of weeks to make after i supplied the 4 slot. It was worth every penny, which is why I am writing this message up on the forums. I am not being payed and I havent been asked to do this, I am just so utterly satisfied with the end product I though I'd show it off to the NEO World!
Basically I already have a large MVS collection and have had many superguns in the past, I have kept NONE of them because they were either too fidely, they didn't work on my TV or were too damn big and ugly. This is the first which works on EVERY TV in my house, including the 24ins sony widescreen which has such a sensitive RGB signal it wont run a PS2 or Saturn through an RGB cable in the right colours. While I had to adjust the RGB settings it now works beautifully and gives a far nicer image than my AES does..
The unit itself has been very precisely made, with the cutting in the metal looking similar to factory production and the chrome finish is absolutely flawless. In fact I had the option not to opt for the chrome finsh which would have saved me 60-70 UK pounds, I am glad I went ahead with it. The finish is there for good as the original casing was stripped down and polished to a chrome finish, so its not going to scratch off like the Black spray painted consolised 2 slot I owned. In fact the photo of the Silver Shadow IV doesnt do it justice, wait until you see it in the flesh..
The PSU supplied is very small and neat, similar to a laptop style PSU and while it gets hot I have left it on for 5-6 hours and cant see there being a problem leaving it on for longer. These 4 slots were made for continuous 24-hr use and i am sure the PSU was too. The great thing about the PSU is, like a laptop PSU you can use it internationally as it supports 100-220v and 50-50hz.
Now down to how the Unit works; it really is simple to operate, you load at least 1 MVS game in, connect the scart to scart lead to both the TV and the Silver Shadow, plug the PSU in and finally a Neo Geo controller. Away we go, we are presented with UNI Bios Splash Screen for a second and then onto the games. Instantly I noticed the Picture quality to be superior to my AES (which is also using an RGB Scart lead), maybe this is down to the Gold Plated Scart to Scart or the 4 slot itself. Again I am not sure why but the colours and sharpness of the image is definitely better than my AES.
The Audio is in Stereo so sounds meatier and more dramatic than the Standard AES, not that big a difference but it sounds really good and there is less distortion than on my AES at higher volume. The volume is adjustable on board, and is limited so it doesnt blow your TV AMP/Speakers. You can happily leave it on FULL the whole time, as this is just marginally louder than the output of an AES console.
The system uses standard Controller devices and has been compatable with all those I own. Being a NEO Pad, NEO Stick (NEW style), NEO Stick (classic) and the HORI Fighting Stick. The system really plays just like an AES, except by holding Start and Select in game you enter a menu in which you can choose from many options. (Check Screen Shot) You can even reboot the games, which I think is a smart feature so u dont have to physically get off the seat
. Also the fact that it is a 4slot means that before you actually press start in game you can select which of the 4 games you would like to play by pressing the Select button on the controller. There is also a general menu for the UNI bios before you start the game allowing you to choose AES/MVS mode and USA/Europe/Japan as well as a programmer debug feature, Cart ROM check and Jukebox so you can listen to all the music files from the games and even record them. For more features on the UNI Bios 1.1 which the Silver Shadow IV (Mk.2) uses check more details http://bios.cps2shock.com.
I did find 2 features of the Silver Shadow IV to be negative, firstly lack of ON/OFF switch which is slightly impracticle, but you get used to unplugging the PSU or switching it off from the mains. The second feature is the lack of Memory Card support, although I dont use the Memory Card much on the AES, it was a nice feature which the 4 slot doesnt have. However I think the fact that this system keeps your High Scores for the last 8 games used to outweigh the fact that there is no Memory Card support. As I am sure you know there is nothing better than having people attempt to beat your High Score on NEO GEO games, especially on the Metal Slug Series.
To sum the review up:
Design/Quality = 10/10 beatifully constructed, very professional feel to it.
Functionality = 9/10 better than an AES, the lack of an On/Off switch brings this down.
Looks = 10/10 without a doubt the best looking MVS@home system I have seen. Your friends will lust over this!
Compatability = 9/10 compatable in all regions, with nearly any Scart TV and uses all your old NEO GEO controllers!
Price = 8/10 at around 300 pounds this isn't cheap but worth every penny, think how much you will save on all those AES games!
Overall 10/10 = The NEO GENERATION of MVS@Home systems has arrived, this has taken prestige gaming to a new level.
